Sailing, swimming - yes, not so sure about kyaking. It's more likely it's done near rivers/waterfalls.
Black Sea monsters, I haven't heard of. Monsters are more common near rivers or wells - forest spirits seeking to steal good folks souls.

Well, I'd say that they spread from river to river via the groudwaters or the merely the Russians couldn't think of their folklore and using their faith the forest spirits managed to reach Russia.

(...) Bulgaria, an example not so spectacular [as Slovakia] because here the transformation of Communists into post-Communists wasn't even connected with giving up power by them.
