How often and in what circumstances do you "like" on this forum?

I was gone for about 10/11 years and have only just returned and the "like" feature wasn't around back then. I haven't liked anything here yet but when I do, it'll be because I found something really helpful, funny, or something I really agree with. Another forum I post on has different "like" options so the poster will know why it's been liked. So when I like something, I will stick to that system and just pretend there's other types of like options available. :D

I've considered advocating for a similar system like what they have on the Paradox forums but I promptly dismiss such an effort when I remember that there was pretty serious resistance to introducing just the Like feature. I'm not sure how CFCers would respond to there being more choices available.

Moderator Action: Just a note of explanation. Liking a post consisting entirely of moderator text (like this post is), is in fact PDMA and will be treated as such. You are free to like any other post that we make that is a normal post (like we are normal forum members), just not the ones that are totally moderator text. Thank you. --LM

Here Manfred, get it out of your system. Like this one instead. :)

So liking a moderator post that shuts down a topic that has gone off the rails and really needed to be shut down is PDMA? :shifty:

I don't think you could like a post that closes a thread in any case.

Though I may be wrong.

edit: I am wrong.

If the only post content is mod text, then almost by definition, liking said post would be 'discussing' that mod text. We haven't acted on it previously, because it's not absolutely obvious that this is the case, hence the mod text above.

It wouldn't really be fair to act on it in future then, given that it's only been specified in one post on page 3 of one thread.

An above post has established a new rule that liking a post is now discussion. Really? I can understand that liking a Bold Red post reprimanding someone might be inappropriate, but staff should encourage posters to support blue or green informational posts with likes. Doing so lets moderators know that their work is appreciated and noticed and it lets other members know that the moderator has support. It would also allow for recognition of non punitive action by staff. This is another case of too many rules for the sake of having lots of rules rather than letting good judgement take the lead. Was the ruling about this just made in staff after it came up in this thread, or was it already in place? I suspect the former. In any case, you (staff) need to go back and rethink it. When a moderator posts Let's get back to the topic please. folks should be able to like that post.

The PDMA rules are too vague, and this is the first time I've heard this about mod text. Technically I could post, "Padma (one of the admins) did not ever participate in the Iron Pen writing competitions in A&E" and it would be PDMA - public discussion of what a moderator did/did not say/do. There's a thread about it in Site Feedback - definitely worth a read.

@Lemon Merchant: Is this a new policy? I don't remember any of the admins mentioning it when the forum migrated to XenForo. A clear explanation of the "Like" system and what is and isn't allowed would be a really beneficial thing - in Site Feedback, where everyone will see it and can ask questions. Personally, my view is that if someone "likes" a troll post, the one who "likes" it should also be infracted for trolling.

It's been under consideration ever since we switched to Xenforo, but yes, having a clear explanation of the Like policy in general would be a good idea.

That's probably best as a dedicated thread in Site Feedback. It'd also come across less reactionary/PDMA-esque over there. :P
