Axis occupation of Greece
East Macedonia and Thrace came under Bulgarian occupation and was annexed to Bulgaria, which had long claimed these territories. Throughout the Bulgarian zone, Bulgarian policy was that of extermination or expulsion,[25] aiming to forcibly Bulgarize as many Greeks as possible and expel or kill the rest
Forced labor was introduced, and the authorities confiscated the Greek business property and gave it to Bulgarian colonists.[26] A spontaneous and badly organized uprising around Drama in late September 1941 was violently crushed by the Bulgarian Army.[24] By late 1941, more than 100,000 Greeks had been expelled from the Bulgarian occupation zone.[28][29] Bulgarian colonists were encouraged to settle in Macedonia by government credits and incentives, including houses and land confiscated from the natives.
In total, the Germans executed some 21,000 Greeks, the Bulgarians executed some 40,000 and the Italians executed some 9,000
