Guess the map 16: No need for that latitude!

:bump:

C'mon, guys... don't tell me I stumped you!

What do these countries have in common?

I looked at the map several times now, and your answers, not much to go on there, it's something that is indirectly connected to Sci-Fi ? Belgium is not part of it..

Can we get another hint :)

To clarify the writing-themed guesses: There has been a lot that's been written and published about this, both fiction and non-fiction, so genres don't matter. I'm not looking for book titles or authors or publishers, or even books at all, really. What I am looking for is what do these countries have in common?

In no particular order, the countries are:

South Africa
India
China
South Korea
Japan
Uruguay
Chile
Argentina
Brazil
Poland
Russia
Italy
France
Czech Republic
Germany
United Kingdom
Norway
Ukraine
New Zealand
Australia
United States

The way I approach these map guessing games is to figure out what they have in common. Some of you use percentages and scales and get all frustratingly mathematical. This isn't mathematical. It's a 'yes' or 'no' thing. The red countries have something in common that the others don't.

Books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been published about whatever it is that this specific set of countries has in common. Technology is related. Space is partially related (as per previous guesses).

I don't see Nigeria or the Philippines, so it's probably not population-related, and nothing to do with empires, because Spain's not there.

Is it related to elections in some fashion?

Is it countries that have achieved some milestone of space exploration?

Countries with companies that are a major component of the space industry?

(I have no clue based on what's been written, but I know Rocket Lab was founded in NZ... though if the above was true, I'm surprised there are no Canadian space companies.)

There is a relation to government, but not elections (or at least I'd be super-surprised if this was ever an election issue).

Is it countries that have achieved some milestone of space exploration?

Some of the countries have undoubtedly achieved milestones of space exploration, but not all. Space exploration is involved, though.

As my previous answer indicates, space is involved with some, but not all.

Are these the only countries with this in common? That is does this "trait" not exist in any other countries?

Does it have to do with the existence or lack thereof of some sort of government scientific agency?

The existence of some sort of government scientific agency, yes. You're getting on the right track here. :yup: But you still have a way to go.

 If there were more countries than just these, they'd be included on the map.

Honestly, I put in research time before posting this map. It would be embarrassing to be mistaken.

It cannot be countries with a space agency can it?

No. There is some involvement with space agencies, but not all of these countries have a space agency. As well, there are countries that do have a space agency that aren't represented on this map.

List of countries with antarctic agencies? Or antarctic bases?

Not sure what the connection is to space, however. But I found out the Czechs have a base down in the freezer, and I know many of the countries on the map also have bases and agencies for Antarctica.

You're soooooo close! :) There's just one more detail needed.

Countries with bases on Antarctica proper?

Given that Spain has an antarctic programme and bases but their bases are on islands off Antarctica.

Spain isn't one of the countries that fits the requirement of what I'm looking for.

Countries with Antarctic bases, yes. But there's one more detail that's needed. It's not about the islands. Remember that only the countries in red are part of what I'm looking for. There's one detail they all have in common, regarding Antarctic bases.

Countries with permanent antarctic bases as opposed to seasonal bases?

Countries with permanent antarctic bases as opposed to seasonal bases?

YES! :dance::dance::dance:

You have solved it! :yup:

There would be a lot more countries represented if I'd included the ones that only have seasonal bases.

Space is relevant to this because of some of the research going on. Antarctica is the closest place Earth has to conditions on Mars - remote and cold. Manned missions to Mars will have to consider the problem of crews that are isolated for long periods of time in an inhospitable environment. Antarctica is one of the places where people can be tested to see how they fare both physically and psychologically, and how well they come together as a team.

Of course there are lots more research programs going on with some of the countries. Climate change is another major one.
