Barbie Movie Discussion (Spoilers)

shoeonhead liked the movie & saw it as somewhat ironic (or anyway claims she thinks it was made somewhat ironically)

My gf is curious so I'll watch w her @ a later date when I can watch for free
I’ve noticed, at least on YouTube, that the Barbie movie has become a Rorschach test. Some people are calling it woke feminist garbage while others are praising it as anti-woke by citing the plight of Ken and his oppression under the matriarchy. It’s starting to show cracks in the “get woke, go broke” meme since I’m going to bing on some old AVGN vids.

Pretty sure it was designed w everyone's triggers in mind and left open to many interpretations and endless debate and back and forth as that's what drives engagement in the internet age.

I'm seen similar takes on fight club (people praising it from opposite sides)

Get woke go broke isn't real. It's never been real. It's never going to be real.

I mean the right-wing admiration for fight club is just them completely missing the point of the movie because for some reason they can never understand satire or subtext and don't get that Tyler Durden isn't supposed to be a good guy.

He's kind of an overreaction to the subservience and lack of defining ethics of the main character at the start but of course for most people the opposite of bad ethics is usually also bad ethics.

I'm surprised right wingers like the movie as the ending was almost communist

I tend to listen to the author's perspective most of all. But Barbie wasn't a book adaptation it's pure fantasy capitalism, probably more like a Simpsons episode w many people contributing to authorship and lots of screebtesting

I’m not sure if you read it correctly, I specifically stated “It’s starting to show cracks in the ‘get woke, go broke’ meme” followed by my disinterest with said meme. No where in my post did I say that “Get woke, go broke” is real nor did I voiced a desire to have it be real. All I expressed in my post is that I’m seeing the cracks happening within the meme itself.

I mean saying "starting to show cracks" is kind of an implication of it being real, but fair enough

(also I'm just paraphrasing a joke from Yugioh Abridged)

How inspiring, no matter who you are or where you live or what color your skin Mattel wants to sell you some overpriced plastic.

Well not whoever you are. Don't expect homeless barbie anytime soon, no money in that demographic

At this point I have to say I'm bemused at reading so many posts by people who have never actually played with a Barbie.

The thing about girls getting baby doll-type dolls in order to simulate becoming mothers (since that's what was expected of girls) is that Barbie is also about 'teaching' girls to be domestic - in a different way. I have the copious number of furniture and doll house patterns to show for that. You can make everything from fake food on plates on a table to the whole house/condo/castle itself.

One thing I have to laugh about with the references to "flat feet"... There have been flat-feet Barbies for decades. Those are the Skipper/Fluff dolls. They always wore ballerina flats, flat boots, and flat sandals. These are 50-year-old dolls (hard to believe I got my first Barbie that long ago).

Then came the Francie dolls, with slightly arched feed that were designed to wear low-heeled shoes. Francie couldn't wear flats, but at least the feet weren't designed for high stiletto styles. One interesting thing is that some of these older dolls had a point of articulation in the ankle that let their feet be flatter or pointier. Modern dolls don't have that.

I played with my sisters barbies but kinda got banned.

Old GI Joe's for example tended to have encounters with fire crackers, petrol, hammers, tennis rackets etc. One got deep frozen.

You can't realistically have an intricate plot in a game when the number of dolls/soldiers/other are limited due to being so ridiculously large. It's one of the reasons I hated the he-man toys - which were still not as large as barbies.
Just give me an infinite collective of playmobil, enough cannon fodder for any genocidal plot.

You've never seen the 18" Barbies? I have two of them sitting on a shelf behind me as I type.

Those weren't meant to be played with, though. As far as I know, there are no furniture patterns for that size, nor are their knees articulated so they can even sit down. They were designed purely for fashion (dresses only, as I've never found extra shoes for them), hairstyling, and makeup.

Those are the dolls I made underwear for, since my grandmother got obsessed about it.

That didin't stopped children from having their own adventures a-la Toy Story's Andy.

Imo the movie isn't the problem, but it's certainly not serious how so much money was made on the web from dumb commentary on the movie. I do wonder if the majority of those people just pretend a Barbie movie (or most other movies, tbh) is going to present intelligent views on social/political topics.

I might check out a couple of review channels. There's one where a therapist and a moviemaker react to "relationship" movies. Their take on the parent-child dynamic of Dune was laughably ridiculous. Ooh, they loved how supportive Paul Atreides' parents were - if Paul doesn't want to be the Duke of Caladan, all he ever has to be is Leto's son, cue the dozens of violins... I wonder what they'll say about the next movie when it becomes clear that Jessica is NOT a model for responsible motherhood.

Obviously these two may be good at their day jobs. But understanding some of the movies they watch, nope. So I wonder what their take on this Barbie movie will be.

I don't really have any interest in the meme or the term "woke", but for anyone that does (not saying you), I don't see how a Barbie movie that gives an empowering message to women/girls could remotely be deemed "woke". Barbie is already inherently themed towards that message, whereas the typical "woke" criticism is about putting that message where it just doesn't fit & undermines the story. There's no race-swapping going on (much less gender-swapping of course) in Barbie. Barbie isn't a "Girl Boss" who beats up other characters & in a Barbie-focused movie you'd expect her to be the main character.

There's no other hero for her to undermine & Barbie should "win" in a movie called Barbie. I'm just curious how anyone could see a movie like Barbie falling into any of the typical "woke" characteristics.

Barbie avoids the worst tropes of "woke" movies. Basically the woke aspects are weaponised to hide bad writing and if you don't like it you're an ist of sone description.

Woke movies and entertainment have their time and place just don't be to surprised if you add it to everything you get a flop basically by failing to appeal to anyone.

What are the woke aspects?

What are the woke aspects?

Its basically a feminist movie targeted at women. Also mocks feminism along with everything else.

My main takeaway extremism bad make world better but it will take time. Ymmv.
