O%, of course, since thanks to the second amendment, the US citizens have guns with which to form militias and crush the US army.

Quoted for the Gawd danged trewth. Greatest Masquerouge post ever.

Except maybe for those few nutjobs in the south that still want to see the Confederacy rise again... not that it ever rose in the first place...

They say if you walk up a steep hill in Pennsylvania and look south, and with the right kind of eyes you can still see the high water mark where the wave broke and rolled back:D

Unlikely.

If your thinking Crossing the Rubicon style. You need a commander far from govermental oversight and loads of charisma to overthrow a stable, non-autocratic regime. These days there's very few places in the world where Uncle Sam can't over see his generals and rotate troop before they become to devoted. Besides, the person would need to be in the western hemisphere, or have control over a fair chunk of the navy as
well.

Also unlikely if your thinking Banana republic style. America likes un-ruptured rule of law by elected officials, and they can be quite willing to enforce it. Some of the gun nuts in this country have tanks!

On a scale of one to ten what do you think the odds of the United States being caught up in a military coup within the next 6 years are? (one being near zero 0.0000001 area and 10 being somewhere around 50%)

I have a school report on coups and how they were pulled off. I've been watching some conspiracy theory stuff ( some of it with some facts and such in it) - I don't think I would put it totally outside of the realm of possibility.

The sad part is I am not really convinced it would be a bad thing :(

Negative infinity-1. In other words, no chance at all.

With perhaps the only possibility of military control being if the nation was threatened with civil war that could collapse the nation, 0%.

A recent military coup in a state without strongly-rooted democratic traditions has been unable to assert itself within the state's own capital...

I don't see why one might succeed in Washington.

?

And what facts show that one is possible? Unless TeH JOOS and the NWO really did do 9/11.
Actually it is about the motives behind the coup in Thailand (the most current one) and the reasoning behind it - not being told etc etc - Your basic military industrial complex take over.

You need to do a lot more research for your school report, if you really believe any of those two statements.

Well a coup could cause a lot of confusion and lead to a less centralized government (meaning a lot more state rights and independence) and if it went straight to elections within 4 or 5 years it may not be so bad. (maybe they will even get rid of the federal reserve system ;) )

If anyone was wondering I voted 2 which means it is in the *0.035 - 2 % range 40 or 50 General/Admirals could cause a quick military on military fight, blame some politicians , seize control of the media , and be in the billfold of a group of Gay, French, Socialist, Atheist , Billionaires. ..... or something to that end.

*A very rough estimate ;)

about nearly impossible. Now the next question would be "What are the chances of bush staying in power as a "President""

I reckon 0.35 - 2% ish also - If we go to war (as in actually declaring war) it would not be to unlikely that he stay untill it's over. At least that was the people's mentality with *FDR.

* It used to be that presidents has unlimited terms and were just expected to step down after two terms - by tradition. Fears that FDR would become some sort of Dictator lead congress to set a term limit.

...yeah, but unlike FDR, Bush has the constitution preventing him...

it's very doubtful. Generals wouldn't be able to instigate a coup unnoticed. If they did instigate a coup it would have to be very small. The state governments would be able to raise up a militia to stop them.

There are too many generals so there isn't that much power in the hands of one man and none of them with considerable political weight to pull this off. Honestly I can't even name a general other than Petraeus and i had to look on google to know how to spell it.

Man. Elta. Are you trying to seem smart or something? Oh, FDR served for four terms, oh no!

The Constitution was specifically amended because he spent four terms in office. They decided that if two was good enough for Washington, it was good enough for everybody else.
