CFC OT History

So I got bored and started looking at CFC OT threads from the very beginning, and I find the old CFC OT very interesting. One of the big things I noticed was that pre-9/11, OT wasn't really that political. After 9/11 though, is when OT became extremely political.

I also found it interesting that in the early days, alot of people thought this forum wouldn't last,since apparently there was a huge exodus of members from late 2000 to mid 2001. They were so worried about the future of the forum and here we are in 2012, still going strong.

Anyway, looking back at the history of this forum shows what an interesting, diverse, and clearly insane community we are part of.

That's an interesting observation. Another place that I hung out at around the time of 9/11 got a huge difference after that as well. Though it had political before that, it got much uglier afterwards.

As the only forum I really frequent, I'm often surprised when I find ghost boards. I guess we have just the right mixture of loathe and love to sustain a community.

Why did I ever come here? I only wanted Civ III mods and here I am.

Anyways, I've looked at old CFC before, and it was a hell of a lot more spammy than it is now. Also the formatting is kind of strange without the auto-quotes.

Truth is, people don't really change much. The world changed around us. What you saw in OT back then (I wasn't a member at the time) was merely the average member's reaction to very dramatic world-changing events. Normal people should be expected to react abnormally to abnormal things.

Anyway, looking back at the history of this forum shows what an interesting, diverse, and clearly insane community we are part of.

Insanity is what average people call genius when they don't understand it.

If we have anything that could be considered a dead or dying forum, that would be it. I'd love to do something to bring some life back to it, but I don't know what we could do.

That's true of the whole world, really. Finding out that history isn't over will do that to you.

I get the feeling there was a bit more activity circa late 2009 when I got more involved here compared to today, it isn't a massive drop in new threads but I can feel the difference.
Still there are some quality, quality posters here whose contributions put mine to shame so I stay here for them and for some other activities.

OT consistently has a decent number of interesting, intelligent people with quite a few different backgrounds and experiences. I've learned a lot from the lurking and occasional posting I've done since roughly 2005. It certainly has some ignorant and/or belligerent posters, but they're dealt with fairly effectively for the most part. For any flaws CFC OT has, I've never found a forum I like as much as this one.

This is curious, since one of the most common critique of OT (usually coming from the Right) is that it seems there are too many people with the same views/ideologies.
