2020 US Election (Part One)

You are missing something, and it is revealed in the statement that Bernie hasn't strayed from the policies of the "new deal democrat." You've done canvassing. Certainly you have experienced this:

Canvasser: "Here's a policy the candidate is for <bog standard Democrat position>"
Person: "Wow, that sounds really great."

Repeat several times, going through the catalog of bog standard Democrat positions.

Canvasser: "So <bog standard Democrat> can count on your vote?"
Person: "Wait. What? Isn't he a Democrat? Hell no."

I've actually never experienced that at all, though that may have something to do with the specific voters we target in our political field operations.

I haveexperienced older people declaring they wouldn't vote for a candidate we were supporting for the Pennsylvania State Senate last year because she was campaigning as a socialist, who ended up winning the election by a bare handful of votes.

Bernie is too old; he should get out of the race and pass his support to....Yang!

I too favor giving an extra $1000 per tenant to landlords every month

Could be. Depends on your targeting criteria. It's surprising to me how much of targeted canvassing is directed into really just GOTV efforts, so you are mostly talking to people who are likely to vote for your candidate in the first place. It's obviously important, and certainly less discouraging for volunteers, but I always wanted to go head on into the fray. Living in a traditionally hard core GOP stronghold presents that opportunity, but TBH the democrats never really canvassed here until 2018. I'm hoping that the crash and burn of our first Democrat representative in decades doesn't set us back, but it's a hope with a touch of desperation in it.

Don't get lost in the weeds. What candidates say they want to do and what they end up doing if elected are usually very different. Elect a person, not a platform.

Elect a figurehead!

The President does't do anything.

Huh? What does this refer to?

Yeah, in case it was unclear, Yang as a person doesn't impress me.

Most studies show that politicians make full effort to fulfill about 2/3 of their campaign promises. That's not great but it's waaaaaaaaaay more than people think is true.
Any democrat will be an improvement over any Republican and 2/3 of a Democratic agenda agreed upon by Congress will be progress.

Oh I didn't realize she had resigned. That sucks.

edit: I'm doing some research and the sensation of agreeing with Matt Gaetz completely is...strange

Ewww. I could have done without the support from that particular source. I wonder what his game is?

I don't know but like...it seems like it should be pretty goddamn illegal for Hill's ex-husband to disseminate nude photos of her.

It is, but since it benefits the GOP charges are extremely unlikely. The local DA is deep in the pockets of a local mayor, and that mayor was posting them locally before they got picked up nationally.

Bernie's been upfront about being a socialist and he's not insulting anyone like Hilary.

Hell own it while other candidates like Warren are tiptoeing around it.

Bernie went on Fox and had good numbers vs Trump.

Yeah when I found out she'd resigned my reaction was... "What?! Why?!? Because affair/sex scandal?? So effing what???"

I don't get it. Since when is a bog-standard sex scandal alone enough to get a politician to resign? Aren't we way past that naïve brand of Puritanical idealization in politics at this point? And if not, why not?

Quick googling she was having affairs nude photos with another women and she had multiple erm affairs.

She was openly bisexual without the photos she could probably ride it out.

I had to Google it. She also violated some rules as her last friend was a junior staffer.

Well there are questions. One possibility is that there was rather more than a bog-standard sex scandal, and she resigned because she is afraid of what the Ethics investigation might reveal. But it still isn't really clear to me whether she resigned because of the threat of nude photos or because of the apparent improper relationship with a campaign staffer.

This is a knife edge district, and the weasel incumbent that she edged out last year has been campaigning ever since. Giving him this piece of "told you so" ammunition against her pretty well guaranteed a flip back next year, and even if she just didn't run her baggage would most likely sink any other Democrat trying to replace her. This creates at least some chance that she can get far enough out of sight and out of mind to hold the seat.

It should be noted that our last Democrat representation, at the state level, was run out of office when a female aid rumored to have been paid off by the GOP walked in on him in his office bathroom and then filed a sexual harassment complaint. This particular strategy is nothing new here.

A sex scandal was what got that Kennedy-esque third main candidate to drop out of the race (and apparently also drop out of the face of the earth, or at least politics) which then became a Hillary-Obama one. Of course the spin was to focus on him using campaign money to hush the scandal/similar, but I do doubt that is what the focal point was for most. Politics in America are mostly still puritan when compared to many other places (eg France).

With Boris in No 10 they are becoming positively Rabelasian over here.
