It is not related to the UK's colonization.

It is not a map of tin deposits or rare earths.

It is not a map of opium, but the growing of opium is somewhat related to the map.
 
I was thinking degraded farmland or social instability, but thought there was too much white for either.
 
Maybe some type of weapon, but it wouldn't be related to opium (unless it can be used in a blockade) :)
Then again it couldn't be naval, since some landlocked countries have it.

Maybe it is related to lakes, even Afganistan has some of those.
