Well Russia's economy wasn't good to start the Cold War in the first place and that didn't stop them.![]()
Russia's economy is weak because they're a kleptocratic petrostate. The petrostate part is the main thing really keeping them afloat. They blow that, and that's when the real problems start.
That's economically very easy to reverse. Socially/politically is different of course. But economically, that doesn't sound like someone on the verge of collapse but someone on the verge of being able to resume prosperity.
Since 1953, when the fusion program started, the total spent on fusion energy in the US, both Magnetic and Inertial is $22.4 Billion dollars.
Adjusting for inflation [year?], total fusion spending is $29.1 Billion.

That’s an average of $393 Million a year - adjusted to $510 million per year in the US. This includes NIF as well as Tokamaks and alternatives.
