[FfH II Art Team Blog]

So, here is the complete Package of Kurio Recon Line,
Mustevals -> Animation

Scout, -> atec jaguar
Hunter, -> sumerian vulture
Ranger, -> atec jaguar
Assassin -> sumerian vulture
Beastmaser -> maceman (you might want to use the animations from the svartalfar beastmaster, as they should have the chain sound removed)

cheers

Wow, the units you make get better and better!:goodjob: I'm curious, has Firaxis asked you to join their art team yet?

The Scouts and Hunter are good and the Assassin is amazing, but I'm ambivalent about the Ranger and don't really care for the Beastmaster.

It seems odd that the units that should be getting closer to nature are getting more and more covered by restrictive clothing (leather armor?). The resitrictive clothing also makes the Beastmaster look like the least muscular Musteval instead of the strongest. It might be good for the ranger or at least beastmaster to have a cape like the human versions of those units do, especially since you already have made a Musteval cape for the assassin. I'd rather you use a slightly larger and recolored (maybe with a green cape and brown facial fur) Musteval Assassin for the beast master than the one you have there.

I still think the higher level units probably ought not have pure white fur on their upper bodies. Real ferrets generally have more brown fur on their limbs, their backs, their tails and right around their eyes. I don't see the need for every Musteval to be an albino.

p.s. Are they going to get a Musteval Shadow too?

Glad to see you are back in business seZ!

I love the Mustevals, especially the assassin.

@Magister:
White fur does not have to mean Albino. Albino means practically no pigmentation, and means light skin and red eyes. Look at the Polar Bear, it got great pigmentation but still white fur. I think the same thing is true for the Mustevals, they probably have black skin beneath the fur like Polar Bears. The white fur is probably an effect of the long Winter, where white fur would have been useful for survival.

Maybe the Musteval Beastmaster could have a feathered Headdress

Lamia ART is done. Has been for quite a while. The issue is the animations... They require a completely new set of animations for the snake-portion to look right. Not sure who was supposed to do those, or where they went....

Edit: Was supposed to be Refar, who hasn't been online in several months. Post with the finished art is here. Tracking that down was useful, as when I checked Refar's past work I found a generic founding scene I can use for the Machinarum/White Hand religions. ;)

OK, can we just accept that Refar won't return and that there's no one currently to take on the lamia animation?

I edited the religious units pack.

Version 2 contains changes as follow :

  1. New face (a more handsome one!) for priest of Leaves
  2. New armor and glow effect for Priest of Empyrean
  3. New model for Priest of Overlords (reskinned from Doomsayer in FF)
  4. New effect for High Priest of Order and of Veil (same model with base FfH but with sparkle and fire effect).
  5. Same paramander and Priest of Kilmorph

Looking at esvath's Sidar arcane units again, I have to say that I like the idea of the Sidar becoming steadily less human the more advanced they become, losing their humanity as the centuries slip by. Anyone else agree?

Well, Sandalphon hadn't been described as having an inhumane appearance, just shady. And he seems to be a high-standing Sidar.

I incorporated Esvath's Archmage, but not the Mage.

BTW, I like what Esvath did to the Overlords cultists. The base he used added some dark elegance to them, which was present in Overlords lore, but not in-game.

I also like the FoL priests' look, slightly elvish, but still suited for human civs.

The RoK units I'll make an unique Dwarven artstyle, though. It'll also result in human paramanders built from scratch being default, but in them upgraded from SoK's being dwarven, which is a nice touch.

I'll use his original Empyrean for the default Empy units and the new Empyrean for the Malakim Empyrean UU's.

2. New armor and glow effect for Priest of Empyrean
The current art for the Vicar and Luridus are a little bland, but I like that they wear robes (although I don't care for the current the colors). I pictured Empyrean as a more introspective/meditative faith, not the sort of militaristic religion that would have its priests wearing armor. Of course I could be completely mistaken about that; after all, the icons for those units both have armor. If they are going to have armor, then I'd prefer it to be similar to the armor worn by the Radiant Guard. (Either a shield and staff or a sword and staff, but no cloak so that Chalid still looks different.)

Before I forget, major congratulations to Kirb for finishing the Druid (Confucious, he says "bye bye"). What's the next project? The Ljosalfar or Khazad Champion?

I already did a Khazad champion and posted it here, about 6 months ago. I'm guessing kael never used it :cry:

Can't say what I'll do next, or if there will be a next in the immediate future. I'm atm learning html/php/mysql and focusing my creative efforts on work. Kind of have to eat, so time spent on free modding has to take a back seat to paid work for now.

However, I always need to learn. Although I've never used it in modding yet, I'm actually pretty talented in animation. I've never created a full skeleton for a unit before, and I have no idea how to. But if someone could find me a tutorial for that, I might just be persuaded to find time, for the sake of self improvement, to give that lamia a shot.

On a completely unrelated note, I had a little chance to put my photosourcing skills to use recently, when someone asked me to texture a model of a certain famous Korean they made:http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m143/WarKirby/?action=view&current=kim_demo2.jpg
I wonder if it'd be useful for a leaderhead or somesuch. I have it in .obj format if anyone wants to rig it and do stuff with it.

I know, It really does look horrible. I'm thinking if I ever get around to it, I'd do them kind of like the high elven warriors in LOTR: Two Towers. With a massive nodachi, light, slender armor, pointed helmet, etc. The ljos paladin model is actually pretty close to that already.

Honestly, I don't think that look is right for the Ljosalfar champions. They need more of a wood-elf/foresty style. The Ljo swordsman model is in the right direction. So maybe just a more "advanced" version of the Ljo swordsman, or switch the Ljo swordsman model to champion and make a more "primitive" version for the swordsman unit.

Currently, I'm just using the default model for swordsmen and the Ljo swordsman model for champions. It works out pretty well, even if the def swordsman could use a more woodsy skin for the elves.

I disagree. One thing you forget, Iron working.
If you want woodsy, foresty elves, you research the recon and archery line. I don't think champions should look like that, rather champions should be "lets see what happens when you put elves in iron armour"

Heavy armour is generally not the elven style, which is why the elves tend to build archers and recon units more. But if you want elves in heavy armour, i think the option should be there, much the same as Ashen Veil Elohim.

A champion is a representation of a heavy infantry unit, usually wearing big armour. I think racial art should represent each race's individual take on that, which for elves would be a more elongated and elegant style of armour, but still unquestionably, heavy armour. Champion art should also represent the tech it takes to get there, which is a variety of metalworking techniques.

Regarding armored elves. It's all a matter of taste, and personally I don't have a problem with it myself. (Although I don't like the one with the mace.)

There was an article in the Dragon magazine twenty-plus years ago that explained how the recently introduced Cavalier class functioned in Wood Elf society even though a mounted knight-type of character was at odds with the irregular warfare favored by the wood elves. It can be used as a justification here if one is needed. Basically, the few wood elves that fight in heavy armor act as combat leaders and rallying points for the irregular forces. They are meant to be visible both to friend and foe, and as such need more protection.

Let me be the first to wish everyone a happy new year! :beer:

Regarding the Lamias. SeZ has already said if he had them he'd do some basic animations, but he doesn't. The obvious question therefore is, who does? C. Roland? Kael? Bueller? Bueller?
