End of Empires - N3S III

From: The Chapru Confederacy

Greetings, men of far waters. Our confederacy extends its warm welcome to the men of the east, although in the past, easterners ravaged our shores. But we do not see the same evils come from your islands, and the slavers of days long pass have ceased. We wonder, what lies beyond these waters, beyond even your coasts? Our people hear rumors of the world beyond, with great wars and terrors beyond imagining.

But we would like first hand accounts. What say you, about the affairs of this world? And will you allow us the luxury of bringing our boats to your ports? We promise no ill will, and we shall respect your lands during our stays, should you permit us to dock.

My name is Giuthup Iuttulosamnos. I am the third child and first son of my family. It has been two years since we left Duhip-on-the-Had. When we lived there, my mother wove and picked grains. Her name is Waliuthi, and she is named for her mother, who is named for her mother, since before the coming of the Prince of Stars. Her name refers to a violet flower which grows up the great river’s banks. I am told that the flower is beautiful, but I have never seen one.

Father fought in the War of Knots. His name is Bolibop. He is named not for any ancestor, but for a tool: the blacksmith’s hammer. Humble, yet mighty, the hammer builds, and can also destroy. Grandfather chose the name- his son was born into war, and he needed a strong name to survive. A name which would break our servitude, and break the power of the Satar.

Father fought for as long as I can remember. Mother tells me that he had fought even before I was born, like his father before him. I never met my grandfather, because he died before I was born. He died at the Battle of Jahip, fighting the Satar. I am glad that my father didn’t die as well, because without him I wouldn’t have been born.

I know that my family fought to be free. Father always tells me that that is the way of Faron: to battle for freedom. I used to find this confusing, because other people told me that fighting is the way of the Satar: by fighting one gains Exatas. Maybe they are both right. I once asked my father if we became Faronun because of our Exatas. He shouted at me and told me that we didn’t. I still wonder if he meant that we didn’t become Faronun, or that we didn’t do it because of Exatas.

I still think that I was right though.

However, I don’t have much Exatas, and I don’t feel very Faronun either. I don’t remember being anyone’s slave, so I never had to fight to not be one. Maybe that is why, here in Caelio, the other children call me Hiuthu, and not Faronun. I still think that is unfair- they didn’t have to fight the Satar either, so why are they any different from me? Sometimes they make fun of my voice, making jabbering sounds, but I think that it is Faronun that sounds silly- it sounds like a drunk person holding their mouth open. That hasn’t stopped me from learning to speak it, but I still think that it sounds silly.

Someday, when I finish learning it… then I will be Faronun.

The world is a terrifying place, and we admire your courage in attempting to explore it. As it stands, many of the peoples of the north fight great wars to determine the rule of the islands here. The Cyvekt and Satar shall doubtless clash in battle soon, and many fear that the distant Emperor of the Savirai may rouse from his slumber as well... Should you wish to explore these lands, you do have safe passage to our ports, but we cannot guarantee your safety beyond.

OOC: Looking forward to see where your story is going, Iggy. :)

Iggy, that is excellent. I love it. This is my favorite part:

So relatable and relevant etc! :)

Should be able to do orders tomorrow.

For the record, I'll possibly have limited internet access from Wednesday through Sunday, so please plan ahead and ask your questions sooner rather than later!

(I'll probably extend the deadline to Sunday for the same reason.)

The Machai flows through me, as it flows through all things. I am the Machai, and it is I.

The mosquitoes bit at his face and his neck, at his torso and his arms and his legs and his feet. They swarmed over his body like locusts descending on a field, covering all. He could have walked as if clothed, swathed in a blanket of biting, itching insects.

They would calm down, once the initial fervor wore off. Mosquitoes had their fill quickly. Even in the Room of Ten Thousand Bites, a human provided far more blood than a swarm could hope to gorge itself on. The monks kept them well-fed.

As the swarm settled down, the itching continued, but Lunto could ignore them. Nine times he had sat in the Room of Ten Thousand Bites before, and only the first had he departed early. There would be eight hours to wait before sundown. He began the chant

“In the Machai, all beings are one, human and mosquito alike. Our souls are bound together. In sitting with our fellow souls, we feel their unity with us, and the universal oneness in its great beauty as it arises.

In the Machai, all beings are one, human and mosquito alike…”

Outside the Room of Ten Thousand Bites, dusk drew tighter around the Unu-Allassai monastery. A secular guard stood watch at the outer gates. Or so he should have done, but there were few dangers that might beset the monasteries of the Allassai. Instead, he stared at the earthen hut into which the monk Lunto had withdrawn hours previously. He had been at the monastery for a decade, yet still he marveled at the ways of the monks. They open themselves to the Machai in the strangest of ways.

So they did.

OOC: Prospective New Player Inquiry

I have heard good things about this NES, and after looking over some updates, the wiki, and the ruleset I have decided that the praise it received was appropriate, and that I would like to join it. To be more specific I would like to join as the Church of Iralliam, the religious stream being one I am apparently very good at if at all possible. I would naturally like to receive an overview of what I would need to know regarding the Church though before I start playing as it (presuming it is open).

Oh and If it is not open, and the position of pontiff in residence is sadly denied me for whatever reason, are there any other suggestions as to nations I could play?

Not going to comment on the Church of Iralliam because I don't know much about it, but I think the three most enticing NPC prospects at the moment are the League of Gallasa, the Vithanama Empire and the Dulama Empire, each of which is quite strong and has the potential to become much stronger, but also have interesting struggles and dilemmas and are deeply involved in the politics of the world (the Vithanama maybe less so as they have no player-controlled immediate neighbors at the moment, other than the Laitra).

Also, the deadline for orders is tomorrow, so you may want to wait until after the update (?).

I think NK is out of town until the end of the weekend, but I'm not sure how the deadline stands while he is away.

Deadline is de facto moved to Sunday, any time. I'm not really in a position where I can give a detailed summary of the Church. You can definitely play it, though. Let me know if there's stuff you'd like to know that's not on the wiki (I'll address it when I return from my vacation). I'd also suggest talking with das a little, as he is easily the most closely linked with the Grandpatriarch.

I'd also recommend tracking down Kal'thzar if possible. Which it may not be.

I do have some notes on the Church; I could try digging them up tomorrow if you want. Or just ask questions.

Speed edit: But honestly, after what I think was centuries of development since the last time someone wrote things for it specifically, there is probably a fair amount of room for you to shape it. Lots of things have been left vague as well.

Just transferring your notes when you have time should suffice. As to your speed edit, I noticed the vagueness you mentioned when I read the wiki, which is part of the reason why I felt it might be interesting to give Irralliam a shot, well that along with the fact that the Church is a more comfortable starting point for a rather late entrant than an established territorial empire in my equation.

~NorthKing: No problem, although at this stage I will wait till the beginning of next turn before I begin playing, be it as the Church of Iralliam or some other nation

OOC: And I am suddenly struck with fear that the syncretic Aitahist-Iralliamite hybrid faith in Helsia is going to be summarily stomped out. :/

OOC: Thankyou for bringing the presence of potential heresy in Helsia to the future Grand Patriarchs attention. Oh and yes, you can expect that changes will occur and that certain laxities will no longer be tolerated by the Grand-Patriarchate and the Sacred Priesthood.
