I've been working on a multitude of small NES ideas, and this is the one which has won out. In opposition to a traditional NES, I offer up a twist on the commander NES. I offer to mod a two-player NES (set in war or cold war), providing maps when possible from my own collections. Rulesets (nothing complex) will also be provided based on the era of your challenge, but they will be based upon the existing ruleset for A Brave New World.

A Summary of What to Do: If you don't want to read everything else

Challenge someone to a duel, and pick what war you want to fight them in. Once you and opponent agree to do battle, I will moderate a small NES to allow you to display your martial prowess.

The Purpose

The purpose of this is to demonstrate your skill in military tactics against another NESer. These NESes will be quick with updates every other day or faster. The NESes will be small and hopefully decided with in the space of 5-10 updates, and not much longer.

For me, the purpose of this setup is to provide me with an easy and noncontinuous method of using my side rulesets and projects in actual NESes. Over the years I've come up with a lot of ideas which have never seen the light of day, and I'd like to get them out there. So, please, take advantage of this, and challenge someone to a contest.

Challenging a Person.

Here's how the NES will work. Links to the thread(s) will be provided here, and this is where the challenge will be deteremined. I will post rulesets and maps here as they are completed. Issue a challenge on While We Wait, by a Private Message, or on the A Brave New World thread When you want to challenge someone, do it like so:

I, [your name] hereby challenge [other person] to a duel of honor on the field of NESing battle! [Post link to this thread here]

Creating the Duel

Preferrably the two players will agree on the duel they pick, but in the case of a disagreement, the challenged player will be the one to decide. You can also opt for a randomly picked duel (by me) for the purpose of your fighting, particularly if you only have a certain era in mind.

Any scenario imaginable will be allowed, but a warning, more elaborate wars or bigger ones will require much more time to set up. I will allow ANY campaign, theater, or conflict from RL history, NESing, or alternative history. But once again, you must allow some time for set up for non-recommended selections. Below are my lists of Recommended Duel games, as the maps, rules, and stats, are already complete. This list will go as other maps are completed. If you want an instant duel to start right away with someone, please choose from the recommended duels list, otherwise post here with your idea and confirmation from your opponent

You must give me at least a week to create a new idea from scratch.

Recommended Duels

Note: Any war or campaign from any of my NESes also can be considered a recommended duel, as those are incredibly easy for me to adapt to this purpose.

Gunpowder Age (from 1450s on)

American Revolution: USA vs. British Empire 1776
A Different Civil War: USA vs. Republic of New England 1855
Operation Barbarossa- Germany vs. Soviet Union 1941
Invasion of France- Allies vs. Germany 1940
Red Alert- Soviets vs. Allies 1950
Gulf War- UN coalition vs. Iraq 1991
Red Pheonix- North Korea vs. South Korea 1986
Conspiracy Nut Invasion- United States invaded by world coalition 2013

Medieval era (1000-1450)

First Crusade: Christians vs. Muslims

From the Dawn of Time (4000 BC-1000 AD)

Punic Wars: Rome vs. Carthage
Alexander's Conquests: Macedon vs. Persia

Fantasy

War of the Ring: Forces of Good vs. Forces of Evil
The First Great War (Warcraft 1): The Horde vs. Azeroth
The Second Great War (Warcraft 2): The Horde vs. The Alliance

The Duels in Operation

I will only moderate a single duel at a time between two players. As stated before, these duels are not expected to last more than ten updates, as hopefuly the victor will be determined well before then. Make sure you have some idea of the war you'll be fighting, or don't. This is a pretty easy going set up.

Awards

I will be keeping track of a score of who wins how many duels. I have thought ought some nifty ideas to reflect this. As the NES goes there may even be prizes (working on a deal for that now). That's just something to consider.

Would the War of the Second Union from ABNW be too big for this :p?

I'm up for a duel if anyone is interested. I would prefer a duel from within the Gunpowder age over anything else. Something from ABNW or TWTUD would be good. :)

How about a hypothetical Franco-German ABNW war?

Personally, I don't see the point of an NES of such limited scope. Two players in a wargame with a time limit... well, it guts many of the parts of NESing that I enjoy.

Seconded. It's an oversimplification of any scenario and removes diplomacy, espionage, and intrigue.

I am in, anything during the Roman era strikes my fancy, but I would be willing to do others.

This will just inflate the pissing contests which we inevitably succumb to anyway during NESes.

Hey, I never said this is for everyone to enjoy. Some people will, some won't. This is the military element more than anything.

Woud you be hope for a 100 days campaign?

@qoou: Nah, any war is fine. In fact if you wanted a global war of the Second Union, that'd actually be quite easy for me to set up quickly.

@Yui and Justo: Which Hundred Days are you referring to: Napoleon or World War 1?

I'm up for this. I'll be schooled, but it will be a blast while it's done. Besides: I need the experience.

Is it possible to set up an alt. history NES: Cold war between the USA and the other superpower Nazi Germany? If not, I'd prefer the Red Alert scenario.

btw: your "A Different Civil War": you familiar with essex junto?

@Circuit: Certainly. Do you want the Cold War turning hot or an NES with various small powers to manipulate between the two of you? I am not familar with essex junto whatever that may be.

@EQ: We can do cold war turning hot, unless the other player wants the manipulation part.

Some little historical tidbit about Essex Junto:
Spoiler :
Essex Junto was the first attempt at secession in the US. Some New England Federalists, unhappy with the direction of the country and Republican control, decided to try to secede from the Union. They invited Alexander Hamilton to run for governor of New York, and as governor, he would join the conspirators and have New York secede. Hamilton declined, so the conspirators chose Aaron Burr to run. Hamilton, knowing about Essex Junto, told everyone that if Burr were elected, he would pull New York from the union. Burr was not elected, and he blamed Hamilton for his failure. Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel, and killed him. He had to flee New England, because at that time, dueling was frowned upon, and Hamilton was quite popular.

So the first effort to secede from the Union was made in New England, not the South.

This will just inflate the pissing contests which we inevitably succumb to anyway during NESes.

You, foul knave, insult my goodly sensibilities. I challenge you to a duel.

Put me on the waiting list! What a wonderful way for inexperianced Nesers to gain some military experiance EQ:)!

At the moment there be no waiting list. First two people to confirm a duel will get priority.

I would be quite happy to take on any scanario provided I'm given a day or so to look up the histories and background information of each nation. For starters I think it would probably be best to go with one of EQ's scenarios since stats and maps are already created and we can get the first duel up and running quickly. Then after we've seen how they work move towards creating other scenarios.

@Justo, I like the way you think.

Well Condor you accepting Circuits hatin'?
