Ask a Kentuckian!

Is bluegrass all that prevalent?

Not so much where I live, its more prevalent the farther you get away from Louisville. I don't really care much for it, the musical genre I really enjoy is classic rock.

How did KY come up with the greatest state motto ever?

It goes back to Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky, he was fond of a stanza from The Liberty Song that goes like this:

Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all,
By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall;
In so righteous a cause let us hope to succeed,
For heaven approves of each generous deed.

The song was from the American Revolution and stressed the need for unity in the fight for independence. The motto was not officially adopted until 1942 IIRC.

Merle Travis or Loretta Lynne?

I don't really listen to much country music, but I have heard the names and know that they are from Kentucky.

What is the point of Kentucky?

The Virginians were being power-hungry so we broke away from them.

Unfortunately it stopped being Banana Capitol of the world 4 years before I was born. I don't think I've ever actually been to that part of the state.

Cincinnati:

Part of Kentucky or Ohio?

(Ohioians north of Washington Court House rightfully declare it to be part of Kentucky)

Cincinnati is part of Ohio. I'd say that its more like Northern Kentucky is part of Ohio then the other way around.

I was under the impression that your state slogan was "Unbridled Spirit."

I was talking about the actual grass

@ Joe, It's not something you see everywhere, there is some in my back yard, I don't really know how prevalent it is.

That's just what's on our license plates because we like horses.

Most Kentuckians agree that the current license plates are a big improvement over the old sunshine plates:

I remember those ones and I hated them, a lot of other people hated them too. You used to see a lot of cars with frowning face stickers put on these plates.

Blue grass isn't something that grows purely in Kentucky. I have blue grass in my back yard; my grandfather planted it there.

Really? Well, I wasn't aware. I just know that's the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Kentucky.

I'm from Lexington and my parents are both from the East, my father's from Harlan County. But then I lived most of my adult life outside of Kentucky, outside of the US actually. Kentucky is still one of my favorite places, it's really beautiful and Lexington is a great place to live. Further East it's more "real" I'd like to travel around more when I get the chance, I only go to Eastern Kentucky to visit relatives.

Whom do Kentuckians typically root for in professional sports?

A very diverse group of teams. Often they are teams from Missouri, Indiana, Tennessee, or Ohio. I don't care much for professional sports, and pay more attention to college (and the UK vs. U of L rivalry is a big one). Of course you'll find Yankees fans in baseball, Celtics fans in basketball, etc.

Do Kentuckians resent that there isn't a Professional Baseball team in Louisville even though it was quite possibly the epicenter of baseball in the late 19th century?

(Also home to one of the bossest baseball bats?)

Aside from KFC and Thomas Hunt Morgan, what has Kentucky done for the world?

I've seen some scattered news of the Democrats trying to seriously challenge Mitch McConnell's seat in the Senate in the upcoming 2014 election. How is McConnell viewed in Kentucky beyond the typical favorable/unfavorable ratings reported by the polls?

Also, is there any serious local opposition to destructive mining techniques like MTM?
