GR27 - AWE Archipelago vs 30 civs

I've been delayed by getting my HOF submission ready and the game recap done. It wasn't a great game, but it is over. The writeup is >here< , if you really need something to do.

I have to play a turn in the C3C MTDG 2 tomorrow night after church, but I might be able to squeeze in a few turns. If not then, Thursday looks good.

We puts us -1 gpt, with Istanbul ready to birth a settler this IBT. And a Barracks in Uskudar.

Drop science to 60%, +4 gpt, Literature in 25; Palace in 22. We should be able to make that up.

Aydin is connected. Road completed, we make haste to road to our new city. Move this worker onto Lookout Mountain, to road.

Roading the mountain will take as long as roading the two grass tiles to connect to our new city. It also makes the city 3 road tiles away from Bursa.

Not a lot to talk about. The attacks have been small and disjointed and we've been able to beat them off.

We built two new cities, Antalya and Konya. Neither one are connected yet. On Old Lookout Mountain we have a Worker building a road, which will allow Bursa to be one turn away from Antalya. The other new city, Konya, will be much easier to connect.

Both Antalya and Konya have a Spear and Archer for defense.

Istanbul is building an Archer after two Settlers. I'm not sure about that build, another city would be nice, but I was worried about overextending ourselves.

I've kept an Archer on Old Lookout Mountain to protect the Worker. Once that road is done I was going to send an Archer/Spear pair SE to set up another lookout point on a mountain.

We have a Worker building a shortcut from Izmit to Iznik. It is two tiles away from a Viking rArcher, which has ignored it.

Money is tight, with 6 gold in the bank and +0 being added each turn.

We have two geeks in Bursa, to slow down the Palace prebuild.

Literature in 12, Palace in 13.

Good work. :goodjob:

Istanbul can be adjusted to bring in +4 food and reach size six this IT, which won't affect the completion of its archer build.

Edrine should be micromanaged to use its forest/river tile every third turn, so that it can produce spearmen/archers in three turns.

Our next city should go on the site two tiles directly E of Uskudar, which is on a river and claims two game before expansion. Also, we shouldn't ignore the location N-NE-NE of Istanbul--a lot of tundra around, but it's a first-ring river site with just enough green in its radius to be productive eventually.

Preturn: Kill off 2 Spanish Archers with our Archers (one becomes Elite). Minor changes.

IBT: More Spanish Archers. A Viking Horseman shows up.

530 BC: Kill a Viking Warrior. 2 Viking Archers next to the city. Kill English Warrior going Elite.

IBT: Viking Warriors retreat to Horseman. More Spanish units (2 Archers next to city and Spear/Archer pair appear)

510 BC: Kill Spanish Archer

IBT: Viking Archers going for less defended Konya, which is hard to defend. Fortunately Horse doesn;t follow.

490 BC: Kill Horseman and cover with Spears. The two Viking Archers might attack Spears, but if the win then they could have taken out the only Spear in Konya instead.

IBT: We get lucky and both the Spear and Archer hold off attacking Viking Archers.

470 BC: Road to connect Konya started. Kill off Spanish Spear and Archer.

IBT: Spanish Archer doesn't try to attack. Vikings continue to target the hard to defend Konya - Another Horseman shows up. 2 Spear with a different target than Konya appear.

450 BC: Kill spanish Archer.

IBT: English Archers Spotted and more Viking Horsemen.

430 BC: Konya is now well defended. Of course the defenders are stuck there until roads are up.

IBT: Kill 2 Horsemen on defense in Konya - One Spearman becomes Elite.

410 BC: Kill English Archer, Kill Spanish Archer.
Build Bideer on the river near the two deer.
Get lucky and kill all 3 intruding Spears without loss. It does help we have more hp, but with only attack 2 we will take losses soon. Only 1 Viking Horse, 1 English Archer, and 2 Spanish Archer now visible.

IBT: 2 more Horsemen show up.

390 BC: Can't kill without risk this turn. We will defend.

IBT: Vikings switch back to Izmit.

370 BC: Kill off visible English and Spanish Archers.

IBT: 2 Viking Horse die attacking Izmit Spear.

350 BC: We are able to kill off the Viking Attack force.

Notes:
Pretty much perfect RNG with no losses. Only lack of leader spoiled it. Very unusual

We have a settler heading north of the capitol.

Did a lot of MM this turn to keep the Lit as fast as possible and the cities on track. No city riots during my turn which more often than I would like happens to me especially when I am tired.

Palace and Lit are both in 1. You will need to switch to the big picture when you get Lit to switch the Palace to the GLib before the Palace completes (I am assuming the next player knows this, but wanted to mention it because building a Palace would be really bad  ) If we MM Bursa to max shields it can get to 10 (12 with 2 corrupted) which means 10 turns until the Glib past that. We should know by the end of next player turn whether we will get it.

