2012 Apocalypse Coming Up

In the spirit of 2012, here are a few excerpts from the Popul Vuh:

This is the beginning of the end and destruction of the world of Seven Macaw; brought by two boys. The first was named Hunahpú and the second was named Xbalanqué. As they were gods they saw the attempt of self-glorification and acquiring of true knowledge by Seven Macaw as evil, in the presence of the Heart of Heaven.

The boys saw this and talked "It isn't good what he does, when true man does not even exist yet"

And to those who think its a destruction of the world - (we didn't believe in that, but for the moment I'll indulge you) This is the passage describing the destruction of the previous species that dominated the earth and the previous cycle of the earth:
======

The Creator and Maker had tried to make man. Mans' flesh had been made from grain and corn. the flesh of women had been built from reeds unlike men. These men and women were incompetent and refused to talk to their Creator and the Maker. Due to this reason their creatures were slaughtered. A flood covered the Earth and ash rained from the sky. The Gouger of Faces ate their eyes, Sudden Bloodletter cut off their heads, Crunching Jaguar ate their flesh, and Tearing Crocodile tore and crumbled their bones apart.

This was a punishment for not having thought of their Creators even though they had the capacity to. Then the earth was turned a dark black from a constant black rain.

And last excerpt from the Popol Vuh to post - the play by play how the previous "destruction" occurred.

-----
The animals entered the houses and domains of these "men" and smashed their faces in. Then everything began to talk; their water jars, their tortilla skillets, their plates, their cooking pots, and grinding stones beat the remaining pulp of their faces.

"You caused us pain and you ate us. Now it is time for us to eat" said their turkeys. Then their grinding stones spoke, "We were tortured because of you. Every day you all ripped and rubbed food right in our faces, only to waste your food. At least that was when you were people, now we shall grind you and your flesh." Their dogs spoke next in turn, "Why did you never feed us? You barely looked at us but you always chased us away. You always kept a stick lying on the ground to hit us when you were eating. You didn't speak to us and treated us badly. Maybe we won't kill you now, but why didn't you look ahead - why didn't you change? Why didn't you think about what you were doing? Now we will kill you. And you will feel our teeth as we devour you." Then their tortilla skillets and pots spoke, "Pain! It is all you have done for us and the world Our mouths and faces were covered always in soot. You set us on fire and burnt the world constantly. We didn't feel any pain, so you try it now."

Then the stone in their houses shot at the creatures' heads. The men were desperate and ran as fast as they could. Some of them climbed to the roofs of their houses but their houses began to collapse. Others tried to climb into the trees but they were thrown from them. Some even tried to hide in the caves, but the caves swallowed them and their race.

This was the destruction of the wooden man. The mouths and faces of all of them had been destroyed and crushed. It is said that monkeys and lizards are their descendant, of the survivors, of the last attempt at man. That is why monkeys look similar to humans; they were the favorites of the gods.

Well, it's 12/21/2012 GMT and no big catastrophe has happened or Alduin the World Eater making an apperance :p.

Good good - I am going to my old high school tomorrow and going to wear a Poncho, shawl, and hat - carry my lucky Saints leaves and a poorly cut out sign with "the end is n3ar" written on it and beneath that:

"Oxi lajuj baktun pa xibalba che k'is"

I have always wanted to pretend to be that crazy old man you see in a movie with that sign. Now is my personal chance :D and hopefully will embarrass my sister a bit

If this is an attempt to cheer us up..... I think not.

Well I left out the part about the jaguars and some of the grosser parts.

The Popol Vuh is at least 3,000 years old though [They found a copy of it inscribed in stone hieroglyphs at El Mirador]. It is a fascinating holy book - makes any Norse saga look tame though

I wonder if even without an apocalypse, this will cause increased rioting and looting.

AdamCrock, please stop posting.

Apparently, the big 'end of the world event' is supposed to happen tomorrow at 11:11 GMT. In the rare case that it is the end of the world, I will grab a bowl of popcorn, my IPad, some cookies and try to find a plane ticket to China (you know, that place where the big boats are kept ;) ). If it doesn't end (which will likely be the case), I'll have a normal day (which will consist of really only going to Bowling practice since Mid-Terms ended today).

Oh it's OK. You can relax, I've heard it's been extended to the 24th now.

I must say it's a big relief to me. I was beginning to get worried. That was a close one! Phew!

Don't get too cozy; the prophecies came from the Americas, so it's likely this is all gonna go down on American time. In these eight minutes, we've had pretty typical Midwestern early winter conditions. It's been raining all day, and I think it's starting to snow. Our trash can even tipped over from the wind. Pretty terrifying stuff.

It would be from the time zone the Mayans were in, so Central Time zone i'd assume.. Of course nothing will actually happen but oh well.

Well, I don't know about you, but since it's past midnight in the Yucatan I'm guessing it probably isn't going to happen.
