DMAW04 - A Testing War

berserks01 has missed his got it. Grey Fox, its all yours.
Huh? Oh ... Doh!!! Sorry, totally slipped my mind and I had time to play last night too. Guess it's a skip for me this round.

No, you go ahead and take it. My empty playable slots are sporadic at best, so I'll take a skip to get the game moving.

Our forces started the pillaging ... and Zare is doing us the favor of founding a religion for our taking.

DMAW-BC0470.jpg

Bravely, we settled a city right at the doorstep of ZY.

DMAW-BC0395-susa.jpg

But I think our other cities are too lightly defended, so I am adding Immortals in those cities only defended by one unit.

Meanwhile our forces continue to pillage, then I saw this:

DMAW-BC0380.jpg

Hmm ... ZY is now amassing a lot of troops in that city, so for safety sake, I attacked the HA and chariots, and decided to pull back next turn. His initial forces, feeling suicidal, charged at our stack, costing him some chariots and an axe. Our forces are now resting at exactly the same spot where I began ...

Oh, by the way, we are offcially broke:

Have you noticed that the great wall is visible to the far west? There is another civ there which we haven't met yet. Perhaps we need another city by the lake (gems, copper, cows and sugar) to block of future invasions from that direction. But not until our economy has recovered, of course.

Was one of the things I wanted to get going was exploration to find the other civs. The gems city should pay for itself if its working the gems but I'll probably hold off.

A quick review of the situation shows we have no happy resources. Gems might be needed after all.

Anyway on with the show.

I was very tempted by Gondar, even more so after this.

My Immortal gobbles up the axe and we head onwards and take the city.

<missing screenshot>

We need the religion otherwise I'd raze it.

We pop a GG in Beijing. Unsure what to do?

We find Bismark.

Zara attacks Gondar with swords and axes and kills most of our troops.. The attackers are dealt with but we're short here. Reinforcements on the way. I'm thinking it was :smoke: to take it but it was so tempting.

And that was 10. We're still a long way from Construction. Wondering if Meditation (or Calendar or Code of Laws) might be better to get a monastery to Gondar. In any case I'm building a road there for a hopeful free spread.

An Immortal, axe and archer will hit Gondar next turn, which should allow proper defence. We need to boost troop numbers in general before we do any more offensive manouvers (pillaging Bismark and Zara).

Happiness is still our biggest issue. Beijing and Persepolis in particular have plenty of food to grow. I kept looking at the gems, thinking they would be nice but unsure we can afford them (although once we're working them we should be all right).

The GG is still in Beijing. Not sure whether to merge here or Persepolis or create an uber Immortal or medic Immortal

Good job taking Gondar ... but :whipped: for missing the most glorious screentshot of your turnset

The defenders from Susa could be pulled to defend Gondar temporarily.

A super medic is advisable.

If we have the production in capitol, an alternative is to go for the Pyramids. Representation will add +3 happiness immediately to 3 largest cities, or HR would allow us to grow in all cities, saving us the need to get monarchy by research.

And of-course if we fail to get pyramids, the money will be handy in allowing deficit research.

Actually that's a really good idea. I'd certainly consider it (if I remember was about 40 turns though  ).

Is it +3 happiness in 3 largest cities? I always thought it's +5 happiness in 5 largest cities or did this get changed somewhere along the way and escaped my insightful (:scan: ) observations?

I've remember seeing +5 in 5 on standard map since I always play standard maps....maybe I'm just too :old: and am seeing things.

Edit: Just took a look. It's +3 happiness in 5 largest cities. Go figure.

Thanks for the PM, Ozbenno! Unfortunately, it is going to be a couple of days before I can play it. If someone has some free time, a swap might be in order.

Were our losses in Gondar from a lack of healing? If so, I'd probably go for the medic. Otherwise, I'd say merge him in a different city so that we have 2 cities pumping out 5xp units.

Edit: Just took a look. It's +3 happiness in 5 largest cities. Go figure.
That would have been my guess. But I wasn't really sure, since I don't normally switch to rep for the happiness. I think it does change based upon map size or speed or something, though.

Having said that, I'm not sure that diverting production away from troops in an AW game is our best move. Do we have enough troops to reinforce Gondar, as well as to harass Germany?

I just upgraded ... :D

In further great news, the patch doesn't seem to be backwards compatible, ie once you upgrade those with 3.03 can't open the saves. This is going to play havoc with SGs everywhere.

I haven't patched (well I did but re-installed from scratch). Who has and who hasn't? We'll need to sort out an all-in (one way or the other) approach.
