The point is that this historian comparing slavery in the US to farm workers in England probably wasn't to show that slavery wasn't all that bad. It was to show that workers in England were also mistreated in some comparable ways. That the attitudes of employers in England were somewhat comparable to those of slave owners in the South.

I also suspect that when historians make such comparisons that they have some point they are trying to make. That they aren't just reciting facts they think are related to the subject matter. YMMV.

Granted, if it isn't a children's book they typically don't beat the reader over the head moralizing. But the morals which they are emphasizing are usually quite evident. I seriously doubt this particular historian thought highly of either group of exploiters. But that is just a guess since I haven't read the book. But then again, you don't find too many historians these days who try to rationalize slavery.

Flawless victory.

I'm already past it. Apology accepted. Just trying to help you out. There are forums I refer to as "link war zones" that I don't frequent. This isn't one of them. A one liner opinion with a link that might or might not in some way amplify it doesn't interest me, and generally around here seems to cause more problems than it solves. YOUR opinion interests me, even if I don't agree with it, but it needs to be expressed here, by you.
Hell yes.

Yeah and it's even worse when the entire OP is a single sentence and a link or giant wall of text quote. I don't even engage those anymore and I don't know if traffic is down or what but those kinds of posts seem to be becoming either more common or more noticeable due to lower post count overall.

They have been multiplying of late. We seem to have gone from one regular poster with that style to three.

One
Two
Three :vomit:

From one of the new 'why the Left is Evil' threads:

[Cultural Marxism] is based on Marx's theory that the dominant social paradigm deserves derision. Marx saw contemporary societ as a Circus, an endless parade of distraction manipulated by the ringmaster, feeding out Animal Crackers to the unwitting rubes.

One need not look far to see the perils of Marxism. Anyone who has spent A Night in Casablanca knows of its dangers. A society run by Marx would turn our dearly held social values on their heads. No longer would we be peaceably able to enjoin A Day at the Races, A Night at the Opera, or even Room Service without the consent interference of Marx or one of his brothers.

You might think this is just vapid fear-mongering amounting to no more substance than Horsefeathers. You ignore it at your danger. Consider, when faced with Marx, would you Bet Your Life?

Two favorites from long ago:

“I'd gladly die if it meant stopping abortion forever in America, but I'm not going to support taxing the American people over it.”

“I could, if I wanted to, do something so absolutley currently, and personally repugnant, begin to will myself to love George Bush, and then find him sexually attractive.”

I consider being posted here by JR to be a singular honor. Unfortunately I doubt that actual Republicans would grasp the nuances.

I keep meaning to bump this thread because there are a lot of eligible posts. Like this one:

attackfighter is like the coyote with his plan to intellectually "gotcha" the left catch and eat Road Runner. Road Runner runs around not bothering to speak Wile E's language, but understands exactly what the coyote is trying to do, all the while dancing around him.

Coyote keeps opening up these threads with another attempt at cleverly "getting to the bottom of the real issues", trying to point out hypocrisies etc and his Road Runner will stop to eat the "free bird seed" in his bait thread but somehow Wile E attackfighter never wins....

Link because you can't properly quote locked threads.

Cheers you two, and Jackal, I'm thinking about it. Short answer, it's one part of your mind, provided by a brain "muscle" that understands things in categorical narratives so as to sort and assist simulating reality. Like a muscle, it has more use the stronger it is. But if you strengthen it too much without strengthening its opposing muscle and its supporting muscles, and you fail to stretch it, you get bent out of shape and risk injury.

Intuitively, I felt like you were talking about the part of our brain which is responsible for forming a coherent self narrative, yet I wanted to make sure, because my intuition is not infallible.
