How is your EU3 Game going?

Or don't move at all and do like if you played Portugal : Punch France in the face with a massive navy when needed.

Moving capitals to America is gamey and so boring :o

What I'd like to do is take over Ireland quietly while nobody's watching and use that as a base to - eventually - take on England. It'd be nice if I could get 3PM Scotland as well, but they're allied with Aragon.

Would it be worth trying to take some land off Denmark or an Italian minor?

No.

Just try to be opportunistic and take land from France when possible, i've seen the AI do it.
France and/or the British Islands are your best options if you wish to expand...

Thats what I did. Struck anytime it looked like France was in a weakened position and took land or released vassals/countries from them. Eventually took them down. Of course, I then had an issue of super-Burgundy...

Started a game as Englad on Easy to try and get the hang of things. I conquered Ireland and revolts are springing up from time to time, but nothing I can't handle. My economy is in the tank though, and my merchants can't seem to compete in Lubeck. Ah well, all part of the learning :). My plan now is to turtle a bit until my stability is up and my economy is running nicely before taking Scotland.

Infamy kills your merchant compete chance, which is probably why you are having trouble. Bleed that off, use the adviser type that reduces infamy if you have to, and you'll be good to go in a couple years.

Your merchants can't compete because of (1) high Infamy (2) low Stability (3) mercantilism instead of free trade.

You would have been better off waiting until you got the mission to conquer Ireland... it halves the Infamy penalty and rewards you with free cores on all of Ireland.

One of the things I don't like about the Paradox game series is that they don't tell you what the missions could be up front, you have to learn stuff like this after you play. While some players will play the same country a few times, I generally only play each one once per expansion pack. Rarely twice.

Basically means I look in the game files to see what possible missions I could get, in addition to all the typical ones.

Don't forget you have to manually select your casus belli when you declare war on someone or else your infamy and stability will take a huge hit otherwise.

I suspect that may have been my mistake. I restarted, made sure the quest was active and conquered Ireland with no difficulties and now my economy is doing well :).

Just pay attention to infamy, try to keep it as low as possible. Also this is worth a lot: EU3 Wiki

How can this happen:

It's really annoying not being able to declare war on someone because of a truce and then if you declare on someone else and the first guy declares war on you without any stability hits it forces you to not only deal with them but also to wait 5 more years after signing peace again because it's just not worth it killing them off because it's the wrong casus belli and one just can't eat infamy carelessly.

Yes, I could play declaring war on whoever I wanted without any concern for my stability or infamy and just cheat to get those. But using the console makes any game as rewarding as eating your own snot.

The game is still rewarding if you use just infamy cheats, and no other ones - I don't like to be kept standing around waiting to go to war again!

War Exhaustion, your economy, army sizes and technologies etc. also need to be factored in when DoWing.

Well, I'm surely very tempted in at leasing using the console to reduce infamy as the game is just painfully unplayable when over the top and taking things slowly and sitting around doing nothing but building, spreading a religion and clicking always the same options in those annoying founding father or corrupt viceroy events while the infamy goes down between wars is also not entertaining what so ever.

Using infamy cheats is ridiculous.
It is easy to reduce it and the AI is just plain dumb... (and i play on Very Hard, -10 infamy limit for ya)

Today I witnessed Finland form Scandinavia and Ireland beat England to death. I think I'm going to lie down now...
