How is your EU3 Game going?

So playing as the Manchu, Muscowy wiped me out so I tried to play Byzantium next. I knew I would have a lot of trouble at the beginning trying to get territory without triggering cascading alliances so I focused on colonizing the new world. As soon as I could, I got Quest for the New World to train Explorers to chart a path through the ocean, attempting to find a New World civilization I can just steal the land from. The Creek Indians were the first tribe I encountered so I sent an army of Tech 5 soldiers to wipe them out. Eventually it occurred to me I could just seize the territory with the seize colony button without suffering too badly infamy so I did this with the Shawnee. I converted what I could to kind of placate everyone and finally get some income going, all the while I placated the Ottomans and other surrounding empires. However it was at this point where Milan and it's cascading Alliances started the offensive for some reason on my home turf. I wasn't ready to move the capital away yet so I capitulated and released some territory to Milan and freeing that other Greek island at the bottom. This actually was a mixed blessing as the land that I gave to Milan isolated my capitol in Constantinople so I took the opportunity to relocate the capitol to AYLERBAYMER(Alabama). This got rid of the distant overseas penalty for all the provinces I colonized in North America and that was where I started rolling in the money! Sent my merchants to lucrative markets and tried to be nice with the owners of those markets. Now not only do I have one of the most powerful armies in the world, my inflation is nothing while my neighbors are well over 100, I'm cordoning off the rest of North America from anyone that might want to try to get a piece of the new land and I am fully westernized and modernized! I'm now more powerful than Spain or Great Britain in terms of manpower and I'm starting to expand my navy as it seems ships don't seem to cost as much as footman or cavalry.

You know, that tooltip up top means you can upgrade either your infantry or your cavalry. You should probably do that, since the cost is zero (except for having to regain morale).

I know, but the option (some sort of Cavalry), while it has more defensive points, it has less offensive ones. It's been available from the game's start, and I can build it in some of my conquered provinces, at least barring loss of cores by the conqueree, if I need it (which I generally don't). Sticking with what I have, especially in a game with quite a bit more offensive war, seems best.

EDIt: ^ Byzantium. In America ;)

Actually, it looks kind of... right.

I can understand not wanting to trigger cascading alliances, leonel, but you don't even have all of the Greek-culture territories, let alone your starting cores. WTH man

I'm bidding my time... :shifty: The idea is that I build up large forces in Greece before making a blitzkrieg but not yet. I couldn't do it before because I only had a tiny amount of territory but now that I have the riches of America on hand, It's a possibility. Ideally I'd prefer to have over 100k soldiers there but I'm allied with Milan right now so occasionally they'll open an opportunity to reconquer territory.

Plus I have plenty of time! It's only 1640 something!

 how can you fail as Byz and go to America?! seriously!
you could also just go and start at 1405 and go kill the ottos!

Geez, guys, give him a break. It's nice to see a Byzantine empire that's a little out of the ordinary and different. Not everyone wants to recreate the Roman Empire.

Even though I always try to. :p

Shut up you guys! Byzantium will RIIIIISE AGAIN!

I know I've only had this for a couple of days, but I don't think that I've ever played a game that seemed to so very deeply resent my attempts to play it. I must be doing something wrong. :crazyeye:

Nope, that's completely normal.

I'd recommend you read some AARs at the paradox forums, that help immensely both in showing you the proper way to do things, and also in giving you some ideas of things to try out in your own games.

Also post some screenies and we might be able to give you some pointers. It seems counterintuitive to most games, but this really is how you get better at paradox games. Try, fail, discuss, reload.

Like I said earlier, this is actually a really terrible way to do things. I recommend that the "discuss" part come first, or that the relevant person read a relevant gameplay AAR. Trying and failing sucks and is not fun. Paradox games are, at least in theory, fun.
