@Ailedhoo- I said "To the left of..." That doesn't necessarily imean actually left.
Although I think using "Left" and "Right" to describe social issues is silly. Just to name two examples, the left commonly supports drug legalization but opposes guns, and the right vice versa. But that's not really a left-right thing. Both allowing drugs and guns are (Comparatively) libertarian views.
Rand Paul isn't the practically perfect libertarian his father is, but he supports legalization of marijuanna, an end to the Patriot Act, an end to the TSA, and he thinks states should be allowed to legalize gay marriage. Compare that to "Typical" members of the GOP... he's socially much more libertarian than them.
