Backlash against the backlash

.This is because the only people using this phrase are far-right ideologues.

I mean, this really isn't true on any level. Far-right ideologues mostly embrace identity politics, e.g. Richard Spencer calls himself an "identitarian" - that's white identity politics though, which is a whole 'nother thing. It's true that it's only various sorts of reactionaries who use "identity politics" as a boogeyman, but that includes everyone from "far right" figures like James Woods to respectable liberal "centrists" like Jonathan Chait.

Anyone remember when Civ would "Overruled by the Senate! Action cancelled" you when you tried to start a war?

Finally a Civ reference I get. Democracy sucked big time in Civ II because the UN and legislative bodies wouldn't always let you just run over the other civs. Fundamentalism was always worth the science penalty.

plus you got those cheap "Fundamentalist" cannon fodder units to zerg your opponents with

Those units could be annoying when you captured an AI city and they would appear on almost every open square, but yeah, good fodder.

If you cover the map with Fanatics, then the partisans never have a chance to spawn. Although towards the end of the game when you have more howitzers than you know what to do with, it can be fun to mop them up :D

Let's go into more detail...if by "damage" you're referring to white people getting butthurt, you will need to try again, because I frankly don't care about Becky with the bad grades or her feelings

This is the issue I am talking about:

a) you have zero insight into the concern
b) you can only hand-wave insults

So, in essence, you have zero ability to move the conversation forwards. You'll be in the corner yelling, and anyone who even the least bit wants to have a conversation only pulls you out to shout down the rightwing idiots ... and that's the extent of your usefulness.

Your insight is as useful as a person complaining about BLM defending criminals ... basically none.

You're talking about "Partisans", which yeah they were annoying as all hell, unless you, as @metalhead suggests, spam cheap units all around to block them from spawning... I actually liked them in the sense that they helped with immersion... its was a cool idea... the unhappy residents taking to the hills to resist the invaders. :D

As an aside... I did the same thing you did at first... confusing the Partisans unit in my mind with the Fanatics unit. Which is interesting to me, because when you look at the artwork of the Partisans, they look like the terrorists you see in the ISIS propaganda videos and we always hear those guys described as "religious Fundamentalists"... but in Civ 2 "Fundamentalism" gets you the Fanatic unit, which looks more like a guy in Moses robes with a torch, which I think is supposed to look more like a religious fundamentalist fanatic... I just found that amusing and wanted to share :)

Also... are we (CivFanatics) named after the "Fanatics" unit??

If I'm not mistaken, when I first joined, the Civ II Fanatics unit was part of the site's title graphic.

EDIT: yep!

When fanatics attacked though they had a modern machine gun sound, so they obviously have uzis hidden under their robes.

Democracy was by far the best government in civ2, you just had to rex like crazy early so you didn't need war. But getting rid of all corruption was amazing. And then the most game breaking trick in civ2 was to abuse we love the president days. If you were republic or democracy every turn a city was we love status their population would grow by 1 as long as they had food. So what I would do was on deity you just spam settlers til you have a ton of space, like 20 cities, tech to republic asap, turn luxury slider as high as it'll go and grow all your cities to size 20. Then you have such a huge advantage you can't lose.

Corruption was such a huge pita in those games, it's another really awesome thing about 4, switching to maintenance system which was far less annoying.

I do find it amazing that all of us old men can remember that much about a game that was released over 20 years ago.
But it was so easy to beat the game at deity after just a few time playing. I remember the IV developers taking up the challenge of creating a deity level that would be almost impossible to defeat. While they didn't succeed, it took awhile before people were beating it "easily" :D

I guess we should get back on topic before.......

Not for nothing, my sig includes a link to my write-up of a Civ III OCC win on deity :D

It has to be pointed out that this "extent of usefulness" is something that can't generally be done without. Fascism has never just sat down, it has always had to be put down.

So question for everyone - is it time yet to condone punching Nazis, or do we need to wait until we reach a particular body count first?
