New Hampshire politics was the focus of a This American Life episode recently. Apparently the partisan divide there has gotten much less civil recently. Also Democrats seem to be on the upswing.

New England conservatives have a lot less use for the culture war extremist version of conservatism than places like the Bible Belt and Western states have. So the Republicans have been alienating that brand of conservative which exists in the Northeast and West Coast.
