DMAW04 - A Testing War

I had managed to stay afloat ... but a simple mediation would now take us 50 turns to learn

I have pillaged two more cottages to keep us from disbanding, and when I see that Zara built a new settler:

DMAW-AD0220-Aksum.jpg

I moved the stack away hoping he would send out a settler party, making the defense at Aksum weaker. But no, he stayed in there, building more archers. :aargh:

DMAW-AD0325-Askum.jpg

In retrospect, I should have bring the forces back into our border to cut the money leak, and waited until we amass a large enough forces to take out the last city of Yaqob. We should now be able to build swords.

DMAW-AD0325-iron.jpg

In the other news, we have some happiness problem, and yet we do not build colloseums??? Well, most cities are now building them (as we cannot afford more useless troops ... we should save whatever quota we have for swords).

I HATE Random Events ... especially when you are broke.

DMAW-AD0235-vermin.jpg

German are now starting to create trouble towards the West. I have already killed a spear and an axe (earning us one more general, which I have left him in BeiJing).

End-turns, there is a stack of sword and axe approaching:

On a brighter note, we now have +3gpt at 0% science, so maybe we can turn science up a notch.

Suggest we pump out nothing but swords now, and get rid of Zara for good. Meanwhile, hopefully the Pyramids would save the day -- either we lose it or we get it, both would help in different ways. Losing it means money to keep us afloat. Getting it means Representation to help with happiness and research.

Also, if the next player understand the mechanics of producing gold from whip overflow, be sure to use it on the colloseums that our cities are building.

Well, I've never heard of overflow gold, either. And after reading that link, I am still not sure that I understand it. But here is my take on the article:

"You cannot have more overflow hammers than your base production. By whipping and chopping on the same turn, you can possibly create more hammers than you are allowed to carryover. The excess hammers are converted to gold." :dunno:

I have one word to say to that ....

HUH?!?

Its an interesting article, whether I have understood it enough to actually be able to do it is an entirely different proposition.

BTW, still haven't heard from civman 123, Jamesds, if you still want in, you're IN (I'll slot you in civman's spot).

Thanks, I'll join! It's been quite an exciting SG so far, will be nice to get involved, although I'm only a Noble/Prince player. I think I'll have a quick read of the rules I remember seeing on the front page...

First thing I do is whip the monument in Ecbatana as getting the gems online is a priority.

Bismark's stack is destroyed.

I move our stack out of Zara's land to save in unit costs and to encourage him to get the settler out of there.

Got incoming stacks from Sally and Bizzy.

Pity as I'd have eaten that city if they weren't there.

Bizzy's stack has headed south.

Meditation comes in. Priesthood for temples seems OK.

Was trying the whip/chop money generator thing but forgot to stop the chop in time so no idea if it works.

Zara falls for my plan.

We kill 3 archers but there is still plenty of them, we may have enough troops though. I would put money that his worker is trying to reconnect the iron.

GG is settle in Susa, which has good production potential.

Here's the situation down south.

Pretty much under controlish. I moved our troops en-masse to the hill. The attackers have to then attack from the sugar. We can attack from here. I would let the lone sword up, kill with axe (which retreats), whip catapult and sac that against the second wave etc. If it all gets too much retreat into the city.

A general round of whipping everywhere else would also be good.

Finances are back to even at 10% :goodjob:. Priesthood in 9. Pyramids still 20 odd turns away.

Hmmm ... they could still squeeze by by going onto the rice couldn't they?

OK, thanks - got it! Will play either tonight or tomorrow (maybe now if I finish my assignment early...)

OK, here's my 10 turns:

Well, our economy started taking a nosedive, so unfortunately Science had to be reduced to 0% again. I moved the units in Ethiopian territory back into ours (to help with 'troops in enemy lands' costs) near the end of the turnset, since there was nothing to do. I did see a worker in the city as I left, so maybe some more pillaging will be in order soon!

So, the initial problem was the SoDs entering our lands. I promoted an axe to Combat I + Shock - a good combination for homeland defence, and we'll be needing it in the future. I move a stack of axes down to meet the first SoD, guessing they might land on the rice. I chop the Pyramids.

End of turn 206:
dmaw-ss1.jpg

Next turn, the stack moves back up...I move my stack back up.

Next turn, they split, which is rather annoying, so I keep my stack where it is to entice the southern stack onto the rice like they meant to do before. Then they'll be weak. I also whip an Archer in Ecbatana just in case and a catapult in Pasargadae.

I also explore with my axe to the west and meet more of them coming east...
dmaw-ss2.jpg

I also attacked the northern marching stack (3 2CR swords and an axe) with an Immortal - it retreated, leaving the swordsman with 0.3 health. That's one out the way!
dmaw-ss3.jpg

At the end of this turn (208) I move a couple of units from adjacent cities to cover the high defensive squares the stack might move to.

dmaw-ss4.jpg

Next turn, as I thought, the southern stack move to the rice square. There is a resounding clash of swords as my nearby stack annihilates his - we didn't lose one unit! :D

dmaw-ss5.jpg

There's more units steadily approaching from the west

dmaw-ss6.jpg

A couple turns later (211) the northern stack is now surrounded and ready for the kill next turn.

dmaw-ss7.jpg

Now, at the end of turn 215 and after defeating a couple units from the oncoming west stacks (above), our situation looks much better:

dmaw-ss8.jpg

And to make it even nicer....we also got the Pyramids in turn 215 after some heavy chopping!!

dmaw-ss9.jpg

We really need to lessen up on the units now, our economy can't handle any more. I am in the process of building a couple of cottages too. And the gems will be able to be mined in a turn or two when the square can be defended.

Nice warring there, Jamesds :goodjob:

Did you switch to rep by any chance?

I don't think he did, since 215 was his last turn. But then Jamesds also forgot to upload the save ... ;)

Nice play, a solid good defense you put up in the west. But I hope you are not neglecting the east. While I agree our economy is bad, I don't think we can lessen up on unit builds... there is nothing else to build. I suggest we go the Zerg approach ...simply throw bodies at Askum .... yes, that might increase the WW, but then, once Askum is razed/captured, all WW contributed by Yaqob Zara would disappear also.

--

I'd go with the Protoss approach myself. The Zerg approach risk the chance of Yaqob units gaining more experience to better defend himself, while the Toss approach would bring the heavy hitter and leave nothing behind :)

And I agree, I would not lessen troop productions at all. Although we could definitely use some courthouses.
