5 city conquest challenge

grs: You just put my reasoning into long, worded out form.

But yeah, mole, those were my thoughts. Literature looks like our best bet if we can't get a free government out of phil, and since other civ's have writing, we've got to hope we get Phil first - aka, no chance to get a gov's pre-reqs.

(Edit) Grs is up next, followed by me, right?

so gozpel, that's what you get, when I start to write more, you still want it

 No worries, you explain stuff so even I understand it. Don't stop!

Ok, we completely switched our roster somehow, so it should now be:

grs - up
hajime - on deck
gozpel
opac
t3h_m013 - just played

I got it and will play today. t3h_m013, could you please update the roster in the first post? It will be easier to see who's up then, thanks.

ok, will do that. and i accept your library logic... just ive never played a game without building temples in all my cities... :S do you need temples to build cathedrals?

Pre: Switch builds like told.

1475BC: Hamburg warrior - barracks.

1450BC: There is iron between Sumeria's and our lands. They will get it in their cultural borders, if Umma gets a cultural expandsion.

IBT: Sumeria starts to waste many shields on the ToA.

1425BC: Sumeria boots our warrior, Russia too.

IBT: England completes The Colossus.

1325BC: England and Spain know horseback now. Sumeria boots our warrior again.

1275BC: Isabella demands all our 3 gold, while we are running -1gpt. I have to decline. If I had given in we may have lost a building. She gives us war happyness.

1250BC: Philosophy will come in next turn. We should chose Literature for free and trade Philosophy around. We can switch the temple in Leipzig then to a Library in time. Try to make peace with Isabella in a trade if possible.

Edit: yes, I know, I have a habit of not giving in to demands, but she is far away, will give us some happyness and we probably will be able to peace her soon if we want to.

You will be shocked, but I don't consider cathedrals as that important too ;)

Edit: war happyness is the effect that - when another civ declares on you - the people in your empire unite against the opposing forces from outside and some content citizens becomes happy. Read this article about it and probably some others in the war academy too.

I agree with grs's stance on temple's, thought i find that there are some cases where they can be useful, but for most of the time they should not be built unless aiming for cultural victory.

Whats the status regarding the 5th city? We can try to conquer the horse town from Sumeria, or more likely raze and replace as their culture > ours probably. It is kind of hard to find other good spot for it that would not be too far away and lost to corruption.

We should not attack Sumeria. It is bad enough we are at war with spain. We could settle come coastal city in the back of our empire and relocate it later.

Im not advocating for an attack against Sumeria either, Its purpose was to be rather a long term plan suggestion. We need to have the thing decided one way or another however, whether we get temporary town somewhere is only one part of the question, and I feel that it should be cleared before next player plays so that he can plop a settler to our fith city spot whether its permanent or not

Turn 0: Did nothing.
Turn 1: Got Philosophy, got Lit for free.
Changed research to Map Making, left it at 10%.
Changed Temple at Leipzeig to Library
Hamburg finished Barracks - started Spearman
Turn 2: Sumeria gets pissy at Herman the German, threatens war if we don't move out - I choose to move out.
Workers finished work, moved them to the iron at Hamburg
Library finished at Leipzeig, building Barracks now
Turn 3:
Started workers roading Hamburg's iron.
Worker finishes irrigating plains near the capital - set him to chopping wood near Leipzeig.
Turn 4: Worker finished road near Konisberg, started mine on the grassland.
England demanded Philosophy - I took the risk and declined (Sorry!). They chickened out on declaring war on the almighty one! Bwahahaha :P
Offered Elizabeth 4 gpt + 45 gold + Philosophy in trade for Horseback Riding and Polytheism. England should not declare war on us now for at least 20 turns - they are being very aggressive towards us, so I would have rather spent gpt then gold in bank.
Found out Sumeria just finished Construction - however, I decided to wait untill at least one other civ had it. However, I did sell Sumeria Horseback Riding for 37 gold - every other civ except for Sumeria and Russia had it at that point, so it was pointless to keep it and let them trade it.
Turn 5: Finished road on iron, we now have Iron!
Set both workers to mining the iron - done in 6.
Catherine/Russians demanded Horseback Riding - gave it to them, as horseback riding wasn't worth very much at that point.
Finished Spearman at Hamburg, started Library - done in 10.
Found out England had Monarchy - no way to get it currently.
Set the science slider to 60% temporarily - map making done in 25, 2 gpt profit.
Turn 6:
Konisberg finishes Worker, start a Library (Culture, so we can grab the grapes.)
Found out the Russians are building the Statue of Zeus.
Moved new worker south of Konisberg to chop wood - Konisberg needs more food!
Turn 7:
Sumeria successfully declared war on the English. Heheheh. So it IS possible to have two AIs declare war on each other due to border problems! Good for us :)
Berlin finished Granary, set it to Worker to bleed off pop (Pop increase next turn, civil disorder problem.)
Leipzig finishes Barracks, set it to Spearman
Worker near Leipzig finished chopping, set it to roading.
Turn 8:
Berlin increased in pop.
Found out Spain will nego peace, but war happiness GOOD!
Turn 9: Berlin produced worker
Set it to worker again to bleed off excess pop
Set worker to move towards Leipzig to work it
Turn 10:
Random worker stuff, nothing else

