AVS:1 OCC for beginners, my first hosted SG :)

I say go ahead and build the Mausoleum. The happiness benefits and eventual tourism benefits outweigh the early GA, I think. The G.Library and G.Lighthouse (should we get them both) would trigger an early GA as well, so we might as well get it over with.

The Mom is complete and I think we want to use Geminus for the Lighthouse. I didn't pull the trigger on it but he has been waiting patiently for this moment.

The SAVE

Pre-turn: Trade Writing to Maya for Warrior Code and 23g.
Trade Philosophy to Zulus for Polytheism and 20g.
Trade Philosophy to Maya for Horseback Riding.
Use Geminus to rush the Great Lighthouse.

1 330 B.C.: Great Lighthouse -> Dromon

2 310 B.C.:

3 290 B.C.: Dromon -> Dromon

4 270 B.C.: Spot a pink border north of Maya.

5 250 B.C.: Dromon -> Dromon
Pink border is Incas. They don't even have Alphabet

6 230 B.C.:

7 210 B.C.: Dromon -> Granary (a pre-build of sorts)

8 190 B.C.: Cultural influence expands. Also get a Palace addition.

9 170 B.C.: Literature learned. Now researchin Mathematics.
Constantinople switched to Great Library.

10 150 B.C.:

11 130 B.C.: Mayans have Monarchy now.

12 110 B.C.:

13 90 B.C.: A suicide Dromon spots an orange border. Please don't sink!

14 70 B.C.: Orange border is England. They have Monarchy, but lack many other techs.
Trade Writing, HBR, and 40g to England for Monarchy.

15 50 B.C.: Both England and Maya begin building the Hanging Gardens.

Notes: We are at tech parity with Zulus and Maya, while everyone else is behind by a few techs. We'll probably get Mathematics first, so let's hope for another SGL to rush the Hanging Gardens or something.

The Save:
The OCC Byzantines

Preturn analysis: MM for 1g more. Other than that, nothing much. Our little empire is pretty optimized. A pity we have to have our GA in despotism, but its probably best to wait with the revolt until the GL is finished.

Noting that we have a iron source nearby, the other civs might be willing to pay a lot for that. :groucho: The Incense too.

Question: does a volcano destroy roads and colonies?
AVS1_50BC-Volcano.jpg

If so, then it could be dangerous to sell that iron and we would need to build redundant roads to keep our be sure to keep our incense connected.

IBT - a dromon is lost in treachorous waters. :(

(1) 30BC - exploring. Setting the slaves to mine the mountain.

IBT - The Mayas complain about our curragh within their borders, well...

(2) 10BC - lower the research to 80%, we will get Math next turn, hopefully we'll be first to it.

IBT - we get mathematics, I chose Construction as our next tech since that will make it possible to build both a colloseum and The Great Wall. Culture, gotta have culture...

(3) 10AD - by using mysterious sea-squares in the middle of the ocean as jumpstations, our scouting ships find new landmasses in two parts of the world. Constantinople has grown to size 9, The GL will be finished in 10 at the current rate. Construction in 17 turns, but at a loss of 3gpt, maybe we can sell some old tech for cash to fix that.

(4) 30AD - The new landmasses was really tiny, uninhabited islands.

IBT - our Golden Age ends. :(

(5) 50AD - MM Constantinople to max production, but now the GL will be finished in 12 turns. Construction in 18.

(6) 70AD - Exploring.

(7) 90AD - Exploring.

IBT - The English are building the SoZ.

(8) 110AD - Found Iroquis!
AVS1_110AD-Found_Iroquis.jpg

They are polite, and they're ahead of us in tech! They have Currency anc Construction but they do not have Philosophy, Literature or Polytheism. Of course they will only agree to a
three-for-one and I really do not feel comfortable about giving them Literatur when we still have 9 turns left for the Library. I wait.

IBT - A Spanish galley appear out of the mist and lands a settler/sperman pair exactly where we found the Iroquis!

(9) 130AD - Our dromon head for the mist where the spanish galley came from, to find India! They are behind us in tech. Spain has Currency and Construction and they are willing to sell it for just Monarchy! Since we will get a late start on the Hanging Gardens anyway (and the Mayans are already building it) I accept the deal. We start reserching Code of Laws (10 turns).

(10) 150AD - Mine finished, but it won't get us the Great Library any faster. Since all workable squares are improved, we send the workers to build redundant roads around our colony.

IBT - The Incas start The Hanging Gardens.

(11) 170AD - A dromon spot a new border, we'll try to reach it next turn.

IBT - The Spanish are building The Hanging Gardens. we're running low on cash.

(12) 190AD - Hi Korea! :wavey:
AVS1_190AD-Found_Korea.jpg

They are behind us in tech, that means we're ahead of everybody we've met.

IBT - The Indians are building The Hanging Gardens.

(13) 210AD - We sell Mathematics to Mayas for 86g so we can continue researching a -3gpt.

(14) 230AD - Our dromon spot another border.

IBT - Zulu demand Mathematics, we give him that. Actually I'm kinda surprised how little harrasment we've had to go trough so far. Normally in an OCC, you will never be able to be 4-5 techs ahead of anybody since they will extort you every other turn. I think that it may be very significant that we're on our own island - they have no knowledge of our military.

(15) 250AD - No, the border we saw was just the Spanish.

It's really not easy to show a map that isn't just a lot of black with some trails from our scouting ships on it. The minimap at least gives some idea of what the world looks like:
AVS1_250AD-minimap.jpg

Summary: The Great Library will be finished in 2 turns, but we won't get much from it since we're ahead of everybody with 1-4 techs. Code of Laws in 4 turns and then we'll enter the Middle Ages, getting our free tech. I would also suggest to switch to Monarchy when the GL is finished.

