Civ3 1.29 beta 2

Hi nmcul. That really shouldn't happen if you are using the current patch without any mods, and if your system is in good shape. It could easily happen with a buggy mod, though. What have you done to get around it when it happens?

nmcul,
No. It has happened over several games but I can't predict the timing. In fact, I don't think I'm in control of the game when it crashes. It seems that it tends to happen when units are moving, or when they just finished moving. Once, it happened as the AI was taking me to fix up my palace. Never got there.
I just checked my last save. I move some units, some barbarians attack me, a barbarian ship sails around and poof. I've played it through a dozen times, at least, I've even given different commands. Always the same result.

AlanH
I use the FW drive only for backup and as a scratch disc for video work I do. No connection I can see to this problem.
Thanks again, every body,
Jim

Jimmr:
Sorry, I lied about the crash log interpretation. My Mac displayed another crash log entirely when I opened yours, and I didn't spot that it was not your window :(

Now that I look at your real log, nearly every crash is happening in the same routine in the Civ3 code: AI_baseReset__6CityAIFb. Whatever that routine does is triggering a problem on your system. This routine seems to be called from a Game Upkeep process - a sort of housekeeping thread I guess, hence its apparently random appearance, depending on when that process gets time to run.

I think you need input from the developer now. He can run that save file under debug conditions and see what is causing the problem. I recommend you email Brad Oliver with a copy of the save file and the crash log, or just point him to your posts in this thread.

AlanH,
Two events have occured. One, the game stopped crashing, for five days, and then began again last night. Second, Brad Oliver no longer accepts email from this source, according to the response when I try to send him a message. Now what?
Jim

1. What else changed last night? Software doesn't get rusty, and it doesn't change its behaviour unless something else changes.

2. If you tried to send email using Brad Oliver's link from this site then it fails. All email links from this site fail. As I pointed out earlier, his email address is given in the readme file that is installed when you apply this updater. It is not a firaxis or civfanatics address, and I am sure it would still work.

E-mail me a saved game that reproduces the crash, along with instructions on how I can reproduce it. The more specific the instructions, the more likely I am to reproduce it, and the more likely I can at least identify a fix. My e-mail address is unchanged - bradman@pobox.com.

Summary:
If you are on 1.21, or even 1.14, then I think you need it if only to get to an improved version of the game logic. If you are on 1.29b1 then it should at least improve stability.

Detail:
Compared with 1.21 it adds Fortify All and Wake All commands which are very useful for managing big stacks of units, and lets you rename an elite unit that generates a Leader. It also changes some game characteristics, I think related to tech rate, and I certainly found it to be more stable than 1.21. It's also necessary if you want to play scenarios created for the Windows 1.29 version, including the Games of the Month, or cross platform Succession Games.

Compared with 1.29b1 I think it adds stability - it fixed a memory leak inherited from the 1.29 Windows code. But some of the above features *might* have been added at beta 2 level as well.

Which Folder do I put the patch in? text?

Place both in your Civ3 folder, then install the patch.

It downloads as an installer. Just run it from wherever you download it to and tell it which Civ3 folder to upgrade, and you're done.

Ok, scenarios take forever to load with the patch installed on my computer. It at least recognizes them and goes through the motions, but it always gets hung up at the "Configuring Scenario" progress bar. This can't be normal?

Give me a link to a scenario that does this and I'll try it here.

I installed the update and may have found a bug. After install I could not use the editor. It starts up and I get an unexpected quit. I have a back up civ I did not use the bata on in another drive and the editor works fine. The editor was working before I installed the patch.

No bug. The editor is compatible w/ 1.21g only. Reason is, its in line w/ the PC releases. After 1.29 came out for the PC, an updated editor was also built. Brad has a skeleton editor built for 1.29 bu its not complete, and it may never be since he's doing it for free and has other paying jobs atm. But, he did build 1.29 for us....

You need to keep that old non-updated version of Civ3 to use with the editor, and use the 1.29b2 copy for playing. 1.29b2 should play the scenarios you create with your 1.21g-plus-editor combo. You may then want another copy of 1.29b2 to mod if you want to play the gotm, and another to mod for DyP, and .... and ... Oh! And a big hard drive :p

Thanks, I did have a back-up with with1.21 and so far every thing is playing fine on 1.29b2 I just wish Macsoft would get on the ball.

I did all that before I left Westlake, and my not-so new job with Aspyr would preclude me from doing work on a MacSoft project. I've got more than enough to keep me busy at Aspyr even if that weren't the case. ;)
