Sorry I didn't get to the game last night. Had some family business.

Looking forward to seeing what the game entails when I play this evening.

Some questions:

What are the Russians attacking with? Do they have Cossacks yet?

What are the Russians defending with? I'm hoping they don't have riflemen right now, but I may just be dreaming.

Where is our new Palace located on the map? I know it's in Babylon which used to be Grey Jungle River, but I was curious as to which part of the map.

Just curious on those. I'm wondering if we can finish off the Aztecs and then go to different governments. Perhaps with peace and a Democracy we can catch up to and surpass the Russians in tech. Are the Russians that far ahead?

The Russians Have Riflemen, Which means they have Nationalism.

But they don't have Cossaks, that's the good thing.

Well The new capital is placed where Persia and Aztecs once were... thought that we could make a 2nd Production Center, and we were in war with the Russians so I did'nt want to walk to close to them with my Leader. I have already started to settle the southern parts, but we need more settlers.

And of course... the jungle needs to be cleared. But then we have a large new grassland area...

Egads! I'm sorry to be slow once again, but this was a doosey. Boy, we are really in a world of trouble here.

Let's start at the beginning. You'll have to forgive the fact that I didn't even put together a timeline. I'll give you the gist of what went on and hope someone can pull this out of the fire.

When I took over, I made a bunch of changes regarding the city production. Once again, there were a number of cities producing Wealth at size 1 or 2. In fact, there were EIGHT cities set on wealth! A few were building swordsmen as well. Switched them to military because I was going to try to target some Russian cities for destruction and see if we could disrupt them. Then, very quickly, the walls came tumbling down.

The Russians put INFANTRY into the field.

We are still stuck on musketmen. I had to change my thoughts here as cavalry were just not going to "cut it" vs. infantry. I changed production in many cities to produce culture buildings. I'm hoping to increase the culture to keep our boundries give us a nice base when we make a switch to Democracy.

Then I saw where our new capital is. Unfortunately, it's about 8 or so tiles from the Forbidden Palace city of Beijing. I think it's even closer than Babylon was. Also, the huge amount of jungle is making growth very slow and it's tough to get workers from one place to another.

Speaking of workers, I think a bunch of them are set on Automate. They were running all over the map. I tried to catch some, but there are so many I couldn't figure out who was doing what.

Anyway, I stayed in despotism and tried to wait out the time to get to Theory of Gravity. I figured that Magnetism may send us into the next age and give us riflemen at least (with our science civ bonus tech), but that is slow going as well. I tried an ill-fated attempt at a Republic, but that failed and I went back to despotism. In retrospect, I could have tried a Monarchy, but I'm not sure that would have been much better.

Catherine remained furious the whole time with me, and made several demands that I was forced to abide by. She would give me nothing for luxuries, and later even demanded wines which I was force to just give to her.

Then I got to see our gold-per-turn start dropping. Oh, goody. With the new buildings and the super-slow growth of our new capital city area we started seeing a loss, and we had to lower the science rate.

Man, we are in a bad state against the Russians. Here's what I think is our only chance at taking them:

Keep growing our cities that can get us commerce. The workers have been clearing a great deal and Babylon and the surrounding cities are starting to really produce. I've started granaries in the cities around Beijing as well to try to help them grow. I build a lot of new cities during my turns, and I tried to place some near Beijing and Babylon so they can give us a boost right away - even if they do overlap a bit.

Once we have some good cities up and running with commerce, I would switch to Republic if possible. To go for magnetism or democracy is up to the next person after that. Our only hope is to keep the Russians at bay and hope we can catch them with a huge tech push. Perhaps by the time modern armor is in the field we will be their equals and can take them with superior tactics.

The good news here is

1. We have a bunch of new cities and have more land area than the Russians (though this may actually work against us with corruption later.
2. We are still ahead on the histograph. If we hold on, we just may win by that method, though the Russians are getting cranky.

Sorry that I couldn't do more. I trust in the next players to help reverse our situation.

Enjoy.

I'll see what I can do... in retrospect, we should have played against more Civs to curb computer expansion but oh well.

1635: We trade military tradition to Russia for Theory of Gravity, world map, 20 gold per turn and 40 gold. This does allow them to make Cossacks but since they already have infantry, I think Cossacks are the least of our concerns and besides; it leads to us actually making money. Beijing produces an army.

1640: We sign a MPP and RoP with Russia for our world map and 70 gold. It will help improve our relations with Russia and it makes them a little less likely to attack us. It seems like our Calvary are going to waste, so I decide to use them to finish off the Aztecs. The city of New Nineveh is established. I have disbanded two warriors and two swordsmen, since they are now worthless.

1645: The city of New Ashur has been established. I saw part of Russia’s army and while we could take this force (30 units), they seem to have more where that came from. Russia is blocking our troops from advancing towards the Aztecs; maybe letting them survive isn’t a bad idea.

1650-1655: City improvements.

1660: Russia is building Shakespeare’s Theatre… unless we can figure out a way to attack the Russians and extort technologies or some other way to get ahead of them; we are not in a pretty position. The city of New Gillipi was created. I pondered attacking the standing force of the Russian military, we could definitely take them but I doubt we could dislodge their infantry.

1665: We trade Ivory to the Russians for 36 gold per turn.
1670: City improvements.