Apparently I went a turn over, but I can't figure out where :(. Probably was caused by the stopping at turn 6...Wait, turn 0 was 1225BC?

I don't know :P

Here's the save!

England demanded Philosophy - I took the risk and declined (Sorry!). They chickened out on declaring war on the almighty one! Bwahahaha :P

Very risky to decline, but it worked our marvelous. Very good trade with England I'd say.

And it also ended up working out to bribe the Russians to stay off our back with Horseback Riding, grs.

It was very risky, but there was two factors that ended up making me decline.
#1: England is in no position currently to wage war very well against us. They'd have to go through Sumerian territory - which would piss them off at England - and Sumeria is easy enough to bribe into a Military Alliance once we get MA. Plus, the game is so early that there is no way to hit us from overseas - we are currently the closest to map making, and that's 25 turns away! Likely, it'd take them 15-20 turns to even REACH our territory - and that's at a bare minimum - and by then, we'd have at least Swordsman ready to "put the hurt" on the crappy warriors they sent our way.

#2: We had a monopoly on phil, which made it worth some serious cash to other people. With a bit of strategic trading later, I believe I can leverage the phil advantage into getting us Monarchy -and- Construction before my turns end, assuming the comp actually trades amongst itself. Trading Phil to England worked out wonderfully, as they have Monarchy, and I believe the comps will trade for Monarchy before Phil (At the time I traded to England, they had enough of a tech lead, plus an obvious plan to head towards Monarchy, so I had decided to take the risk again.). Hence, at least two comps will have Monarchy by the time we are ready to trade for it. With the right amount of gold and gpt, I believe I can end up getting both Monarchy and Construction as an end result, as the comp will likely end up trading Construction for Monarchy.

I took a lot of risks, but there was only one real gamble. Declining the extortion by England ;).

On a sidenote, I'm SERIOUSLY considering gifting the Russians with 1 or 2 gpt. They have nothing to trade for it, but it -will- hopefully keep them off of our backs for 20 turns. They are being -extremely- aggressive, including having a warrior stack heading somewhere. Right now, I want ROP so badly - it'd make several of the aggression problems lessen a great deal.

One thing that I want to do ASAP - Establish an embassy with Sumeria.

I think the best thing that we can do atm is work on improving att with Sumeria, and keep them as a close ally - and use them to protect us from bigger civs untill we are better able to protect ourselves. Their Enkidu will do wonders if we can get them to protect us.

Another thing I am considering is making a spearman and warrior "wall" if I can find a good chokepoint of 2-3 tiles somewhere if I see a stack of 1-move units coming. Don't let them into our territory, and force them to declare war on fortified spearmen in advantaged territory if they want to attack us - then use the warriors to pick off the rest of the wounded units. Also, I want to begin to build Trebuckets for bombard, or possibly Archers for their defensive bombard....Preferably Trebuckets, because offensive bombard is good.

On a sidenote, we -need- to get more luxuries. If we can get surplus of 2 lux, or better yet 3 lux, we'll have an -insane- upper hand when it comes to dealing with the comps - it'll be possible to trade a lux for a tech in theory, even!

On a sidenote, it's a pain in the ass to deal with this war. I'm going to try to get it to end asap, and I'd recommend any future person to try to end it asap due to trading opportunities.

On a very, very good note, the Sumerians declared war on the English - the two people that have techs we don't are at war with each other.

Apologies for the double post ahead of time.

My new mobo arrived tonight, which means that the rest of my parts should arrive by Monday. If it ends up that my turn comes around on Monday, would someone care to swap me turns? (It may end up taking up to 3 days to debug everything properly and get Civ re-setup with the new parts.)

its looking ok at the moment... some good trading has helped A LOT.
we already have an embassy with sumeria btw hajime, i made it on the turn we got writing, and i cant find where we got into the war with spain? when did that happen? oh, was it the end of your turn set grs?

yea, i just got confused as you say you refused the demand and that the war happiness would be good, but you didn't say "we are at war with spain" so i didn't notice until i read through...
