The mid-term year 2010 saw about as much cash as the normally much more expensive presidential campaigns, thanks to Citizens United.

2012 is only thru Mar 20th. For comparison, this year's $90 million year-to-March-20 dwarfs the runner-up, 2008, which had only :faint: spent $38 million to this point.

Bloomberg's Alexis Xydias dug up a 2003 paper by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. According to the paper's authors, stocks tend to underperform during the days following a solar storm.

From the Atlanta Fed:

The figure displays the bar graphs of the returns on the NASDAQ, S&P500, AMEX, and NYSE (NY) stock market indices during normal days (left column) and bad days (right column). We define the six calendar days after a storm as bad days and the remaining calendar days as normal days.

Now this is a useful statistic! :)

Perhaps a solar storm has an effect on Earth weather?

What's with the lone killjoys in South Dakota?
Shannon County is totally within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which is mostly run by the Oglala Sioux. Since the 1830s, the Oglala have prohibited alcohol sale and possession out of fear exactly the same thing the firewater did to most other Native American tribes.

This has not actually worked, because the Oglala can just go across the state line to Whiteclay in Nebraska. The four liquor stores in Whiteclay sell something like five million cans of beer a year, mostly to Pine Ridge Oglala. So Pine Ridge has something like an eighty to ninety percent alcoholism rate and one of the highest incidences of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the country.

Indian reservation. Some of the reservations have a huge alcohol problem, I guess perhaps this tribe decides to ban it.

The racial makeup of the county was 4.51% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 94.20% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.42% of the population.

Oh, wow, that really sucks. :(

Use of radioisotope generators in space.

BTW, we're running out of plutonium for them, so unless we make more, say bye to any further probe missions to the outer solar system. (Woo, progress - not being able to do what we did 40 years ago