1675: The city of New Akkad was created.

1680: We sell our world map to the Aztecs for their world map, 1 gold per turn and 3 gold.

Well, things are not looking good. We seem to have overextended ourselves and unless we want to do something drastic to reduce corruption, maybe “donating” corrupt cities to the Aztecs and figure out some way to get back into the tech race, which will most likely involve war, we can kiss this game good bye. I really don’t know what to say to the next leader but try to reduce corruption and you can try attacking the Russians but pick your sports wisely because we cannot sustain a prolonged war.

Hey, Silverblade, now come play the other succession game you are signed up for, gj on this one though..
thanx :goodjob:

Sorry Arathorn, I'm trying to get some screen shots up but when I try to post them I'm getting the message that it's too large a file. Urgh.

For the team: With 3 civs would this game even be possible to win via a diplomatic route? Figure the Russians may end up building the United Nations. Would the Aztecs even get a vote? I'm not entirely sure how the whole voting thing works - I've yet to have one in any of my own games. In a desperate bid, we could give the Aztecs some territory. This could get them large enough to vote while making them super nice toward us at the same time. A nice thought about keeping them alive for the duration.

Keep an eye on the Aztecs for tech as well. Don't know if they're getting it from the Russians or researching on their own, but they seem to come up with tech every so often. Before I ended my turns, I traded for Music Theory with them.

Let's not give up on this one. I think it can still be won! These games are certainly more interesting than cakewalks - though they can be a bit stressful too.

I'm posting a picture right away...

Well it's Gonzo's Turn right?

I think that if we don't want russia to win a diplomatic win we have to be real good freinds with the Aztecs or destroy the Aztecs... but remember they have a Mpp with Russia.

Actually, the MPP between the Aztecs and Russians must have run out. It was not in effect when I played my turns.

Hmmm.....

In all of the games of Civ3 I've played so far, I've never had a UN vote. I've either cancelled the option, built it myself and blocked the vote, or won/lost before it was built.

I'm guessing, however, that we would need the Aztecs' vote in order to win. Otherwise, wouldn't it be us vs. the Russians with each voting for themsleves? Again, I've never done the vote thing, so I don't know.

I'm not even sure what qualifies a civ to vote. My limited understanding is that the civ that built the UN is automatically included (the Russians it would seem if it does get built) along with civs that meet a certain criteria regarding land controlled or amount of territory or something like that.

Assuming this is the case (and it's a large assumption - I'm likely totally wrong) we'd have to help the Aztecs out a bit. If we had to, we could give the Aztecs all of our cities in the southeast "bulb" and even the ones that surround their capital if it would give them enough territory to qualify to vote. With such a huge gift, they would certainly like us quite a bit as well and may swing the process to our favor.

No matter what, I think we should keep them in the game. We don't need to add their cities to our empire, and they could occaisionally come up with some tech that we could trade for. Think they'll forget about all that "war stuff"?

Any other thoughts from the team (perhaps the correct method of how the UN vote is done)?

I agree with Kev that the best route would be to give the Aztecs the cities in the southeast, they are likely massively corrupt and aside from any cities that may have luxuries they are useless. Though giving them a city with a luxury would be a way to make the Aztecs like us really quick. I may also give them a few of our more corrupt cities on the mainland, since they will eventually assimilate back to us anyway and we also don't have to deal with the lost profits. As it stands, we will not be able to win a war against the Russians. We have enough to take out their attack force but their cities are guarded by multiple infantry, which as we all know is not easily dislodged by calvary. We would have to bomard any prospective cities to hell with cannons and hope that we get lucky with our attacks. I personally favor the buttering up the Aztecs notion because, we could build them up to a point that we could extort any profits that they make, without incurring the losses.

My experience tells me that there is no criteria to vote, only to become the one you votes on... the first votable nation is the one who has The Un Building, the second one is the one with the largest territory / most citizens. But every other civ can vote.

And if there is only 2 Civs, no one can win because there must be a majority vote.

I will start playing the game now... if Gonzo posts quickly he can stop me...

Right now I am pretty sure that the Aztecs hate both us and the Russians, so we will need to start off with some major damage control. Firstly, I would give them most of the cites around their capital. I would however, keep the city near the wines and the coast, we should build a harbor their and use it to establish a luxury trade route with the Aztecs. The rest of the cities they can have and that should provide them with a decent income. After that, I would try to get them up to par with us on techs, they are lagging behind us right now but if we catch them up, we can use them to develop lower level techs from us and we can probably get 20 to 30 more gold per turn, which would help us increase our own research. We should leave it like that for a while but make sure to pay them a tribute of a map or gold every once in a while. They will probably remain furious with us for a while but after we prove ourselves to be good friends and trading partners, their image of us should improve. We could also look into giving them the former Chinese cities to the east of Russia but right now there are too many valuable resources there. We could give them a spare city or two but that will be the next leaders discression. Also, if we build the Aztecs up just enough they will give us an ally, if we ever go to war with Russia. They probably won't be much of an offensive threat but they will demand attention and they could force Russia into a two front war but that is more or less an emergency plan.

Well, It looks like im up, but i don't know if i stopped grey fox. I will wait for recognition beofre my next turn :)

Well I already started Playing, but you can play after me Gonzo...