Getting a leader so we can fall back on the Heroic Epic would be very nice despite the Archer Army we would need to build. Given last game, I wouldn't send out an Archer army - rather keep it protected in cities and use to help defend. They are too fragile to send out unless there is also a Spear Army with them.

I think we should continue science until we know for sure. I see Ironworking, Wheel, or Math being the best options. I think I would pick Ironworking for the ability to make useful armies and to see where the Iron is located.

Not much has happened, but here is a picture anyway:
GR27_350BC.jpg

Nice progress. :goodjob:

I've got it.

I would go for IW first as we need to locate the iron even if we fail to get the Glib

I would go for IW first as we need to locate the iron even if we fail to get the Glib

I'm surprised you have managed to keep going so long without IW, previous AW attempts have folded due to the lack if Iron. Good luck with the GL :D

350 (0): Literature --> Iron Working, pre-build switched to Great Library.

I like "Bideer"--pronounced bih-deer, it sounds convincingly Middle Eastern.

330 (1): We push two spearmen forward to act as lookouts on mountains, in the west (Izmit) and south (Antalya).

310 (2): We fill an English spearman outside Izmit fuller of arrows than St. Sebastian (1-0).

We shoot down three Spanish archers approaching Antalya (4-0).

290 (3): We unhorse two Viking horsemen near Konya (6-0).

We found Kafa on the tundra river NE of Istanbul.

270 (4): Disposing of an English spearman outside Izmit costs us an archer (7-1).

Konya worker --> barracks, Antalya worker --> barracks.

250 (5): We account for a Spanish spearman outside Aydin (8-1).

We fail in one attack on an English archer next to Konya before succeeding in the next (9-2).

Istanbul settler --> archer.

The Indians, whom we don't know, complete the Statue of Zeus.

230 (6): Our southern lookout spearman spots a Spanish border. The city in question is probably seven tiles SSW of Antalya.

We strike down three assorted enemy units on the Izmit-Konya front, but lose another archer (12-3).

We skewer two Spanish archers adjacent to Antalya (14-3).

The Vikings ask for peace talks. I take the opportunity to establish that they have fourteen cities now.

Aydin barracks --> archer, Bideer walls --> worker.

210 (7): There are still some enemy units around, but they aren't stacked, so we have no safe attacks.

190 (8): There are ten enemy units along our whole western flank from Izmit to Antalya, but they're moving laterally rather than committing themselves. This could become tricky.

170 (9): Our enemies move next to our cities all along the line. Now we just need good RNG luck...which we don't really get, but we manage to extirpate eight enemy units for the loss of two archers (22-5).

The Spanish request peace talks. They have thirteen cities now (and the English twelve, incidentally).

We complete the Great Library in Bursa. As far as we know, no other civ was even building it.

150 (10): We just prevail over a Spanish spearman next to Aydin (23-5).

We pick off a redlined Viking horseman outside Iznik (24-5).

We found Ankara on the southeastern river between Antalya and Bideer.

I'll depart from convention and play through the interturn, so that we'll know what we get from the GLib and can plan properly.

Bideer worker --> barracks, Kafa walls --> barracks.

We get just seven techs from the GLib, leaving seven AA techs (two optional) we still don't have.

We don't have iron or horses within our borders. We can't see horses at all. We can see iron two tiles beyond our lines in the west, and three tiles beyond our lines in the south.

Eight elite victories this round didn't produce a Great Leader.

Both the iron sources we can try to hook up are in exposed positions, but the southern source is right on the Spanish axis of advance, while the western is a little above the route the Vikings have been taking, so the latter is probably a better bet. We could establish a colony on the iron first in the hope that the AI will ignore it, as sometimes happens, while keeping the settler Istanbul is about to produce nearby in Izmit to found a city on the iron if that idea doesn't work out.

We can start moving the two workers next to Konya into position to start building the iron road this turn.

Apparently the three civs we know aren't achieving much in research. I don't think we should start researching our own way to Monarchy yet, but if we don't get anything from the GLib in the next round, we should consider it.

Istanbul can be run on a six-turn spearman-plus-settler cycle, with appropriate MM.

Uskudar should work a forest tile one turn in three (as it's doing at the moment) so as to produce a unit every three turns.

The western iron...

GR27-130BCi.jpg

...and the southern:

GR27-130BCii.jpg

I'd say go for a colony first. With swords, we will be so much stronger. I would try to do this as soon as possible.

By the way, great work :goodjob:

I got it, but I do not know whether I will manage to play before the weekend.

markh, do you want to swap with me?

If you have the time to play feel free to take it before me. The earliest I will be able to play will be Thursday or Friday.

ok, I am starting now and will surely finish tonorrow

Guys, I will post my turns tonight, but I got big news. You can guess which of the news below are correct (copied from Greebley's Aggie Monster Map quest)

1. We connected the iron
2. We have been catapulted into the Middle Ages
3. We met 2 new foes
4. We have one sword army
5. We have not one but two sword armies
