July 10 -

We've done a lot of work on the Category List for the Decade Awards and gotten some excellent suggestions in the last few weeks. Based on all that, these will be the competition categories:

Spoiler :
Terraforming Award: Best Terrain Set
Best Graphics: LM or Overlay Terrain
Best City Graphic
Best Splash Graphics
Best Map
Interface Graphic Award
Best Leaderhead
Scholar's Award: Best Tutorial
Best Utility

Best Historic Mod/Scenario
Best Historic Unit: Ancient/Renaissance
Best Historic Unit: Industrial/Modern

Best Fantasy Mod/Scenario
Best Fantasy Unit

Best Sci-Fi Mod/Scenario
Best Sci-Fi Unit

Unusual Unit Award

Best Converted Unit
Best Multiple Unit
Best Themed Unit Collection

Best Collaboration

Best Overall Mod Decade Award
Best Graphic Decade Award
Best Unit Decade Award
Jury Award(s)
Pioneer Award

And this is the Plan for the contest organization:

Spoiler :
The first thread to appear would be the First Nominations Thread (in July, by this schedule). The first page will have a portion of the category list on it: let's say the first 9 categories. The instructions will read: Each member may make One nomination in each category listed. One post per member, please. Nominations for these categories will close on the 25th of the month.

The Awards Thread moderator will be wise to keep a running total of posted nominations as they are made, and will close the nominations thread, as promised, on the 25th. He would then construct a Poll for each category, listing the 10 - 25 most nominated entries in each category. He will then construct a Second Nominations Thread for the next 7-9 categories in the same manner as he did for the first set, and post this and the new Polls in the subforum around the fifth of the month.

This will be repeated in Sept. and October, except that there won't be a nominations thread in October, as we will be voting on the last categories by then.

Okay, then, the floor is again open to comments..

Instead of ancient/industrial/modern units, I think it may be more interesting to use different approach

- Human units
- Animal / monsters
- Mechanical

for instance.

I think between a medieval soldier and a modern soldiers, animating is similar, while between a tank, a ship or a human it's quite different

I agree with these categories but i would take multi-units out; they are basically the same as the unit they repeat.
Multi-units have been made that incorporate several different untis. Multi-units have been made that include units unique to them. Even those constructed from single units require a different set of skills - including such things as getting the timings right of the various components.

How about a category for totally weird units? Kool-ade Man comes to mind.

Maybe if they include some unique unit they can be entered in the regular contest of that category. I just do not find it very fair to have a separate trophy for work which mostly is cut & paste, and i am very aware that i have never made a unit and therefore can only guess what that labor is about.

Anyway, there could even be a poll about it- i am sure most people want as many contests as possible so a multi-unit one will probably go through in the end.

Your antipathy to pixel by pixel creation is noted and will be given due consideration.

In the meantime perhaps you have some categories to suggest?

Another potential category - interfaces.

I propose full gfx packs. Many people just specialise in making ONLY cities or LHs or terrain features (be it resources, rivers, roads, whatever), but I think that making a full pack, even if individually its components are not tht good, well…

Oh! I forgot. Best tutorial/guide.

I think there should be more pcx categories there -
Wonders
Tech Icons
Interfaces

And maybe mods could be split up?
Epic mods
Specific historical period mods
Fantasy mods
Obscure mods (I'm thinking things like The Playground Mod would fall into this one.)

And then possibly 'best overall mod' too.

Also (and I hope I'm not coming in with far too much and looking a fool here), what about categories for modders? As in like, biggest contributor or most influential or most valued or something? Or possible best pcx maker, best scenario makier, best unit maker, etc?

Now I feel I've said too much. Ah well.

It's an idea worth considering. It's also worth considering that it's one thing to have your creation voted down, it's another to be voted down yourself. Or even not be nominated. This is why, with the exception of birthday threads, we've tried to avoid personal threads throughout CFC.

I'm sure there will be some 'automatics' - Most downloaded mod, most downloaded graphics, most units made, etc. - that will kick in by the numbers and constitute sort of Decade Achievement Awards. We can work that out. Right now, we might keep the discussion to which major and sub- categories that the rest of us mere mortals can compete in. I'll update the OP Friday night to reflect your suggestions.

I'd like to suggest some interesting superlative categories ;)

Greatest Lost Treasure: no longer available because it was lost in the Great Hacking, hosted on an inactive site, or otherwise been lost. (hopefully a short list!)
Most Spectacular Failure: had great potential or interest but was never completed.
Most Inspirational: has produced the most derivatives, variations, or imitations.
Best Niche Creation: very well done but only applicable to a very specific purpose.
Most Revolutionary: noteworthy not necessarily for its own popularity, but for opening up a new direction for others to follow.
Most Saved Time: A utility, tutorial, or template that has saved the most effort by automating or simplifying a process.
Most Distinctive: universally recognized at a glance, and everyone knows who made it.
Best Prank: was made as a joke, and became unexpectedly popular
Most Technically Impressive: took the greatest skill and dedication to get right, even if it's not readily apparent (graphics, programming, or mod-making)
Best First: a particularly impressive creation for a first attempt
Most Tragically Overlooked: great work that for whatever reason just didn't catch on
Most Downloaded or Longest Thread per Graphic/Mod/Tool: More of an honorable mention, since it's an objective measure.

And a few personal achievements:

Polymath: for significant contribution to the community in multiple categories
Master Craftsman: for mastery of a particular category
Supporting Actor: valued not for what they create, but for what they post- whether it be encouragement, research, record-keeping, debugging, or technical knowledge
Founding Father: influential in the early days but no longer around
Powers That Be: For best contribution to the community in their role as a moderator (this could be a touchy one  )

The updates to the OP are only meant to keep it easy to see what has been suggested - keep up the brainstorming everyone.

The "personal achievements" categories suggested by WildWeazel are an interesting idea. Perhaps allowing more than one person to get the award. More of a "hall of fame" list than a contest.
