I finally saw this movie for the first time yesterday. Why is it popular?

^Your disapproval of BR will go out, vanish, like tears in the rain?

PS: i haven't seen the film... :) RH did some crap films too though, one i had the ill-fortune to watch was his blind japanese samurai meme one. Zatoichi iirc.

I think it's the atmosphere and tone more than the plot. Perhaps it's aged more than other movies.

BR has influenced so many other things that watching it now might seem...what would be the word for it in English...I guess bland as you say. Many of it's themes, man's power and abuse over the natural world, megacorps, ethics of bioengineering and philosophical questions of memory and identity probably seem like tired tropes nowaday. I watched the Final Cut myself and I really enjoyed it for what it is, for a film coming out in 1982 I would have loved it to bits myself if I was alive back then.

Which cut did you watch?
Theatrical. Did I do it wrong?

Definitely had a cool visual aesthetic. FTL travel, and "it's not execution, it's retirement!" (then to be referenced once) so unnecessary. Also the main character narrating like a detective novel I guess was part of its original charm, but had me laughing for the wrong reasons.

It depends who you ask. Some people say that the theatrical cut is better, because the narration makes it a true film noir. Others say the director's cut is better, because it changes the ending and adds in a new sequence. The final cut is the director's cut but cleaned up a bit.

I know it's based on some other sci fi novel but it reminds me a lot of caves of steel and asimov robot novels.

Anyway it's aged a bit but it's still pretty cool if you like those kinds of movies. But basically people like it.

I enjoy a lot of movies with awful rotten tomatoes scores like Exodus Gods and Kings, Noah, just watched Supernova the other day and thought the ending sucked but the rest was fine. And then other movies people love I can't stand like Inglorious Bastards comes to mind.

As for why people like it, the original author has had a huge influence on science fiction and the way we view the genre in a pop culture context, not to mention infusing the human consciousness with a lot of interesting ideas. So even before we begin looking at the movie, there's that.

On top of that the movie is visually stunning and rather interesting when you compare it to other movies released during that time period. It sticks out quite a bit. It has also influenced a lot of movies that came out afterwards.

On top of all that the story and movie are a bit "heady" - and not just flashy entertainment for the sake of being flashy.

So to conclude - it is popular because a lot of people like it. And people like it for a variety of reasons.

That sounds better. When I'm ready to try again, I'll do that.

So you are the One person who liked Supernova? :)

When I think of Blade Runner I barely remember what is actually going on in the movie, but fondly remember the beginning of the movie with all that darkish style. I also vaguely recall being disappointed with the movie.
Reminds me a bit of Escape from New York. The movie is very 80s-style meh forgettable trashy. But the beginning is absolutely amazing and stylish.

From what I gather. I mean let's not go crazy, it's not even my top 100 I'm sure but it wasn't bad.

Good goodness, Trump it up a little man!

Its a great movie. One of the best. Ok ? The critics. The Oscars ? Didn't win an Oscar, but a great movie! In that class ok ? The acting ? Space. Good movie, for what it is. Great movie.

In my current obsession with everything Aliens and Predator, I recently discovered that Blade Runner and the Alien movies apparently exist within the same fictional universe.
