Don't underestimate the power of a good first impression. If I were in charge of admissions at Harvard I'd much rather admit someone charismatic and enthusiastic with A:s in the subjects that are relevant for the programme he chooses than some asocial person with straight A:s who wants to go to Harvard because that's what his father did or whatever.

Anyways, congratulations.

Congrats, Red, and stay motivated and beware of "Senioritis" in high school.

I went to what is essentially the polar opposite of an Ivy League school :)

I always hear of Lawyers graduated in harvard... do they teach anything else in there as well?

Ah, oh, and congrats on it, hope it gets confirmed and you get the admissional letter when time is due.

Rehgards :).

He's lying. Unless of course, his father bought his way in. First of all, it's nearly impossible to get into Harvard with "mostly As and Bs" as a Senior, let alone before becoming a Senior. Second of all, the dean doesn't give interviews. Interviews are always with alumni at the Ivy league.

Why would he lie though? Why would anyone lie about anything on an anonymous internet forum?

People get caught in lies all the time on internet forums.

The question is why should anyone tell the truth?

yeah, its impossible. Deans dont give interviews. Plus, colleges dont "give acceptance" to kids who arent old enough to apply. He might have gotten a letter that said "good work" or something...but thats not offical acceptance, so he didnt get into Harvard.

There's just no way with "mostly As and Bs" that you get into Harvard. Kids with those grades get rejected from American...and we're no Harvard.

For what its worth, i got a letter from Harvard my junior year, which we still have hanging up in my living room. It basically said "dont forget to apply to Harvard...we've been watching you, we like what we see, and we'll let you apply for free". I was jacked...so i applied to harvard. 1400. mostly As...some Bs...plus, im a minoirty. Yeah. didnt get in. Maybe you just got one of my letters

or you're loaded.

Well, unless he got an astronomical (i.e. perfect) SAT and/or ACT score...

but with a mostly A's and a few B's I don't see how that's possible.

Second, the Dean said "if you keep up the good work..." blah blah blah...you're not in anything until your name is on the dotted line (or your acceptance letter is in the mail). So congrats on the bode of confidence, but I'd have to agree with everyone else here, something seems fishy...

To see whether they are good at lying? To pretend that they have the life that they wish they had?

Hey I saw the sarcasm too ya know....I was just being sarcastic also!

Sounds more like he was saying that it is still possible for you to get in. I wouldn't count on it till your acceptance letter is in their hands.

This is true. The contract might not be binding, and you might still need excellent grades. So don't slough off, make the most of this opportunity.

Do some Americans agree with me that it's ridiculous that even if you have lower grades than the next applicant you can buy yourself into a great university?

It's smells like corruption but in the US it seems the norm.

Congratz for getting in, but if my dad bought me into something like that I wouldn't be too proud.

Well, I want to comment on your first statement. Harvard is a private college and can admit whomever it wants, and it is interrested in making money, but keeping a good reputation, so it has to balance the two. Some kids get in so Harvard makes money, so kids get in so they keep a reputation as being the top ranked school. No corruption there.

As for whether its possible or not, it is not possible. It is possible that the Dean said that the kid could get in if he worked really hard and did something amazing, but I doubt even that. I applied to Yale, having a 3.98 GPA, 1580 SATs, 2 years of high school sports, 2 years of drama, and 4 years of student government and community service involvement, and I did not get in. (Got into Stanford though.) So, unless there is some sort of proof I am very tempted to dismiss this as a lie.

It's not very nice to assume someone is lying when one has no evidence of that.

While I'm inclined to think maybe he misunderstood whoever it was he spoke to at Harvard, I'm certainly not about to accuse the poor fellow of lying without proof. That's a heck of an insult to someone's integrity without anything to back it up.

And hey, maybe through some freak 1 in a gazillion occurance, Harvard did indeed admit a sophomore with just above average grades into the school two years in advance.

I don't assume Red Stranger is lying. But I am assuming that you he is 'counting his chickens before the eggs have hatched'.

When you've got the acceptance letter in your hand, THEN say you got into Harvard. Until then, I shall reserve my congratulations.

I read somewhere that Havard admits people that doesn't have perfect scores occasionally, just so the straight 'A's inside don't kill themselves from the competition. Any truth in that? If so, it may be how some people who doesn't have perfect score can enter.
