I recently saw a demotivotional poster that said basically: 'arguing on the internet is like the special olympics... even if you win you're still ********.'

So my question is have you changed your opinion on something based on internet conversations? Or actually more to the point have you changed a "CORE" belief based on an internet discusion?

I will certainly make an argument about the spelling of your title.

Remove the 'e' at once, sir, and then you can answer your own question:
have you changed your opinion on something based on internet conversations?

:mischief:

More seriously, yes, I have changed beliefs on internet discussion.

That depends one who it is with. For a lot of posters on this site who bring nothing to the table, it is not worth it. For an equal portion, the opposite is true.

Definitely not. I still do it though because I am a fool and have too much free time.

Do you prejudge a post based on the person posting?

Usually not, else your life will devolve into this:

Similar threads have been done before, but.....

a) yes, argument is fun
b) although I don't have major changes, cfc + internet does make shift some of my views
c) there are actually acouple major changes (i.e. marijuana policy) that internet changed my opinion on
d) internet (cfc and other site I go to) connect me with Europeans, Canadians, etc, etc that I wouldn't get elsewhere. Even if I only argue with them and conclude they are completely wrong, it's still better than seeing only American idiots
e) ??????
f) profit

I think there have been numerous posts of people on this forum of that exact situation mangxema just posted, even on cfc. I've used the 'computer is taking ages to turn off excuse' for a delay in the errr... activities to commence before simply because i like having an argument and rarely can you do it in public.

I've changed the way I view ideas based on internet discussions (not necessarily arguments which merely make me see how humans will cling to their false worldviews even while a hurricane of truth blows around them) definitely. I mean I don't consider my 50,000 or so posts online a complete waste.

I don't think I've changed any of my core beliefs via internet discussions , but then I'm not sure I'd know it if I had. I probably haven't changed anyone else's major beliefs either. I've been exposed to a lot of new ideas and perspectives though, and taken on a lot of that.

Maybe it's like Bugs Bunny, only we DID take a (slight) left at Albuquerque. And since we've gone thousands of miles since, that slight course correction now makes a huge difference.

I am always glad to help. ;)

First and foremost you do it for fun. I doubt anyone seriously posts here for the pure reason of wanting to convince people. That may be a secondary objective, but enjoyment is the main concern.

I don't think I've ever completely changed my opinions based on arguments here, but I've certainly refined my opinions, or altered them. Just no complete turnarounds that I know of.

It matters what you get out of it. Some of us just enjoy a little political debate every now and then. Keep the political juices flowing (i.e. at least makes you think about things).

Seeing as political and religious debates are a bad idea with real life people and friends (oh, so you think I'm a cold-hearted baby-murderer; yeah, it was a good idea to debate abortion with you), forums like these work perfectly.

well, it is fun. once you realize that some people can not be argued with and just bog the whole entertaining bit down (which some people actually enjoy wading through, not one of them myself. not going to name names of people who quote. every. single. line. and. just. want. to. stall. till. somebody. gives. up, mind you ;) ). ignore a good bunch of it and just have fun with the rest.

I try not to, but I'm not going to claim that I'm entirely non biased. Everyone is to a certain degree. I wouldn't say that I "prejudge" though.

I do prejudge: some posters have most excellent comments and I will search them out to read what they have to say. I haven't counted... maybe 6 or so.

same here, though on a negative base. with some posters I, by now, merely read a few lines and if it is going the way I suspect it is I just scroll down and see if anybody else has written something enticing.
