Let's start research towards miltary tradition. The GL will give us everything else.

My thinking was a bit different.

With only three civs contributing to the library (India is backwards), it could take a while before chivalry comes up. As noted, I started on Mono because I think the ai will go for Feud. Then we can try to get Chivalry ourselves. The riders will be more effective if we aren't facing other knights.

Am I way off base here? I realize that we will *eventually* get everything from the Library, but it seems that the longer we give the ai, the harder it will be.

0-350AD

I am inclined to agree with Sesn. We need Monotheism/Feudalism for our Riders but can depend on the AI to get Feudalism for us so I am not going to change the research path.

Looks like our diligence in barb hunting in the east was a little less than diligent. Wake up two warriors and send them toward the camps I can see. Then start counting bogies inside the borders. I count 5 Mongol horsemen incoming, 2 Roman legions and archer and 2 spears.. Tartar horsemen to the west and Ghuzz to the east. The spices and dyes are vulnerable to barbarians, the ivory road to a Roman spear and the horses between Shanghai and Beijing to the Romans.

Barbarians and infidels all around…

Well here it comes…

Romans move onto the horse road, barbarians gallop in circles around our force in the NE, move onto the spices at Canton, and otherwise go in circles. Mongols attack Shanghai and lose a single horsemen, two more are crippled and retreat. And did I mention the Persian archer that appeared in the north?

Put horsemen in queue everywhere as we are going to lose the horse road next.

1-360AD
Kill two Thracian carousel horses in the NE with vet horsemen hoping for promotions but no such luck and move the horsemen back on the mountain. Then build a gems colony on the mountain. It will be vulnerable to Persians but lets me lower the lux tax.

Kill the Ghuzz standing on the spice farm with a vet sword.

Hunker down at Shanghai as taking out the Mongol horsemen will leave units exposed to Romans and other baddies.

Sword guarding the Spices gets a promotion to elite thanks to the Ghuzz.

Romans and Mongols do some road pillaging at Shanghai.

2-370AD
Kill another Thracian in the NE hoping for horsemen promotion but no dice.

Cats go two for four on Roman legions at Shanghai, wounding both.
Sword takes casualties killing one legion, no promotion. Second vet sword takes light casualties killing second Roman. Cover exposed sword with second sword and cat from Beijing.

3-5 380AD to 400AD
More of the same, trying to keep the damage to a minimum. Move NE force onto mountain above Bactra. Lose an elite sword leader fishing against the Persians. Science has to go to zero as treasury is in deficit and the road pillaging is costing us gold. There are five elites in the force above Bactra (of seven). If we don’t pull another MGL I am going to throw something.

Persians immortals bust the gems colony in the NE and everybody riots.

6-410
Feckless the warrior busts the Ghuzz camp in the NE.

At Bactra vet sword absorbs cat hit, kills immortal and promotes. Second vet sword kills spear and promotes flawlessly. Elite horseman fails his boards and dies against spear. Elite archer takes the city against crippled spear but does not promote :wallbash:.

City burned and we get another worker and a cat.

Remove the Persian threat of an immortal and two archers at Shanghai. Swords promote but no leaders form elite horseman victory against crippled immortal.

There are four Mongol horsemen, two Roman legions and a Persian archer in the neighborhood and others incoming at Shanghai.

Ghuzz horsemen destroy three workers on the way to the second iron source.

Romans, Mongols and Persians pillage the improvements at Shanghai.

Elite sword in the NE kill Persian immortal but does not promote.

Ghuzz horsemen dispatch Feckless and his brother Reckless runs away form some Uzbeks.

7-420
Deal a little more death to some Ghuzz horseman and Roman spears. Move NE force to mountain to heal up.

Dispatch workers out of Shanghai to build another connector and head them towards the second iron.

8-430
Build an iron colony on the borders of Susa with a captured Persian slave. Move the NE force onto the colony and will advance one more forward and build a mountain road for the assault on Susa. Our galley has identified the Persian iron source in the mountains outside Antioch.

