Bloomberg's 50 Best American Cities

D.C. drivers are insane, which is understandable since the traffic gridlock would drive most men to sociopathy. The only transportation in D.C. that doesn't suck is the buses.

Salt Lake city was nice when I passed through there earlier this year, but from what I can tell, they have no public transportation. I didn't even see one bus (I'm sure they have buses, but not like Las Vegas has). The traffic there was horrible.

I am biased of course, but I think Las Vegas is a great place to live.
Not only does SLC have a pretty nice bus system, it also has a light rail, which is pretty unusual for a city its size in the US. They set it up for the Olympics, and it makes getting around the actual city pretty easy. Plus, making everything a grid system makes it hard to get lost.

The highway traffic does suck, since there is pretty much just one highway in the entire freaking state.

the subway is disgusting
Say what you will about Metro's delays (common) and crowds (constant), but I don't think you can say its disgusting, at least if you compare it to any other American subway system. That's the only place where people are actually diligent about keeping you from eating. I used to live in DC and I thought the cleanliness of their trains was about all they had going for it.

violent crime and theft are common
In certain parts. It's actually a lot better than it was maybe 10 years ago.

the traffic is the worst in the nation
Its got to be up there. Forget the Beltway, just driving IN DC is pretty terrifying, with all the roundabouts and guys with diplomatic immunity so they give exactly zero ****s about traffic laws.
Plus our aquarium sucks, anybody in their right mind would just drive an hour to get to Baltimore's.
Yes, the DC aquarium is horrible.
Blech, the one thing I really hated about D.C. was "un-walkable" it was. Everything in the downtown was so far apart, it was obnoxious to try and get to more than one monument a day. Probably the biggest mistake my family made on vacation there was not to rent a car to drive around in, instead opting to walk everywhere.

Yes, I agree with this too. Get a bike.

I take the subway every day to Farragut North and the bottom of my pants are frequently covered in this black grimy crap.

Well obviously SF is in the right spot at #1.:mischief: As for DC, DC's metro system is actually pretty clean compared to other cities, and it goes a fair amount of places. There is a good number of restaurants, there is a healthy contingent of young well to do professional types living there, there are some really cool neighborhoods with great food, and you always have fresh blood coming into the city since it's DC and it's a magnet for good jobs. Overall, it's a great place and worthy of top 5 IMHO.

LA is certainly in the right spot below Cleveland no doubt. And Oaktown is higher than San Jose because San Jose is boooooooring while Oakland is cool and fun. And cheap!

Dude, Cleveland has one of the best orchestras in North America, if not the world. It has a very good regional art museum, a world class university that brings in exceptional speakers and community events, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one of the midwest's best newspapers and some fantastic old architecture. Cleveland has a lot of cool history actually!

Nah, Pittsburgh crushes you guys actually in a lot of areas. :p :)

I always wanted to live in either Las Vegas or San Diego, but I do agree with the "vast sea of garbage with islands of awesome comment" in regards to Los Angeles...

Escape from LA is pretty accurate in the regards of what would happen if LA fell into anarchy...it'd just be a bunch of gangs...

Can someone print the rest of the list, I'm curious where my city falls in that. I click the article, but it doesn't list the cities.

My city isn't that great, but to me it is. I wouldn't move here if you have kids though, our schools suck. And the kids here are so corrupted. From what I heard, kids now days say all kinds of dirty language in schools. We never did that in my day. I'm not sure if this is just a Vegas thing, or kids all over the country talk about sex and porn. Not a good place to raise kids. But if you are reasonably smart, you can make money here. And there's plenty to do.

Our crime rate is real bad, but it's mostly just robberies and stuff. Our murder rate isn't real bad. With common sense, you can avoid most crime.

MAJOR CITIES NOT RANKED:
Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Louisville, Boise, Miami, Orlando, Newark, Baton Rouge, El Paso, Sacramento, Birmingham, Des Moises. SLC and Louisville are the most surprising to me.

Thanks for showing the whole list.

I'm most familiar with the north-east, but I'm surprised that neither New Haven nor Hartford made the cut.

It's funny that LA is lower on the list than Anchorage - I've been to Anchorage (but not LA) and I'm surprised it's there at all. I found it to be a depressing swath of strip-mall carelessly splotched onto a gorgeous landscape. Anchorage would be beautiful without all the Anchorage.

Both of those cities are too small I think. It appears that only cities with populations of at least 200,000 were considered.

Are you kidding me? Mid-size cities and towns and far better living places that huge metropolitan areas. How is NO ranked above Madison?

I guess they don't put much emphasis on environmental factors, cost of living, average education level, etc and too much emphasis on stuff like nightlife which probably only 20-30% of people care about. And serisouly? DC that high? The city itself would drag it down far further, even if you count the surrounding suburbs.

1) It appears that it doesn't actually count the suburbs, only the city proper (which is why Scottsdale and Arlington are on the list. Both are really just giant suburbs)

2) Average educational level and environmental factors are actually both part of the formula, but it is patently obvious that cost of living is not.

May be part of it, but obviously not as important to them as "culture" and "nightlife". Crime doesn't seem to be that important either because DC would not rank that high.
