I generated five starts.

#1 - A very versatile start with what amounts to five bonus grasslands and a lux. Minimap location is decent, but unfortunately we seem to be on a peninsula (look west).

option_1.jpg

#2 - A very vanilla start. Dead center with no BGs, but if you look closely, ivory two siles SE of the settler for SoZ. It also has that obnoxious thing where you're two tiles from the coast so you can never make a harbor to make those three sea tiles productive.

option_2.jpg

#3 - 4 hills and at least two BGs make this a very productive capital. There's also a river NE, which looks promising for our second city. We're right next to tundra, though.

option_3.jpg

#4 - We'd want to move a tile SW with this start, which will produce a lot of food and also has nearby forests. Pretty far south, however.

option_4.jpg

#5 - Meh. Two rivers nearby, but they're both going into the tundra.

I think the answer lies behind door #2. The other starts have freshwater but those are lakes not rivers, and the riverside commerce bonus is way too valuable to give up. It looks shield limited, though, at least in the early going.

Well.. I'm not a huge fan of starting near tundra so that'd rule out #3 and #5 in my book. A river is always a river so that'd put #2 and #4 ahead of #1. Then it's a difficult choice, but I guess I'd choose #2 because of the ivory and more central location, even if it seems a little poor on shields.

Man you've got good eyes, Commodofied.

Yeah, I just saw a tiny hump on plains, and I figure it can't be anything but ivory. Let's see what we can do with this start.

Will you start us out, Whomp? Why don't you take 30 turns.

After that, for the first round:

Whomp - 30 turns
Leha - 20
Nikodemus - 15
MjM - 15
commodified -10
pindicator -10

That'll cover our first 100 turns, after that we'll have 10 turns each, whether in war or peace.

I've updated the roster at the beginning, always follow that order.

Personally I like #4 more, but I'll go with much more experienced players.

OK I will start it up tonight.

 lurker's comment:

Crossing the river either to the SE or E will deal with the annoying coastal thing and going SE will put the phantom elephants in the city radius.

One tile South then one tile SE looks like desert, i.e. flood plains. I say this because it looks like a slightly different color than the plains. My vote would be for moving one tile SE.

Well I moved the settler E.
4000 BC Move the worker to the cow and it reveals a BG 1E of the cow. Move the settler 1E and see the ivory on the plains and a forest.

3700 BC Salamanca warrior --warrior. Send warrior Spike up north.
3600 BC Worker to the BG. Spike hikes a mountain. Blech. Jungles.
3500 BC Salamanca warrior --settler Bam Bam fortifies in Salamanca with pop at 3.
IT Border expansion reveals flood plains to the south.

3350 BC Spikes see some spices in the eastern jungles 6 tiles away.
3300 BC Hi Liz. What up?

No deals...she may know the Greeks or Koreans. Salamanca at pop 4 needs lux at 30%.
3200 BC settler--gran
3100 BC worker to the forest.
3050 Liz up CB. Pop at 3 lux to 10%. Move settler one more tile gets coast and river. It's a little wide at cxxxc but I think it's worth it.
3000 BC Niagra Falls starts a curragh.
2850 BC English start Colossus.
2750 BC Liz has the wheel.
2710 BC see a lime border. Niagra Falls curragh -- worker
2590 BC Get another settler off. English get WC. Can't reach lime border.

SUMMARY
I didn't do much exploring south but the curragh is headed in that direction. I went pretty far east. It seems we are on a long island. My attempt at a dot map. We have the magic 5 fpt in the capital so I think we should be able to crank 4 turn settlers soon.

Got it will play tomorrow.
Before that it would be nice to discuss our plans for nearest future.

Thoughts from the save...

Looks like our 4 turn settler factory is very easily obtainable. Either we can have it at pop 4&5 by mining one of the beegees or we can do it with Salamanca at pop 5&6 by irrigating one of our plains squares (I say irrigating a plains because its quicker and we are going to need to drag irrigation down to our next town anyway). Also, I think we need to have the governor set to emphasize production for the settler factory to work, but am not certain in that regard.

Yeah, after that worker finishes with it's road, I'd have it hook the lux and then irrigate.

At pop 5 Niagra can become a two-turn worker pump with a lot of work (Granary, irrigate both flood plains, mine beegee + two grass tiles). We probably will want it to pump out some warriors for settler escort and MP duty first, tho.

What kind of priority do we want on picking up those spices to our east? Is it even feasable to do beat the English to that spot? Since it is jungle I imagine it would be low priority for the AI to settle... unless they are already out of good lands :mischief:

I don't know if I would have sent the first settler south. Going to your northern-most dot on the dotmap seems best. But we can just send our next settler that way. I would send the next settler to the northern dot and the one after to the one east of Salamanca, with a mind to grab those spices eventually. But that could change if we see something better to the south.

Edit: I do grammer good!

Some of my thoughts quickly.

Isn't just irrigating that plains enough for 4 turn settlers at sizes 4&5? As far as I can see we'd get 6+8+7+9=30 shields with the governor set to emphasize production. Or I could be talking nonsense. :)

There sure is a lot of jungle. Would be nice if the continent extended a little more to the south but given how far east it goes, I'm not too hopeful. We might end up chopping some of that rainforest sooner rather than later.

Reaching those spices before England doesn't seem completely impossible, I'd prolly give it a shot unless there's something spectacular in the south.

With that I'm off to entertain my parents on their yearly trip to the city. :)

BTW the purple dot on the hill to the east should be 1W of my spot.

I think the spices are easily attainable. I thought the English captured some spices already.

Personally, I don't use the governor maybe because I don't trust him. I prefer to look at the city every two turns.

After the road is built I would connect the ivory next.

I'm less concerned about escorts vs. getting another curragh out of Niagra Falls. We need more contacts. I would knock out another curragh after the worker. I think the lime border would be...the Hittites?

Bede did you happen to shadow?
