J! CMD-J!

SWEET

Thanks, AlanH and dojoboy. I didn't see that around, maybe I didn't look hard enough. And it's been so long since I played on the PC that I forgot. As has been said many times, thanks Brad, you rock.

With Brad leaving Westlake, will there be any more updates to civ3 and will it decrease the chances for possible mac version of the civ3 expansion?

Brad was doing the upgrades on his on time. So if he ever has time to finalize any builds (editor), I guess we could see something. As far as a civ expansion goes, that depends on a publishing company.

I'm obviously out of a loop somewhere, as usual. Which news site lets this sort of cat out of the bag?

I intend to finalize the 1.29 update before I leave Westlake. So if you know of _any_ issues, now is the time to mention them. I'm down to under a week left. ;)

As for expansions, no, I wouldn't think my departure would affect that in any negative way. It's not like I'm the only person in the world who can port Firaxis games to the Mac. :) Naturally, I'd love to do Conquests, but that was a sacrifice I had to make in moving to Aspyr.

Thanks Dojoboy, caught up now! Congratulations Brad. Best of luck at Aspyr.

Hey,
I'm new to this list, but I've been playing since Civ I. I use OS 10.2.8 with a 933 and 1 gig of memory. I have just recently, like today, downloaded this patch and I like the changes but before I even get to 1000 BC the game quits and I go to my desktop. No warning, no hangs, nothing. I have never had a bit of trouble before this. Is there a later patch since this beta? I have read through your discussions here and I dumped my preferences, reloaded CivIII and the patch, restarted, and I repaired permissions. No change. I'm at a loss. What do you think?

Is it a prepatch save file or a new game under 1.29beta2?

Dojoboy,
It's a new game, in fact, 4 or 5 new games all behaved the same way. No obvious trigger.
Jim

This'll be inconvenient, but try doing a reinstall. Trash the application and reinstall, then patch to the beta. I've not heard of this type of crash occurring at all with the beta patch.

Hi, welcome to CFC and the Mac ghetto. 1.29b2 is the latest patch. We're waiting for MacSoft to release the pukkah version of it, but this one is stable under normal conditions.

- Do you have any non-standard video or sound hardware, or are you running any Civ3 mods?

- How full is your hard drive? I started to get apparently random crashes when my hard drive was close to full.

- If you have an autosave file from the turn before a crash, does it crash again if you reload and replay? If so, post it here and we can see if it happens on another machine.

- A reproduceable crash is very useful input to the developers, so Brad Oliver would probably like to see a crash log report from it as well.

- If it's a random non-reproduceable event then it sounds to me like an interaction with something else on your system.

@Dojoboy: The way I read it, Jim has already done the full reinstallation sequence without success, so doing it again probably won't help.

Oh. Well, its a good thing the cavalry showed up. ;) Jimmr, let us know how things shake out.

AlanH,
My hardware is all Apple original except for a WD FW external HD. I have 9.5gigs clear on a 60 gig drive. The saved games do crash repeatedly, even if I take different actions leading up to the crash. I am including the last save but I'm unsure of the attachment system. The note here says max size is 102K. The save is 1.2megs. Hoping I just don't understand something. If I try to include both the save and the log, only one shows up, so I will send a second email if necessary.
I have had trouble with SpamFire and some games before, but I don't remember the whole story. I shut it down and tried again but the saved game still crashed. Is it possible the damage was already done? At any rate, ...just struck me! Does the save get uploaded instead of emailed? I've never done that. Let me know.
Oh yeah, I did already do the reinstall. Thanks AlanH and Dojoboy.
Jim

OK maybe I figured out the attachment (.zip) thing.

AlanH,
Here is the save game. Does the system only take one attachment at a time? or is it size dependent?
Jim

The file limit for a direct atachment is 100 KBytes, whih is enough for an early .SAV game file if it is compressed, as you have found. Version 1.29 compresses the files you create using Save from the game, but you should always zip the uncompressed autosaves. After 100 turns or so even the compressed files are too big to attach directly to your posts.

To upload large and/or multiple files use the Upload File option at the bottom of each page. It allows you to upload files up to 3 MBytes, and up to three at a time. Use the View Uploads6 link to see the contents of the upload directory after you have uploaded. Control click and copy the links to your files, and paste them into your post. You can use url= /url tags if you want the links to have your own text, or just let the "Automatically parse URLs" feature put tags around them. Use img /img tags if you upload jpg or gif image files and they will appear in line in your post. If you want to see how it's done just hit Reply on a post that has a feature you are interested in, and you will see the original text of the message - like using View Source in a browser to see the raw HTML.

I've grabbed your file, and will have a look at it Real Soon Now (TM). Right now I'm in the preflight phase of a particularly heavy, and overdue, Sucession Game session

It crashes on my system also, so its not your system. I gather something is amiss with your Civ3 application that is creating corrupt files. I'll peek at my crash log.

The crash log shows it was trying to write to a settings file and crashed during a seek operation on the file. That's when it tries to move the file pointer forward or backward in the file. I assume the application writes its current status to the prefs periodically, maybe every end-of-turn, and this is the operation that has triggered te crash.

There are two Preferences files that could be involved, bt I don't think there's an easy way to tell which is being written without knowing the inner workings of the software. Both are in ~/Library/Preferences. That's in your Home directory. One is called "CivIII preferences", the other is called "com.westlake.civ3.plist". You could try opening the second one in a text editor to see if there is anything strange in it - it's just an XML-style Property List file. If I get a chance to run your game I can see if it shows up anything strange.

Is your Home directory on the Firewire drive? Maybe there's something nasty about removable drives and the Civ3 software? I suspect Brad Oliver would be able to comment. Let's hope he stops by real soon. Or you could email him the crash log - his address is in the 1.29b2 patch readme.

Does it crash after you give orders to a particular unit? I've had games where the whole thing crashes to desktop after I give out orders to one problem unit.
