Good on them. Who got the bronze?

Simone Biles margin of victory in gymnastic all around was more than the margins of all gold medalists from 1980 through 2012 combined. And it wasn't because the silver medalist was a slouch.

Canadian sportscasters got nothing on them. Canada loves to sportscast their curling and darts events. Ooh I'm riveted to the screen! He aims! He drinks a beer. He throws. Ooooh triple score!! That'll be highlight footage on the CBC tonight!
I've played darts, but not curling.

I'm one of the few Canadians around here who finds curling utterly boring. Mind you, it's slightly more interesting than pony chuckwagon races.

Japan are a developing or "tier 2" rugby country, meaning they are substantially weaker than the tier one countries. They memorably caused one of the greatest upsets in international sport history against South Africa in the most recent World Cup. They also play with widely admired spirit and style which is helpful.

The gulf between countries isn't quite as large in Sevens compared to the proper 15-a-side game. That is due to the shorter format, the lesser reliance on huge players and on brutal attrition, and the chaotic nature of the format (these characteristics also lend tier 2 Fiji help in their Sevens dominance). But it still would have been superb to see two smaller rugby countries take medals like how Canada medalled in the women's.

(Tier one countries are NZ, Australia, South Africa and Argentina in the Southern Hemisphere and England Ireland France Wales Scotland Italy in the north, both in descending historical strength order)

The chuckwagon races would be more interesting if they weren't fixed. Whoever gets Lane 1 wins. Lane 4 is at such a disadvantage that it's not even worth watching. But the Stampede show afterward is pretty amazing. :). It's in the same league with the Olympic opening ceremonies.

I've never actually been to the Stampede. I've been in Calgary during Stampede, but had other things to do.

They should try ladies' barrel wrestling. According to CTV anchor Lloyd Robertson, that was an event in the special rodeo put on in Calgary during the Olympics in 1988. Robertson never batted an eye over that announcement, btw. Neither did anyone else east of the Ontario-Manitoba border. As for me, I literally fell off my chair, laughing.

Turkish oil wrestling would be not a bad Olympic sport, with its gratuitous female appeal. Although as a Canadian sport, that would probably be a better fit at Rogers Center than at the Stampede.

I knew I saved this screenshot for a reason, and it only took the (first?) or second page to show me a reason for it.

While the rest of the world has always gone by Gold count, the US has always gone by total medals. We had this same discussion in 2012, 2008, etc. Whenever the US media has not gone by total medals and gone by gold medals, those media usually were lazy and just copied the official Olympic press releases instead of making their own tables.

This was early in the Olympics, showing the rankings by total medals, with China in the lead.

Lol Hope Solo. Attempts to psych out the kicker in the penalty shootout by changing gloves them after losing has big whinge calling the Swedes "cowards". What a winner.

Is it wrong that I was only interested in watching women's volleyball this Olympics? Specifically any match involving Australia's team?

Why would that be wrong?

I haven't watched much of the coverage this time - too much stuff going on. And I don't really find the prospect of watching the triathlon very appealing, considering the sewer the athletes have to swim in for that part of the event.

It appears that Canada is doing well in swimming, rowing, and trampoline.
