Ask an Australian

No worries. Very glad you liked it. But let's do the Aussie version eh?
Damn! I didn't even notice! Sorry about that.

Only in his mind and the minds of roughly 1/3 of the planet...
Humans who exempt themselves are asking for trouble.
That's a good point. Muslims probably should have claimed Mohammed was God, instead of a prophet as they also believe Jesus to have been. Then some wouldn't try to claim he was just "asking for trouble", much like Moses and Joseph Smith.

The immaculate conception is not out of wedlock conception between man and woman.

Indeed, it celebrates the conception of the Virgin Mary whereupon she was cleansed of original sin (made immaculate, ergo without sin) by God.

The festival de-facto celebrating the conception of Christ is the Feast of the Annunciation. Christmas celebrates Christs birth, its not really important whether its the actual day or not, dec 25 was a good day for a celebration so the Church tacked it there :p

ANYWAYS, back on the topic of Ask an Australian I suppose, oh and Joan, Canberra is a hellhole of mindnumbing boredom if you take it as it is. However as has been said Canberra can be a good place to live but one must make the effort to actively seek out and participate in what there is in order to have that good lifestyle.

How the hell did this get into such a detailed religion thread?

The Australian art of the wandering conversation

And here I thought Canberra was the ultimate hellhole of mindnumbing boredom...

Canberra is quite a nice place to live actually. It's quite peaceful really.

What is BBQ culture like in Australia?
Is it a weekly thing, a summer-only thing? Do houses come with special BBQs built into the garden or side of the house? What would be cooking in a typical Ozzie BBQ?
..Oh and a national dish?
..and what do you think about all those Britons taking your jerbs?

..oh 8,000 posts DING DANG DOO

The BBQ culture in Australia is quite exaggerated, like all things. At least for me. But I would say a fair amount of people have barbies and use them fairly regularly. Although I have never seen a house with a barbie built in. I wouldn't know about the summer/winter thing as I rarely have BBQs, other than an occasional assuage sizzle, but that doesn't count.

A typical BBQ has beef, lamb, pork, chicken, sausages and prawns. Maybe some zucchini or some capcicum if you needed veggies or something.

If you wanted a traditional "Ozzie" dish then it would probably be
the beef pie. However, as someone else pointed out in the thread, Australians eat so much Asian food that one of those dishes would be more appropriate.

And we're only worried about them middle eastern migrants who
will only take jobs we wouldn't want and don't pay well anyway taking our jobs, mate.

Yeah, I think Canberra gets a bit of a rough time. I mean, even take tonight as an example. People say all the fun's in Sydney, but I'm sure Canberra will have a firework. Perhaps even two.

If I was in Canberra tonight, I would be down at the Polish Club down the road from my house, watching a 10-act Canberra Musicians Club gig culminating in a naked can-can act at 3am.

I kind of wish I hadn't committed to New Years in Sydney actually.

Which makes you run faster? Angry koala or Sydney funnel web spider thing?

Outside the cities basically this is a country for nature lovers, we have basically every landscape on the planet except tundra and volcanoes (we even have the Australian Alps and a ski season) so a lot of the visitors come for that stuff.

We've got a ski season (sort of), but we're missing actual mountains.

I've lived just down the street from the Polish club in a couple of different directions. Long time since I've been there though.

Was it a regular music venue then? Seems to have reinvented itself as the home base of the CMC. Local music, pierogi and Polish beer is a winning combination.

Don't think I saw anybody there, but that doesn't mean it wasn't happening. Think most of the stuff I went to was in Civic/Belco/Woden, plus Tilley's. And the Queanbeyan Leagues club, once. A very drunk, very new Grinspoon were the opening band, and I've never liked them since. Awesome night though.

Hey, finally we agree on something. Grinspoon indeed do suck!

I would like to know where the best higher-education and research institutions are, if that's not too much trouble.

The big cities.

The Group of Eight universities are generally held to be the highest quality in terms of research, faculty and admission standards. There are Sydney and UNSW in Sydney, Melbourne and Monash in Melbourne, Australian National University in Canberra, then the University of Adelaide, of Western Australia, and of Queensland in each of the other mainland state capitals.

Aussie unis are all generalist but you will find some have disciplines they are probably stronger than other unis in (statistics at Adelaide, philosophy at ANU, politics at Sydney, engineering at UNSW, etc)

I guess UNSW is Uni of New South Wales, right, but I'm curious what is Monash? I mean, where takes the Uni its name from?

Monash University was named after an Australian General, Sir John Monash by act of the Victorian Parliament in 1958. Its in Melbourne.

He must have been quite a remarkable man.
