Are fitness freaks wasting their time?

Does going to a gym expend more time than you gain?

It is their time to waste, and frankly if they are enjoying it how can you call it a waste? Very easily/B] Is going to see a movie a waste of time? Yes. Is going out to dinner a waste of time? If going alone, yes. Is washing your car every weekend whether it needs it or not a waste of time? Yes, and also a waste of water. Is posting on an internet forum dedicated to a game a waste of time? Definitely.

You, sir, just earned a ticket to the Mass. Bay Colony, circa 1640. You should fit in just fine. :) IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND!

How is going out to dinner alone a waste of time? It's not like stuff tastes better with a friend. I get how the experience can be enhanced with company but I've had many good feeds flying solo.

To me, going out for dinner is more for the company than the food. Nice food is just a bonus.

It's a waste when I could be spending my time watching My Little Pony or playing the same Final Fantasy games 20 times.

Nothing prevents you from watching MLP and exercising at the same time. :mischief:

I hate watching TV without having something else to do at the same time.

excuse us for not wanting to be a fat slob who dies of diabetes.

I'm not going to be some lazy american on disability. I'm not some momma's boy democrat who expect the government to support them. Real men can take care of themselves, and that includes exercise so you don't end up on disability.

But yeah, some people are OCD on it, and spending more than 1 1/2 hours at the gym is a waste of time. Unless of course you are making money from it (model etc, athlete, etc.). But then again, some people are just vain, and want to look better than everyone else.

Didn't you vote for the welfare king?

You've fallen victim to the classic trap of asking a different question in the first post than in the poll. Therefore, I can't vote.

To answer the poll question, "No" is my answer - going to a gym in itself can be worthwhile in terms of quality gained for amount of time spent. Although, by and large, "any exercise" fits in place of "going to the gym" for general health benefits. I say this as someone who doesn't go to a gym, because I want my exercise to be fun, and in my opinion, simply working out at a gym is not fun.

To answer the first post question, "yes", in my opinion, "fitness freaks" are not getting as much of a return as they put in, if their goal is to be healthy and enjoy the rest of life more. Like Leifmk said, if this is your thing, or if you want to be a stellar athlete, then by all means, a "fitness freak" lifestyle makes sense. But assuming you're only in it for the health benefits and don't enjoy it *that* much... being a "fitness freak" is more investment than it's really worth, versus a more moderate regimen.

But again, I've never really done that, so I'm not speaking from experience.

I'd argue fitness improves quality of life, but I'm pretty sure evidence shows that fitness improves longevity too.

Some very clever guy once said that if your main concern is long-term health, it's not such a good idea to aspire to elite level in any one sport; what you should do is try to become mediocre at several very different ones.

What the hell does "wasting time" even mean in this context? If you enjoy doing it, are you really wasting your time?

I don't know anybody who enjoys going to the gym. I'm quite indifferent to it, really you are putting yourself through some discomfort (if your doing it right, of course ;) ). It's for the benefits of gymming. For instance after I go, ceterus paribus, i always feel in a good mood and i know that my body is healthier and most importantly i should be able to look better in the future.

I quite enjoy lifting weights and staring at girls achieving new personal bests. Lifting clears your head, it's pretty Zen.

Actually, admiring the good looking woman is always good. Whose idea was it to make female gym gear so..tight? :D
