How do you end 'cancel culture'?

those preaching unpopular messages

like the Dixie Chicks
They made unpopular statements (for being country musicians) and people stopped buying their records because of it.

In what way would you say their freedom of speech was inhibited? I think of the record-buyers, or now non-buyers, as exercising their rights to not endorse the Dixie Chicks' statements by not giving them their money.

Unless I'm reading your post wrong?

And I'd bet money most of those same people criticize Hollywood's blacklisting of conservatives. Boycotting people inhibits free speech, buying a record doesn't endorse the musician's politics. I've never considered basing a purchase on anything but the music, I didn't throw away my Cat Stevens records when he turned Muslim.

And they’re free to say that too. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean it needs to be within the boundaries of consistency.

Why should the Dixie Chicks, or Aaron Sorkin, or Clint Eastwood have a platform for their views as members of the entertainment industry, but I’m prohibiting the free exercise of that speech if I choose on an individual level not to patronize them? They got up on that platform, and I don’t need to keep them there.

In general I don’t really boycott someone for their politics. Alec Baldwin is personally, in my opinion, a goof. But goof or not, I’ll still watch Beetlejuice.

There was an actual blacklist of Communists and liberals in Hollywood back in the 50s.
The so called blacklist of conservatives in Hollywood today doesn't stop many openly conservative actors having successful careers.

my mom slapped me when I called her a *****, I todl her this was inhibiting my free speech but she just slapped me a second time :(

Well, listening to musicians and actors regarding politics is pretty short bus to begin with, so I'm not sure I'd expect a lot from any situation arising from there.

Well technically you were right, but she was also right to slap you. Don't disrespect your mama. :p

So you're saying it's not ok for someone to use their own right to free speech in response to someone else's free speech that they disagree with?

Why dont you boycott Baldwin? Aren't you 'endorsing' his speech if you dont? I'm sure there are people who do boycott him based on disliking his politics, but they are being hypocritical if they criticize boycotts of their approved speakers. You're not prohibiting free speech and people wouldn't know about your personal choice, boycotts are different. They're public attempts to change behavior, to inhibit free speech, to silence dissent.

Were the 50s a good time for free speech? Those openly conservative actors got popular first, proven money makers have more freedom to speak.

there's no way anyone could possibly believe this tho

What is the purpose of a boycott?

my mom slapped me when I called her a *****, I todl her this was inhibiting my free speech but she just slapped me a second time :(

Did it work?

So you're saying it's not ok for someone to use their own right to free speech in response to someone else's free speech that they disagree with?

Boycotts (and cancel culture) are actions to coerce compliance. Whether or not they're okay is another matter, but they are designed to inhibit free speech. As for the moral component, does ridding society of speech I find offensive justify destroying free speech in the process? No.

So what are you actually claiming?
Is liberal America doing anything like the McCarthy era or are you just talking nonsense as usual?

Why dont you boycott Baldwin? Aren't you 'endorsing' his speech if you dont?
I like some of his movies; only if I think I am. I don’t, so I’m not.

I'm sure there are people who do boycott him based on disliking his politics, but they are being hypocritical if they criticize boycotts of their approved speakers.
Are they? Or are they just in effect saying they want more speech favorable to them and less speech they find disagreeable?

Even if it is hypocrisy, that is not the worst sin committed by man. We teach our children not to lie and then ask them what they want from Santa Claus for Christmas. Whoops!

You're not prohibiting free speech and people wouldn't know about your personal choice, boycotts are different. They're public attempts to change behavior, to inhibit free speech, to silence dissent.
People would know about my choice if I decided to tell people about my choice.

The free exercise of speech includes persuading others to not listen (or as you would say, inhibit) to some speech. I say: good! Some speech should be inhibited. Some speakers should be harangued, within the limits of the law and not afflicting harm on them.

Shhhh. They don't want to hear that!

So you're saying it's not ok for someone to use their own right to free speech in response to someone else's free speech that they disagree with?

The Principled Libertarian Position® is that the government should force people to buy the albums of any band that the government deems is subject to a boycott restricting their free speech

What is the purpose of a boycott?

There is no "purpose of a boycott", boycotts have been used for many purposes throughout history.

They're public attempts to change behavior, to inhibit free speech, to silence dissent.

Yes, who could forget such blood-stained tyrannies as the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-6 or the widespread boycotts against British goods in the colonies after the passage of the Coercive Acts in 1774.
