A little comment concerning difficulty:
I used to win most of my games with RoM on level prince. With AND installed I do not have the slightest chance on that difficulty level so I will have to go back to noble or even lower.

lol. This is indeed great news for us who play Deity and thought the AI was too easy in 1.73.

Looking forward to play 1.74 :)

1.74G Noble level, Mansa and I have the smallest Empires entering the Medieval Era. The Ottomans and Germans both have 16 and 15 cities resp., double what we have. The rest of the AI is in between us and them. I finally have reached 3rd in power/tech but if the Ottomans find a way to get to my island/continent (archipelago map Giant) trouble is sure to follow.

For the 1st time Ever Shaka is my Friend. :p But I have to watch him constantly as we now are neighbors.

I'm Not overexpanding! Nor have I been since 174 was introduced, contrary to others claims.

I would be the smallest empire but I finally captured 3 Barb cities, lost one back to the barbs and then recaptured it. I actually should have 4 to 5 more cities than I do. And If I don't start expanding soon I will get overwhelmed.

I have finally been able to keep a modest positive gold flow (+5 to + 25) thru out the Classical Era.

JoE, what settings do you have that game on? I'm having constant problems with the AIs stagnating and failing to become a real threat, and I have flexible difficulty on meaning I'm often toggled up to Emperor or above and still pimp-slapping them, for want of a better word.

i know that Joseph doesn't use revolutions mod. i've observed that AI had always problems with that module. in older versions it severely weakened the AI. since then Afforess fixed some of the AI code that didn't understand how to deal with it (bad expansion strategy was one problem). i'm not sure how large the gap currently is but i would still suggest to turn off revolutions if one wants a challenging game (revolutions are just too easy to deal with for players who have a little experience with that mod).

As much as I love Revolutions, it seems to no longer be affecting both myself and the AIs in any significant way - the only major thing I see is that an empire that is already losing in a terrific manner might have a revolution.

Minor bug? (I was using patch D, but didn't see it listed in the change notes):

When I have a ship capable of carrying units sitting on a sea tunnel, units moving through the sea tunnel automatically board the ship. Not that big a deal except when I build a seatunnel through "hostile" waters, I'd want my ship to sit on the tunnel to prevent pillaging...

Patches are ALWAYS savegame compatible so go ahead and install G. Just do it.

Otherwise, yeah, this is a new one :). Wait until about Wed. or so, before Afforess reply to all these posts here since.

Except when you make some minor "tweaks" to the global defines, and the patch has change to the global defines, which re-installing overrides (so I have to make a backup, etc...). :D

That being said, I went ahead and patched to G. But I was prepared for my game to be lost in the process...

No Rev, No Vassal, No Barb Civ or World, No Flex Difficulty-locked on Noble, No Tech Diffusion, 8AI, Giant Archipelago Map, the map is really the Key.

I've found that the Arch map, with less than 10 AI on giant and above, gives the AI time to build up.

Shaka does concentrate too much on Impi as has been observed before. He does have Ax, Pike, and Longbow.

I have also observed that Fredrick has a city with 7 priest for Naghalism (sp?) sitting in it with only 1 defender.

I now have 18 cities at 500AD with the Ottomans leading with 25 cities, Fredrick has 19, Shaka has 18, Mansa has 16. There are 3 AI that I still do not have contact with so I don't know their size or ranking yet. I have sent my 1st Caravels out to circumnavigate the map so I should find them soon.

No wars with any AI so far, I've been acquiring cities from the barbs on my island/continent (4 so far and a 5th under attack).

I also do not go into Embassy trading very easily and so Open Borders is only with select AI. I actually have OB with Shaka and Fred. Otto and Mansa are annoyed with me even though we have very limited contact. I actually got Elephant from Shaka!

I just researched Gunpowder and I have sulphur on my land.

I have 3 religions founded, Judaism, Buddhism, and Taoism. If it wasn't for the religions I would be drowning in :yuck:. For a period of time during medieval era I had a difficult time keeping the cashflow positive. I just entered Renaissance Era.

I made a post here about Revolutions being broken.

mayby a bug:
In my last game AI won religion victory when not selected in option (I vote for him by the way . . .)

start with emperor difficulty and with flexible on.
barb civ
rev on.

I like terra maps

that should give you som challenge.

and I found out the AI is more competitive if only conquest domination and science victory are on

good luck

I generally only run on Tectonics maps - the most realistic imho - But I think the problem may be that I put too many AIs in the game. Admittedly, last game was looking up as the civs had more cities than I did, but they were still quite technologically behind. Perhaps it is because I prefer worlds with a lot of 5-6 city countries and then for consolidation to happen through war? I thought Ruthless AI would make the AI somewhat more capable of determining which of its neighbors would make tasty snacks, however.

After playing RoM for 3 years it's been my experience that once you get past 18 AI in a game the AI is restricted. Even with RoM's expanded resources the lack of critical resources with too many AI inhibits the AI's ability to expand and conquer. With ~10 AI or less on larger maps the AI has time to develop big well defended core cities therefore making them a tougher opponent. This will also mean that rival AI Empires, on the larger maps, will have 20+ cities. And trying to conquer an Empire with that many cities is much tougher and a longer project than any AI with only a handful of cities.

Fewer AI's and Larger maps are the main reason I'm still playing on Noble level. Otherwise when the map contains 20 AI (which you can easily get with Barb Civ, or Barb World turned on even with only 7 starting AI) I rapidly climb to the top and then build up mega forces and go a conquering and pillaging. But those games are only challenging for a short time. The Archipelago, Lakes (with High sea level), Island, and Custom Continents Maps all provide, in the early game, a chance for the AI to develop and become real threats in my experience.

All this with No Rev and No Vassals turned on. Vassals turned me off a long time ago. When you would be putting down a rival and they capitulate to someone else but not you and it was generally to a strong trading partner to your Empire to boot. That just plain infuriated me that the game allowed such behavior. I'm conquering them they better surrender to me. It maybe different today but it instilled such a strong dislike that I won't play with vassals on any more. And it's been a similar experience with Rev that I won't play with it on either.

So for me it is probably the number of civs, then. I generally play on Giant with 18 civs to start and barb civs on... I might try running on a Gigantic map with 15 civs and no barb civs and see where that takes me.

I turned Vassals off some time ago, the whole "surrender to someone that's not you" thing was just plain infuriating. I do turn Permanent Alliances on, because lategame when the AIs start teaming up things get interesting for me. It also serves as inspiration for me to not offend EVERY ai on the map :)

Interesting thoughts Jos & Ice.
Personally I love Start as minor, Rev, Vassals and Barb civ, though the first thing usually I do is tweaking barb civ and rev. These features makes a different civ experience and gives a dynamic game, but unfortunately also weakens the AI. If just..... ;)

Every patch since 1.73 was released, and culminating in patch G of 1.74, has made multiplayer progressively more broken. Now the games START with OOS errors, and if a player rejoins, they are assigned a random new location. Logs attached.

Hi, did you install the last version of ROM, 2.92, before installing A new Dawn ?

A new Dawn 1.73 was for ROM 2.91,
A new Dawn 1.74 is for ROM 2.92
