I suspect that the Venetians lost their Navy in a war with Castille or England, and were left vulnerable to any two-bit nation with a Cog or two.

Brunei isn't so weak either. They've got high pop and rich high manpower provinces.

For a second the way you worded that made me think that this was the Vicky 2 thread.
Back on topic: I believe that what happened was that Venice was caught in a war with Austria and friends at the time, and then Brunei for whatever reason DOW'd Venice for some reason. Venice had been in decline for some years at this point, having lost most of their Balkan possessions to me (I was Byzantium) as well as revolters and Hungary. Since most of Venice's military in the region was gone, Brunei was easily able to occupy Corfu. Venice, apparently not wanting to fight a pointless war, just let Corfu go.
It lasted only about 10 or 15 years though. Somebody (I forget who, it might have been Burgundy) decided to ruin all the fun and take Corfu for themselves.
It was from an old Death and Taxes game from an earlier version that I got bored of around 1620ish and eventually got deleted when I updated to a more recent D&T version so I don't have the savefile anymore either.

November, 1435. The Timurid leader Khalil Sultain Timurid lives on, as do the Timurid conquests. Most of northeast India has been taken, and both Vijaynagar and Taungu were forced to pay tribute. All but one Ottoman province were taken, and the Bosphorus Sound Toll was established. Epirus will be taken soon, and the war with Venice is going well. The only question is, will they yield to war weariness and repeated defeats of their army and agree to pay tribute, or will this become an every-five-years tradition?
The Horde, meanwhile, has annexed Serbia and Albania, and has just forced Lithuania to pay an exorbitant tribute. With this, and the upcoming Timurid conquest of Epirus, they be exacting tribute from every single one of their neighbors, and most in hefty amounts. Europe may be safe... but The Horde will be safe as well. Especially as they recently survived their succession crisis and have a young ruler, their future appears bright.

That would be easy and I am to lazy
From my current Oman game.
Concentrated on being a trading nation. Slider moves were to full Free Trade, and towards Centralization, but not past the limit. Next moves were towards Narrowmind to get the Missionary producing decisions, and then back towards full Innovative, and then Free Subjects. National ideas were as shown above. The idea was to grow as a trading nation, then conquer Mutapa, and then Swahili, for the gold, ivory, slaves, and to prevent a European foothold. I only went to war and took other provinces if I had a claim/core on them, or as war spoils if dow'd.
Actually, I'm doing a bit better than what's shown above. I'm now at about 1615. I took Deus Vult as my next NI, and swallowed Yemen, and Adal, and had some provinces defect to me from Catholic Mameluk (I don't know how/when that happened, either
). Castille then declared war, and I just kept sinking their navy, while occupying their provinces in the Sinai, and in the Cape. The end result is that Castille is now expunged from the Middle East/South Africa, and my African provinces are no longer distant overseas, so the ducuts/research have gone through the roof.
What to do now? I plan on taking the rest of the Arabian penninsula, the Mameluks, and colonizing the rest of East Africa. I'm number one in tech, so how do I westernize? Will I even need to? Should I stay in Administrative Republic for the remainder of the game, or is there a better government I should plan on switching to, eventually? This is only my second full game of EU, so any help/advice would be welcome.
Oh, and check out Austria exploding through Anatolia, and towards the East.

In my hands-off-except-trading game, Transylvania just became the greater partner in a personal union with Great Britain. I don't know how that came about, but I'm rooting for Transylvania giving Britain tons of gifts to continue the union, eventually inheriting Great Britain, and becoming the most powerful nation on earth. They could use it, they're surrounded on most sides by Austria, who is the most powerful nation on earth. Though I suppose the PU arrangement might work better since Britain is westernized and they aren't.
That game also might need a change of pace since it's 1657, and Crete just declared war on me (Naxos). First war of the game, hopefully I can not lose. If I do, maybe I'll just take up the reigns of Transylvania.
bestbrian, you don't westernize if you're the best in tech. There is the hazard that non-western military units aren't as good even at the same tech level, but the only way to get around that is to become less advanced and then westernize. Which would probably require killing off all the trade for fifty or a hundred years, may well not be worth it, and might not work even then if your domestic economy is good enough. By my reckoning, Constitutional Republic is a better government, too, but it comes pretty late. I'm only on my 3rd game though, so defer to others for better advice.

My D&T Burgundy game:
Im currently the Emperor and have enacted all the decisions up to Ewiger Landfriede (The one which declares peace throughout the Empire), and have a ton of vassals scattered around the Empire, as well as a few outside it. My lands in England, Ireland and Brittany have been gradually taken, with my most recent acquisition in the area being London, having taken it from Wales - England has been dead for a long time. About 15 years before, I single-handedly dismantled France, and now the successor states have been eating at French territory as well, with France currently not existing any more. ( ) I inherited Sweden soon after I dismantled France, which is why I control most of Scandinavia. The HRE is still this fractured largely due to my efforts - If it wasn't for me, Austria, Venice, Brandenburg and Bohemia would be a lot stronger.
Also, my king is superman.