Battle with Mongol horsemen at Shanghai produces another MGL. Quianlong hangs his sword at Shanghai until we can take Susa.

Ank09MGL430AD.jpg

9-440
Positioning on Susa. Build road on mountain above the town.

Lose a sword to a Roman legion at Shanghai, then kill the legion.
10-450
Moving into position on Susa. Cat, archers, swords and horses are on the mountain above the town.

Ank09Susa450AD.jpg

Clear the neighborhood of Shanghai of dangerous intruders.

Canton is building a market to help the treasury and the contentment problems out there. Once the core is cleared we need to peel workers to rebuild the infrastructure at Shanghai. The barbarian threat is diminishing thanks to a Roman legion south of Shanghai. Feckless’s brother Reckless is fighting off Uzbek horsemen in the East trying to get to the camp on the coast. There is at least one other camp, unless the Mongols have dispersed it, to the west of Shanghai.

Two Indian archers have shown up at the spice camp north of Beijing. There is a horse and a spear to deal with them.

Didn’t get any cats built as the pressure of incoming created a need for more active defense. Have queued horsemen in all the military towns as a Roman spear will pillage the second horse source soon. The garrison sword at Beijing failed to kill him when he arrived.

Great work on the Persians. I see the Indians are making a come back. If we can keep the pressure on X-man, a world without immortals would be our reward.

Good job, Bede. :)

Looks like Shanghai's surroundings took some hits... but with ind workers we'll be able to rebuild fast.

Are we still a despotism, or have we gotten monarchy from the GLib? We'll need it for really effetcive use of our lands...

Are we still a despotism, or have we gotten monarchy from the GLib? We'll need it for really effetcive use of our lands...

Ummm, the screenie shows despotism....

I know that Republic was available, but that's obviously not a great choice for us.

Looks like Cuivienen is MIA. :(

I'll try playing now, let's see what happens...

EDIT: Have I eaten something I shouldn't have ( :smoke: ) or has Bede forgotten to post the save?

Oops.

Try this.

450AD [Preturn]: Bede, you should play your turns to the end, it is a little frustrating to get a half - played turn.

Well, let's see. Some baddies around Shanghai... a Roman legion and horse, several Mongol units and some tartars. Not too bad.

Bombard the legion, but only one cat hits.
Kill the Roman horse with a vet horse which promotes.

IBT: Instead of attacking our cat stack, the Roman legion goes for the Tartars... and kills both without additional casualties.

Beijing sword > sword.

460AD [1]: Iron is connected again.

We don't need the iron colony near Susa anymore, as the homeland Iron is connected, so I move all the troops to be ready to attack Susa next turn, hopefully get the city so we get an army.

Fresh sword from Beijing attacks the Roman spear that pillaged our horses, and wins after a tight battle. The promotion to elite was also well-earned.

Lose a vet sword to a 1-hp archer on a mountain. :( It promotes, too.

Vet sword from Canton takes care of the Ghuzz raiders that were attacking our spice farms.

IBT: Persians raid our iron colony near Susa.

3 Roman Legionaries approach Shanghai.

Our elite horse from Shanghai kills an attacking Mongol horse.
Vet sword kills Ghuzz horse attack, and promotes.

We have a nice amount of elites in our army, at least ½ of the units are elite...

470AD [2]: Bombard Susa, but the catapault misses.

Attack Susa:
Elite sword attacks reg spear, loses redlining the defender.
Elite sword kills reg spear.
Elite sword kills defending Immortal without casualties.
Vet horse kills 1-hp spear and takes the town + 4 slaves. :D

Qianlong in Shanghai builds an army.

Lose our galley to a Roman galley. :cringe:

IBT: The Roman legions approahc Shanghai... still one turn, then they'll be at the gates of the city.

Two Indian units attack the ivory colony, but it holds easily.

Shanghai sword > sword.

480AD [3]: Find two veteran swords in Shanghai, add them to Qianlong's army.

Those barbs are quite pests... luckily they don't cut roads outside our territory, we'd be in big trouble if they did.

