DMAW04 - A Testing War

Found on first hill, start on Mining and warrior. [forgot screenie so this is from turn 3]

Well Charlemange starts with a scout not warrior, so we're (somewhat) safe.

We don't need to go warrior rushing here. Just go Immortal or axe rushing as we would normal. Probably only need one more city with copper or horses and we can take him. It's actually a positive from the save we can pick up an AI capital without huge maintenance issues. Although it also ain't the greatest city in the world (has cows in the shadows).

Pop Mysticism from a hut.

Go Fishing as we can get a work boat out and go whipping.

Go warrior --> warrior in capital.

Where are you going Mr Scout?

Looks Turkish, leave them alone.

Play the 20 here we are.

Warrior in 2 and Fishing in 1.

I'd go Bronze Working/Animal Husbandry for research as we don't need to rush the rush :mischief: and can use slavery effectively. I'd build work boat/worker/barracks or settler using the whip. All up for discussion of course.

Here's the world map. No great spots available close by. Next cities will probably be determined by copper and horse locations.

We definately seem to be in the SE corner of the landmass so at least can plan our outlying cities to meet the incoming hordes better. Hopefully 2-3 hilly outer cities are sufficient.

Got it. Not sure if I'll be able to play it tonight, though. I'll try ... but I think the missus has some chores for me to do.

BTW, what version are we running? I've got 3.02 loaded. Do I need to install the 3.03 patch?

I guess the plan is for the 2nd city to grab either copper or horses. Which one do we want first? If no one has a preference, I'll probably go after BW since it opens up slavery and chopping.

And I assume we've decided on a name for our 3rd city? Something along the lines of Aachen, I presume? We'll leave that to the Civman, I guess.

@Conroe:
We are using a mix of 3.02 and 3.03 in another SG without any problems. The save format is the same. I don't think you need to upgrade. Better wait for 3.13.

Make sure we get some choking units up soon. They are VERY important keep charlie from expanding particuraly onto a hill as Protective + Hill are VERY difficult to defeat. An archer or Immortal if we have horses will probably suffice.

AH is the way to go if we want to use Immortals at all, but I think an axe rush is smarter, because immortals probably won't impress Protective archers.

I started off by stagnating the city's growth at size 2. We'll get the growth once the Workboat is constructed. Fishing in 1 and Warrior in 1. Next up was Bronze Working and a Workboat.

I was a bit surprised by how long it would take to build that boat. I failed to notice that this was an epic speed game. I don't think I'll ever get used to the long build times of epic speed. :crazyeye:

Somebody founded Buddhism in 3425BC.

And our wandering Scout met Mao up in the northwest.

A couple of random events to report. First is that Charlemagne gets a free cover promotion for all of his melee units. Glad we aren't planning on using Archers.

dmaw043100bcfreecoverba0.jpg

Secondly is that a source of Truffles was discovered in the caves underneath our city. Extra food is always nice!

dmaw043075bctrufflesge8.jpg

When the Workboat had 1 turn left, I started the city to growing again. I started a Worker after the Workboat. So much for the growth. Working the clams meant that BW would be done in 10 turns. It will take 15 turns to train an epic speed Worker. I figured the Barracks and the copper city Settler can at least be chopped.

Speaking of copper, Bronze Working was completed on the last turn ...

dmaw043000bccopperqp6.jpg

Looks like we won't need that Settler, after all! :D As you can see from the screenshot, the Worker is due in 4 turns. The truffles shaved a turn off of the build. You might also notice that the city is undefended. :scared: Almost ... since there is only one way in at the moment, our Warrior is stationed on a hill just outside the borders.

Our other Warrior is also stationed atop a hill. He is keeping an eye on our Frankish friends. From what I could tell, he didn't build anything during the last 20 turns. :dunno: At this point, 1 Axeman is enough to take the city. Maybe 2 Axeman, by the time the Worker builds the mine and chops the forest.

Here is a big picture view of the world ...

Spoiler Big Overview Map :

Research is set on Animal Husbandry, due in 11 turns. No beakers have been invested.

And finally, the save ...

