A child protection official for the Catholic Church has been caught with 4,000 pictures of child porn.

Father-of-four Christopher Jarvis was arrested after uploading pictures of children being abused to a website.

Married Jarvis, 49, a former social worker, was employed by the church following sex scandals about pervert priests.

His job was to monitor church groups to ensure paedophiles did not gain access to children in the church’s congregations.

But he was caught by police in March with more than 4,000 child porn images on his home computer and his work laptop.

He admitted 12 counts of *making, possessing and distributing indecent images when he appeared before magistrates in Plymouth and is likely to face jail when he returns to court for sentencing next month.

Jarvis, who has been sacked from his job as child safeguarding officer, worked the Diocese of Plymouth for nine years.

Church spokesman David Pond said: “Mr Jarvis was suspended from his position as soon as the diocese became aware in March of the police investigation.

“The Bishop took that action and since then the Church has worked closely with the police.”

EDIT: *The making part might actually just be copying the images, not making them himself.

No matter what the Catholic Church says it is doing to prevent victimization of children by its priests it doesn't seem like they are really managing to do anything about it. Especially since at least some of their own Child Protection officers might be corrupt.

Welp. Wow, there really are no words. Burn it down, burn it all down.

Good to see he was arrested, as any person who intentionally looks at child porn should be, given their furthering the exploitation of children.

Really, if one wants child porn, stick to fictional children. That, I feel, deserves full protection as no one is being harmed in the making of it, regardless of the squick factor.

With regards to the Catholic Church...

It will further the stereotypes of Catholic priests being pedophiles, but really, what can you do? It's hard to screen out pedophiles; nobody's going to admit to it! You just have to be vigilante and report them as you go.

Well it's takes one to know one. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was doing a great job.

Well, I don't think anyone could possibly think it's surprising that a paedophile is an upstanding member of the community in Plymouth.

I doubt this dude is going to be excommunicated. They excommunicated a nun who okayed an abortion to save the mother's life, but they won't excommunicate pedophiles.

UK again..

AFAIK, it is illegal to possess fictional child porn as well in UK. But actually it is not only CP - rape porn (including staged) and some other types can get one to a jail as well. UK is quite moralistic in this regard.

But it is not pron which is a problem as it is possible to live without - they also banned guns and (OMG) knifes, quite strict drug schedule, digital laws, and you get country which is quite upleasant to live for anyone who like individual freedom and liberties.

Why do they use work laptop for this?

yawn....wanna actually substantiate any of that?

He's the chief? The article only mentions that he is an official.

Though, if I wanted to be the devil's advocate, I'd say child pornography is not the same as sexually harassing a child. Yet, they're both grotesque so I guess nothing can be said good about it.

Weren't you warning people about making generalizations in the Norwegian terrorist thread?

Far be it from me to defend the Catholic church but it does look like they're cooperating with the police on this one. At least they didn't send him off to work in another district.

Perhaps they fear they'd be left with too few personnel if they did it...

Cooperation with the police in order to sacrifice "one for the team" is not enough. I know that pedophilia is also held to be somehow inborn, but it's about time that a serious, thorough investigation be made into the abnormally high prevalence of pedophilia inside the Catholic Church, and into how its rules (all the crap surrounding sex, and the mental states it creates on those indoctrinated into it) may be encouraging and multiplying it among people who would otherwise have normal sexual desires.

"child protection official"
How do you get chief out of that?

Was he actually running the child protection for the entire diocese or just a subsection of it?

The Anglicans and the Baptists are also experiencing this problem and how much is that in the news?

Hahaha, if that's how the Catholic church is subdivided in the UK, they're even more out of touch with reality than I thought

I feel sorry for them here. I mean, hiring someone to help handle a problem is what you're supposed to DO.

All things at which the Catholic Church fails miserably. It's not about anecdotes and stereotypes, it's about the Chuch willingly and actively protecting abusers and shaming or even excommunicating victims.

If the victim is brave enough to come forward, he or she is excommunicated from the church permanently (which in some circles also condemns you to Hell), while the rapist is given a slap on the hand and shipped quietly to another parish, preferrably one far away.

"Disgusting" is too mild a word.

Everything you need to know about the Catholic Church's sexual politics in one sentence, wouldn't you say? :undecide:

It probably corresponds to historical Irish immigration- hence the Dioceses of Liverpool being so much smaller than the Dioceses of Birmingham, despite those two conurbations being roughly the same size- so it's bound to be a bit disjointed.