IBT: Those roads help our enemies too, some pop up near Shanghai again... Mongols this time.

Beijing sword > sword.

490AD [4]: Fill the army with a third vet sword, new from Beijing.

Miscount the moves, and the army won't get to attack the Romans this turn. :cringe:

Elite sword kills off a Roman 3-hp legion easily.
Elite horse gets redlined, but kills off the legion.
Another elite horse finishes off the legion mini SoD.

Reckless is having troubles, and needs some healing in the East.

Switch Beijing from sword to catapault.

IBT: Ack. Three Immortals apper North of Shanghai.

500AD [5]: Elite sword kills off a barb horse in our lands.

IBT: Beijing cat > horse. We are in need of fast units.
Shanghai sword > horse.

510AD [6]: Notice our iron source is unshielded. Manouver a little, and there is a sword on top of it, but Beijing will need an entertainer for one turn.

IBT: Persians settle just beside our fortress.

Enemies whirl around Shanghai...

We get a palace expansion. No, 2! :yeah:

520AD [7]: Bombard the Persian intruding Immo's.

Spice protector kills a Roman spear in our lands.

An elite horse finishes off one of the Immo's and...

520ad_mgl.jpg

I thought I'd crop the image, but then I thought it'd give a nice view of the Shanghai area, so...

We can't build an army for a while, and no useful great wonder is in reach propably, so...

No AI has other MA techs than Engineering. But I'll wait, perhaps we should Rush Sun Tzu's.. no, I think a Marketplace in Beijing would be the best thing to do now, we'll get enough leaders with this amount of elite wins..

Jin Qiu goes to Beijing to wait for the horse to be built.

The army finishes off the other immo.

Elite sword makes Mongol horse retret near Shanghai.

Elite sword kills reg spear in Tyre and razes the city.

530AD [8]: Major Burns kills a redlined Roman spear and promotes to elite.

IBT: Reckless is attacked by 2 barb horses, and is redlined again. :rolleyes:

What's this? Beijing riots... and I'm ruse I MMed it to not. :hmm:

Ah, I get it. A Persian spear had moved to one of te river tiles, so less commerce = less happy faces = riot.

Shanghai horse > market. I think we can as well hurry it here..

540AD [9]: Jin Qiu hurries market in Shanghai.

Elite sword kills Persian intruder.
Elite sword kills Roman settler pair South of Persia.

IBT: And just as I started to get the place in control again, some Roman legions and Mongol horsemen pop up.

We gain Monarchy from the GLib! :king: When should we revolt?

Beijing horse > cat.
Shanghai market > horse.
Canton market > galley.

550AD [10]: Move the Northern stack to Lutetia, I want a free way to our homeland.

Army kills a Persian immo on a mountain.
Elite sword kills barb horse near Canton.

The markets helped a lot, our income bounced up like +10gpt! :D

Gah, Beijing needs to grow a little, until it can make 15spt, now it can only get up to 14. So near, but still so far... duh.

Cuivienen - MIA?
Ankka - hoping he didn't mess the MGL decision..

REMEMBER: 24h to post a "got it", total 48 to post turnlog and save.

@Ankka,
Sorry about the half played save, but I lost track of the final save. Too many games in one day. They all hit on the same day....

Just to be contrary, but do we gain anything from Monarchy, other than extra food?

As a 3cc corruption isn't a problem, our workers are industrious enough, three MP's are going to help....a little, our towns are at size 10 and pretty productive....

Anyway, just sometning to think about...

Bede - that is a very good point which I have never considered. I suppose Monarchy would be worth it if we ever got to steam, but it may not be worth it now. This is probably some thing we need to discuss before I go ahead and revolt.

The only other thing we gain is the cash rush ability, and possibly a couple shields on hills and mountains. Can't recall if we have any high commerce squares, but certainly not enough to be a factor.

I think the small benefits outweigh the four or five turns of anarchy we'll probably draw, but it's close.

I say go ahead, the extra food will allow us to work a mountain or two, translating to extra shields as well.

