Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I do not have permission to post in the news updates section, yet I am supposed to be doing uploads announcements for the CivIII modding fora. Can any of the mods/admins help? I've written to Plotinus but he hasn't answered.

User text above the avatar has a character limit for a single line of text that goes beyond standard forum size for the page.

Don't mean to single anyone out but that was the thread I noticed it in. Max size I could fit was 'testinggggggggggggggggggg' which causes a jarring effect on each post I would make in a thread. Pretty sure there is an option in the forum settings somewhere to force longer text onto two lines to prevent this.

Yep thanks, got My Account working. : )

Another issue. On my standard zoom settings with Firefox the dropdown at the top of the page doesn't always work. Pictures:

After zooming out twice:

It sucks because the other dropdowns do work, the Civ IV one doesn't because it has so many links and it's the one I'd be using the most. I get the exact same issue in Chrome as well. Besides zooming out is there any way I can force the dropdown to always go down?

Great tip! I reset my Window zoom level to 75% and the drop menu went down instead of up. Now I can get to the CivIV War Academy from any CFC locale. Too bad 75% makes all the other text too small to read. I'm using WinXP w/ Explorer, btw. Would be great if the drop down could be forced to...drop down.

The Civ IV - Strategy & Tactics forum could use a sub-forum dedicated to those instances where a 4000BC.SAV is posted for the purpose of having it played by many people without much, if any, discussion of strategy or tactics that is of any benefit to those not actually playing the .SAV.

It's great to have these threads avail. but they don't serve the same function as, presumably, the forum was originally intended and in the way the forum is intended to provide it.

Giving such threads a dedicated sub-forum would:
1) highlight their importance and status,
2) improve organization of both the S&T forum and the content of the proposed sub-forum,
3) enable the Forum Search function to operate more effectively by excluding S&T forum results from results of the proposed sub-forum content

I'm glad it's not just me! I mostly use the dropdown for War Academy and Civilopedia related links when I'm posting here. If I could make a suggestion it would be to cut down on the amount of links to bring the Civ4 dropdown in line with other dropdowns. I don't think there needs to be Overview, Warlords Info Center, BTS Info Center and Info Center and probably Articles... for example.

plastiqe,

I think that the problem is with your browser not the website's drop down menus. They work fine for me at normal size (no zoom) in both Safari and Firefox.

I believe it's the 1680x1050 resolution I use coupled with the fact I increase the DPI settings to make text large enough to read.

Another request: In Account Settings there is an option to disable images, which turns images into links. I wish there was a setting that put all images in spoilers because it would speed up load times for pages with a lot of images.

I strongly support this request. I really dislike embedded images without spoilers, especially on small displays like smart phones.

It must be the enlarged text from your DPI setting causing the problem, since I also am using 1680x1050 resolution. FWIW, I also enlarge the text but I set the browser to use a minimum 14 point font, rather than changing the DPI setting. It works fine that way.

The 'edit your details' page is accusing me of being a spambot. When did this feature get added? What is this McCarthyism?

its just a simple additional attempt at making sure the user who enters some details that can be found in search engines is a human at least - and yes at the time it was implemented (quite a while ago) it cut down on the spam we got quite a bit - I am surprised though it asks you as I was of the impression it only came up during new user registration.

I got that when I changed my avatar and sig recently.

It's really annoying, when you're not trying to change anything that could compromise security, like passwords or email addresses.

yeah well - answering whether that can be removed would be admin work - so I am at a loss. Essentially once you enter the requested word in the field below the text it should cease to bother you for good though.

Edit: as this is an x-post with Valka D'Ur: this is not aimed at sensitive information but at stuff showing up in web searches (profile information) which was a way advertisers would use the profiles which is hard to catch as its not actually in the open - though indexed through links around here.

So when I change my avatar and sig at the end of the month when NaNoWriMo is over, I won't be hassled with that?

Every user? What if you happen to be a long-time user who for some reason never changes any information in their profile? The forum software isn't sure if that user is human or bot. It seems pointless to use this security feature on people who have already proven they're legitimate members.

New registrations, yes. This is a good thing to do for that. But those who are long-time members are justified in being annoyed.
