How smart are you relative to other CFCers?

If you took 10 people at random from this thread and asked them, at least 4 of them would say they were the smartest of the 10. Then they'd argue amongst themselves for several days back and forth, while the other 6 got some fresh air and enjoyed the olympics. Who's really the smartest?

Have you been to the tennis event yet? How was it?

I totally geddit. A home Olympics is just brilliant. The city and it's inhabititants literally glow for those 2 weeks. And if you get to go to an event and watch the home side grind some poor bugger from Laos into the dirt, all the better.

My own hometown is hosting the Olympic sailing events.

Actually about 90% are or were heavy off topic posters up through my position as like 104.

How smart do you think you are relative to CFCers? Pretty basic question and I've set up a poll to figure it out. I encourage everyone to rate where they think they stand.

Follow up question for discussion: Do you think there is a significant difference between the mean level of intelligence in the general population and the median level? What about in CFC?

The mean level of intelligence in the general population is lower than here. There's a selection bias that almost everyone here came here from playing Civilization. I'd wager strategy games are more popular among smarter / better educated individuals. Not solely by smarter people, but there'd be a bias.

As to my place in CFC, I voted average.

I gave up and finally defined intelligence as this:

A socially defined condition pertaining awarded to thoughts outside the mainstream that others consider useful or valuable.

So the more out there your ideas are, communicating them in a way deemed valuable, the "smarter" your ideas are.



This makes sense, to a degree. The irony is that people will consider someone else smart simply because they share the same ideas. Maybe that's the chain back to the center that allows people to see the value.

That can be explained with the second criteria of yours, "valuable". People naturally have it easier to see value in ideas they share.
