I considered building a hobbit house here in the Philippines. The underground aspect with maybe 18" of dirt and plants on top would keep the place cool. After some thought however I realized I wanted to live on the ocean which is cooler anyway, plus on thinking about it living underground lost its attraction. The Hobbits for instance, few windows all on one side.
