Ah, it seems we were a little too hasty in our approach. Yes, we wouldn't want a war or anything such as that springing up. We shall leave you be, if you wish to forget this incident.

You have killed American sailors, under questionable pretenses. Nations have gone to war for much less then that. We expect an explanation, if not reparations for our losses.

Are you ready to join our more perfect Union? We have already planned all the appropriate bureaucratic moves, to make this as smooth as possible. We can finally join as one.

What do you say?

It seems your people have been responsible for the deaths of more than a few sailors of various nationalities. We, like the rest of the world, demand an explanation, for these heinous attacks on our merchant nationals, and on our soldiers and ships.

Good to know. I'll scale it back to the Nobility and Bourgeoisie.

Obviously your navy is the most superior in all the world and our is not that great, we wish to ask that you pass on some of your naval knowledge to our people so that we don't have another loss like we just had. Would you be willing to pass some of that knowledge onto us?

The recent incident in Flanders seems to us like just one more example of Dutch agression.

Your help in this hard war against the Protestant Alliance shall never be forgotten. Some of our best engineers will travel to your lands so that they may learn of this new technology.

Your behaviour must end now. You have killed Spanish people without cause. You have killed missionaries without cause. You have enslaved our people. This is your only chance: release our people right now and open your borders or suffer the wrath of God.

Your behaviour must end. You have killed the Catholics of your nation for some psycothic reason. Desist on your murderous behaviour and allow Christians to worship God freely, or you shall see what happens to the enemies of God.

As time passes, you must have surely noticed how the size of your folly increases, for not only you have lost many battles, but you have also lost much land, and the superiority of our armies and navies is unquestionable.

The Emperor could have demanded that the war went on, and have our soldiers fight until you lost everything besides your homelands. However, the Emperor, magnanimous as he is, is willing to offer your nations peace, a just peace to end this war.

For this, Carlos V, Emperor of Holy Spain and all of its colonies, wishes to offer your nations the following peace treaty:
- Spain will leave the Catholic League and return the British West Indies, the Dutch West Indies and Jamaica to its owners.
- The United Kingdom will cede to Spain its possessions of Bermuda and Bahamas and renounce to them, as well as return the Spanish possessions in India and pay 20 EP.
- The Republic of the Netherlands will pay 30 EP in reparations.
- The Kingdom of Sweden will pay 20 EP in reparations, as well as open their markets to Spain.

Let it be known that we could have asked for much more, but that the Emperor's compassion is also part of his might, and thus he was willing to accept these lenient terms. Should any of you choose to continue the fight, the Emperor also wishes to make it known that we are willing to sign a separate peace with those nations that wish to stop the fight.

Yours faithfully,
Don Francisco de Paula Martínez de la Rosa
Presidente del Consejo de Ministros de Su Majestad el Emperador Carlos V

This is our official declaration of war. As the Pope continuously shuns our requests for a formal investigation into the Venetian incident we have no choice but to back our brave allies in liberating the Venetian people.

Calm down, gentlemen. There is no need to escalate this war. Spain thinks it is time for this war to end, and for representatives of all nations to sit down and discuss this in a civilized manner.

- The Republic of the Netherlands will pay 30 EP in reparations.
The Republic can agree to these terms and officially signs peace with Spain and the rest of the Catholic League.

We will agree to release Spanish missionaries and immigrants, on two conditions: 1)Spain forbids their missionaries and people from entering Aztec land (with Spanish traders being the exception) and 2) Spain engages in limited trade with the Aztec Empire to provide us with supplies from the Western world.

We have attempted to provide evidence to the Pope so he can open a formal investigation, but he chose to side with the Austrians who provided scant excuse. Milan will not stand for this. All the Pope had to do was open an investigation into the matter, a real investigation, and Milan would have stayed out of the war.

Perhaps you can get through to the Pope. I sincerely hope you can and wish you the best of luck.

Although we would wish for you to finally see the light and accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour, we believe that saving our people is far more important than saving your souls. We would like for you to allow Spanish preachers to enter your lands, with the proviso that they will not preach the True Word of God to your people, but to our merchants.

King Mikhail II sat on his throne, rubbing his temples. These past few years had given him quite the headache. Every couple of days nobles wrote to him, or appealed to him in person, protesting the land reforms. While the amount of lands taken caused minimal damage to the nobles' monetary standing, they continued to insist that it was a massive slap in the face. And after each complaint, Mikhail thought that that's maybe what the nobility needed for their incessant whining. At least the peasants seemed quite about their scruples.

However, things weren't all glum and criticism. Some dissenters had been caught in the Seminary. Their plans had fizzled, but it seemed a bit risky to let them out anytime soon. A few "accidents" will happen, and they will unfortunately be found the victim of inmate brutality. And with the land reform came a small bit of support from the tiny middle class. Perhaps the reforms would be extended to the lower classes...

As Mikhail pondered this, he noticed a messenger holding out a message. Mikhail quickly snapped it up and read its contents out loud.

"Novgorodians have continued raiding into Muscovite lands. The Muscovite army has repulsed these invaders in force. Novgorodian troops set up fortifications were set up in Muscowy, but were overwhelmed by the Muscovite army. Both sides have suffered substantial casualties. Muscowy lost approximately 4 brigades, while Novgorod lost twice as many men."

The Queen did a spit take as she listened to the casualties.

"Do these Russians not know that the famine is over?" Mikhail asked, laughing, yet having a look of bewilderment on his face. "Novgorod breaks from the Church, raids into Muscowy, and Muscovite spies are being captured in Novgorod reporting troop movements! I simply can't rap my head around this barbarity!"

The messenger gulped.

"Your Highness, I would like to also inform you that the King of Novgorod has repaired his break with the Church."

"So, you're telling me he has rejoined his Orthodox brethren in faith, yet also insists on meeting them on the battlefield? It doesn't surprise me. These Russians.... They driving me to old age. Raid this. Destroy that. Treachery and madness all around. They have to fight their subjects on a regular basis just to maintain control."

"W-well Muscowy now also has a new classical engineering school that shou-"

"I don't give a damn about that! What good is it to look like the Romans if you can't act like them too?"

Mikhail sighed. He needed a break from the news.

"Dmitry, you're in charge of receiving messages from now on. I expect them summarized and filtered for aggravating news. If I so much as catch wind of something that I don't find to my liking, you'll find yourself in a grave position.

............

2 weeks later, Dmitry was dead, hanging from the gallows with a message jammed in his mouth. It was a report on the progress of Muscovite forts along the Novgorodian border.