They can't even get to us and we would get war happiness. Don't cave to anyone until at least astronomy and perhaps navigation. We can also, through embassies, get them fighting with someone else. Our island is immune from attack until astronomy so lets manage the tech race and sell to keep them at near parity and fighting amongst themselves.

Yes, I know that they wouldn't be able to hurt us in a war. They probably wouldn't be able to reach us in 20 turns and by then the AI would probably be easy to buy out.

I caved in partly because I had already started selling Mathematics to the others, partly of "old habit" - in an OCC you generally have to be a bootlicker in most situations.

Good point about the war happiness though, I hadn't thought of that. On the other hand it wouldn't have made any difference at all in this special situation, but later on it may be the difference between getting a wonder and losing it.

Lets keep that in mind to the next time.

though of course we will probaly only lose 1-2 turns in anarchy due to OCC. If you want to go Monarchy until Republic is fine with me. Just not during wonder builds. Once in Republic we will probably stay there. We will be getting lux on the cheap once navigation comes in.
BTW - Don't give up contacts once PP is around. We can bounce trade off all of them.

Civ General is busy playing word association games in another forum. He/She has not shown up in the warlord training game that he or she is "hosting" in a week now either. I don't think the interest is there.

Preturn: adjust the science slider to 80%, with CoL due in 4 with +4gpt.

IBT: Koreans start TGW

260:zz

IBT: Constantiople TGL-The Hanging Gardens

270: We contact the French. We are up 3 techs on her.

IBT: Spain demands the Byzantiuan 'hobo' to leave........

280:zz

IB: We learn CoL. We draw Engineering as our free tech. Start Feudalism at max, due in 29. I intend on the AI researching the republic, or get it from the GL.
It appears the Iro and Spainsh have entered the next age as well

290: zz

300:zz

310: zz

320: zz

330: zz

340:zz

Paris completes The Great Wall

350: zz

360: Our curragh contacts the Portugese. We are up 5 visible techs on him.

London completes The Hanging Gardens. Hm, I guess I mis-judged this....

370: Constantiople changes to colosseum, only wastes 20 shields.

IBT: Constantiople grows and completes a colosseum on the same turn. COnstantiople colosseum-lib

380: zz

390:zz

400: zz

Notes: With all the ancient wonders built, we nabbed 5 of them. The cascade has ended. We are up at least 1 tech on every civ.

OCC – 400AD 15 turns to play

Pre-turn – See that we are still Despots! Wow. Will wait for library and then going to monarchy to wait on Republic. No real trade opportunities. We need something for prebuilding. Want the marketplace next though for cash. Don’t know if I would have went Feudalism. The cathedral prebuild for Sistenes, Bachs, Cop and Newton would be nice. I think Mono and Theology should be next. Hopefully the GL will pop Invention and Guns for us.

[1] 410AD – Library builds and I go for barracks to get it out of the way. Gov’t change will cost 4 turns. Arrgh.
[2] 420-
[3] 430-
[4] 440-
[5] 450 – Monarchy. Fuedal in 9 at –6gpt with 67 in the bank. Looks like Izzy took the chump change for a tech and now has 85g. She will give 85g and 5 gpt for eng but I’ll wait for her getting Feudal, hopefully.
[6] 460 – She can now offer 33gpt and all gold. She can’t trade to Hiawatha because he is dead broke. I take the deal. Switched Brax to market. We are at +27gpt and research at 100%.
[7] 470
[8] 480 – England completes the SoZ.
[9] 490 – England gets the Republic. No deals. We can wait.
[10] 500 –
[11] 510-
[12] 520- Market > Granary. Embassy in London for 75g. Not too impressive at 7 spt.
[13] 530- Watched the Mayans and Zulu have a swordfight. Turn down sci-sli with Feudal due next turn.
[14] 540- Mono in 18. Switched production to court to get it earlier for culture. 1000 year bonus still active. In retrospect I should have done that before market.
[15] 550- zzz

Notes – I kinda blew it on the market before court but not too much. All team members should be aware that when world maps pop ours is expensive and not to be given until Navigation. We don’t need them trying to get to our un-occupied island.

Good luck!

Pre-turn: Why are we building a courthouse? Switch to Sun Tzu's.

1 560 AD:

2 570 AD: Shaka demands Literature. I tell him to cram it, so he declares war. We're not afraid of them.

3 580 AD: That was pretty pointless actually since I now see that the Zulus are already fighting the Mayans. And considering that I see a Mayan city with a Zulu name, I think Shaka's losing.

4 590 AD: The Republic pops out of the Great Library. I immediately revolt and draw only a 2-turn anarchy.

5 600 AD: anarchy

6 610 AD: Inca demands Map Making. I kindly tell them to please go die somewhere. They declare war. We're not afraid of you Incas either, Pachacuti!
Anarchy ends and we're now in Republic.

7 620 AD: Spain demands Feudalism. You can cram it too, Izzy. Heh, she backs down. Coward!!

8 630 AD:

9 640 AD:

10 650 AD:

11 660 AD: Whatever GPT deal we had ends and we're now att -11gpt. I don't adjust the slider since Monotheism is only due in 4.

12 670 AD:

13 680 AD:

14 690 AD: Monotheism due next turn, so slider goes down.

15 700 AD: Learn Monotheism. Research set to Invention due in 16 at -1gpt.
Constantinople switched to Cathedral. This wastes 75 shields, but we need the Cathedral more than Sun Tzu's.

Invention research is vetoable. If you want, the next player can switch to Theology if you want to try for Sistene's..