:woohoo: Excellent. Had to be some give back after the average start.

Worker barracks (whip at size 3) --> axes seems good. We'll still need to slip in a settler for horses for pillaging Immortals.

Charlie has at least built a warrior during your set Conroe as one is cover promoted. Our only worry is a huge lot of archers appearing but we'll be able to take him pretty easy actually.

I'm going to be away for work in our lovely nation's capital (the nation is lovely that is, the captial reeks). Who knows if they even have telephones down there? So I'll only have limited access to the forums. I'll be able to play if I'm up before Friday but might not be too active.

Can't say for sure. That Warrior was in the city by the time our unit got to that hill. He got the Cover promotion when that random event hit.

My guess is that Charlemagne is building a Settler. No new units in 15 turns. No growth either. I'm guessing Settler. :dunno:

And I'd probably recommend that we forego the Barracks for the first Axeman. Assuming he still has only the 1 Warrior when the copper mine is connected.

When we finish the worker, we won't be able to build an axeman so need to build something else, a whipped barracks seems good but could go another work boat.

Not much happened this round.
(boy that was a boring + fast round)

The funniest thing that happened was “A great Mediater wants to make peace between the Holy Roman and the Persians”. I said yes figuring either way it would be funny and I’d redeclare afterwards. Instead I get

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

Heh heh…

Anyways I got the copper connected

Civ4ScreenShot0002-1.jpg

Finished AH

Civ4ScreenShot0003-1.jpg

Started on the wheel.

I also completed an axe and sent it on it’s way. (missing screenie alert!)

But the bad news is,

And the save

BTW I decided to skip whipping the Barracks because it would take at least one more turn until it was whippable (huh???).

immortals probably won't impress Protective archers.
I've always found a great use of the Immortal is a 1:1 ratio btwn Flanking and Combat promoted ones is great ~ not too mention that they get the bonus against archers . . .

check out The Last AW Game DM won for the punch of the Immortal (course this was before Protective i think) ~ this was also the last AW game DM won iirc . . . and please ignore the ignominious defeat beforehand

Are the horses near Aachen our closest? If so, we're going to have to take Aachen with axes. At least it ain't on a hill. I'd start some axe whipping as we'll need probably 2 for each archer.

As pholk said, withdraw Immortals are great.

lurker's comment:
looks like Aachen is City 2, and horses city 3

lurkers comment:

I think parking a unit next to the AI city will cause it to spam many many more units. I would move away from the capital before closing in on it.

Played 20 turns...

Turn 60: No wonder Civman couldn't whip, slavery wasn't activated. Revolting...
Turn 61: Some MM gives us the barracks in 1 turn.
Turn 62: Wheel in, selecting Writing for Mathematics (better chops and construction). Lots of axes in the production queue.
Turn 64: Charlemagne is spooked by our troops and building nothing but archers (now three in the capital). I retreat outside the borders to make him build something else. (ThERat made the same observation independently)
Turn 77: Chopping and hard whipping has produced a small army, which now arrives outside the HRE capital.
Turn 78: Attack!
aw01.jpg

First axe lost (16%), archer 3.0 -> 2.0
Second axe lost (20%), archer unharmed
Third axe wins! (20%) :crazyeye:
Axe 4-5 wins (62%, 97%), and HRE is no more! :high5:
aw02.jpg

We got some money and a free worker.
Turn 79: Writing is in. Not sure what to research next, but decide on Pottery for a few cottages to support two new cities. Building a settler to get the horse city up asap.

And the save: View attachment DMAW04 BC-2025.CivBeyondSwordSave

We have two unhappy faces in the capital because of whipping, so go easy on them for a while. It felt necessary to get the axemen asap, and gained us a good second city.

But does it not also stop the AI from expanding? Or from connecting up resources? I'm thinking once we have our Immortals, we should station a couple of them (at least) on every civ.

I liked your earlier idea of going after Mathematics and Construction. Maybe after Pottery? BTW, how far away are the horses?

Good call on the whip. Getting the Axemen out ASAP was absolutely necessary. Good set of turns, Yena!