Good point on the mountain terrain, Sesn.

I forget what a rider costs, more or less than a knight?

We need no more than 14spt for knights in 5 and 16spt for cav in 5 so those shouyld be our targets.

Beijing is 14spt now at max without revolution. With revolt the hill would make one shield more, and propably also less corruption, so it would be 15 spt > horses/swords in 2..

I'd say let's revolt, we won't get a long anarchy anyway, have enough troops to defend even if we did, and so on.

Pre-flight – 550 AD – Check out some things. Revolt, pull two turns of anarchy. :hmm: I’ve never heard of such a small anarchy period.

Persia is playing a 5CC. I love it when the AI play a variant also. :D

IBT – The Mongols and the Romans approach Shanghai. The Mongols start the HG.

1. 560 AD – Kill a Mongol horse, retreat another.
@ Lutetia – Kill the defending Legion and the city autorazes.

IBT - Kill a Mongol horse, lose a sword to a Mongol horse. (3-1)
The glorious Kingdom of China is born.

2. 570 AD – Move next to Gordium and capture two slaves. We have a nice stack.

Kill a legion with Qianlong, then we get…
ANK09_570_Leader.jpg

Change Shanghai to the HG and rush it with the Leader.
Kill the remaining Roman archers with a sword and a horse.

IBT – Kill a barb horse.
Shanghai: HG=>horse

3. 580 AD – Move into position on the right side of the Gordium River.

IBT – Kill two barb horses. The Mongols ride into town.
Beijing: cat=> cat

4. 590 AD – Kill a Indian archer, kill another. Kill a Mongol horse and get another leader. The leader will build the Colossus.

@ Gordium –Kill a spear with a horse, lose a horse,
Kill the remaining spear with an archer. Raze the city. (8-2)

IBT – Lose a spear and a sword to Legions.
Canton: Galley=>colossus

5. 600 AD – Use Spice Protector to kill a Mongol spear and
ANK09_600_Leader.jpg

Cool three leaders. Sun Tzu hurries the Great Wall in Beijing.

Kill a Mongol horse, a rl legion, two more Mongol horses,

Start marching on Antioch. (12-4)

To be continued…

IBT – Lose a spear to a legion, lose a horse to a Mongol horse.
Beijing: GW=>Market
ANK09_GA.jpg

Shanghai: Horse=>sword
Canton: Colossus=>Cat

6. 610 AD – Canton is at an even 20 spt in the GA.

Kill a Persian sword covering a settler and get another leader.

Additional kills: 2 Mongol archers, 2 legions

Bump science up to 90% to get Mono in 8. (17-6)

IBT – Lose a sword to a Mongol horse.
Canton: cat=> cat

7. 620 AD – Kill two mongol horses, spot three immortals just to the north. Meet two immortals coming down the eastern road. Lose the horse guarding our leader to a Persian spear and the leader runs back to a healthy sword.

March on Antioch. (19-8)

IBT – The Persians want to talk something about him letting us play a 5CC if we let him play a 5CC, no thanks, let’s see what you can do with three?

On the NE Road, kill one immortal and lose our sword to another.
Shanghai: sword=>sword
Canton: cat=>Sword

8. 630 AD - @ Antioch – Kill two spears, raze the city, capture another cat. Now Persia has lost their iron. Bombard some immortals on a mountain.
9. 640 AD – Kill a Mongol spear, retreat from an immortal, then kill it. Use the army to kill an immortal. Science comes down 10%
Start marching towards Persepolis. (25-9)

IBt – Lose a horse.
Shanghai, Canton: sword=>sword

10. 650 AD – Kill a Mongol horse and an immortal. (27-10) Not the greatest kill ratio.

After Action - I have a small force heading up the NE road hunting for immortals. There is a sword escorting the leader. A galley is sailing clockwise around the Pangaea. Move to the NW as you are able. I’ve started building forts.

Up in Persia, keep going after the Persians. Ignore the Romans and Indians for now. Let’s knock the Persians out of it. They’re on the ropes.
