At this point I have to say I'm bemused at reading so many posts by people who have never actually played with a Barbie.
The thing about girls getting baby doll-type dolls in order to simulate becoming mothers (since that's what was expected of girls) is that Barbie is also about 'teaching' girls to be domestic - in a different way. I have the copious number of furniture and doll house patterns to show for that. You can make everything from fake food on plates on a table to the whole house/condo/castle itself.
One thing I have to laugh about with the references to "flat feet"... There have been flat-feet Barbies for decades. Those are the Skipper/Fluff dolls. They always wore ballerina flats, flat boots, and flat sandals. These are 50-year-old dolls (hard to believe I got my first Barbie that long ago).
Then came the Francie dolls, with slightly arched feed that were designed to wear low-heeled shoes. Francie couldn't wear flats, but at least the feet weren't designed for high stiletto styles. One interesting thing is that some of these older dolls had a point of articulation in the ankle that let their feet be flatter or pointier. Modern dolls don't have that.
