At the moment, what do you think is the country from which the most impressive movies are coming out of?

I think its a pity that so much of the movie industry's might is focused on Hollywood, because theres so much quality stuff that isn't getting noticed from other countries that have access to smaller advertising budgets.

Its promoting the ridiculous idea that people only want to watch kid's movies, teen comedies, romcoms and blockbusters. Even worse, people are being limited to seeing this tripe, and pretty soon they'll know no better.

Anyway, end of rant. Opinions?

There are actually a lot of good movies coming out of the US that are not Hollywood movies. Take a look at some of the American films that have played at Cannes or the Sundance Film Festival. Just like not all Indian movies are Bollywood musicals. Probably the most non-American movies I watch are from France.

Independent American films almost never get that much attention outside of the US and film critic circles so most people just assume that all American movies are Hollywood movies.

I actually like a lot of French movies, when I can manage to stay awake and actually watch them.

Well, outside of the States, I'm going to have to go with Japan. I love me some old Samurai flicks.

Taking America off the list, it would have to be Russia. Of course, all of my favorite Russia movie are all older then 50 years.

Regrettably I haven't seen much of "world" cinema, hardly enough to judge.

I've seen a few 1980s Canadian films; they're not always the best, but I think there's a conscious recognition of how the American media inescapably influences their culture.

I just quit Netflix due to their evil policies, so I'm temporarily cut off from my favorite Japanese films, but I'm sure there're other services. Akira Kurosawa is my favorite director.

Italy. I love spaghetti westerns, and also those low-budget but charming religious films.

As far as Italian films, I like some of Fellini's films although they are totally bizarre.

Out of curiosity, what is netflix doing that you don't agree with glassfan? Do they edit movies like blockbuster?

This I guess, if I can't choose America and if only for the spaghetti westerns. (Nothing against the latter category, I just have no familiairity with it.) Live is Beautiful was pretty good too.

First would obviously be the USA, but second would be the UK because some British films are pretty good, like Hot Fuzz. I love Hot Fuzz!

British films and American ones are one in the same. Are Alfred Hitchcock movies considered British? What about the Harry Potter series? What about the King's Speech. That won best picture by American audiences. I don't think British films are "foreign."
